The "heavy metal" term comes from here? It's actually more complex than this but for sure this album had a good amount of influence on the genre featuring some of the typical themes: drugs, love and all things hard rock.
The tunes are heavily blues influenced but with a focus on psychedelia and distortion
Born to Be Wild is simply irresistible
With how important this album is for both Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, I'm surprised I ended up not enjoying it. Born to Be Wild is a banger, don't get me wrong - that's the kind of fun bluesy rock you can jam out to. But most of the other songs feel so haphazardly put together, with the keyboard and guitars awkwardly fighting each other for dominance in the mix. Steppenwolf has gone down in History as a 'motorcycle rock' band for three key reasons: (a) they're a bunch of smelly long-hairs, (b) I thought of this one in the shower but now I can't remember it, and (c) they recorded the song "Born To Be Wild." I don't know about this one, Born to be wild is obviously fantastic, But the rest of it I don't really care for
Born To Be Wild, Take What You Need, The Ostrich are my fave tracks on here. Kinda nihilistic and reactionary in the way that a lot of druggy 60s stuff tends to be, but this is better than I assumed!
