What put this L.A. band a notch above the rest are better songs and the hints of vulnerability in singer Maynard James Keenan’s voice.

AllMusic

With its technical brilliance, musical complexities, and aggressive overtones, Undertow not only paved the way for several bands to break through to the mainstream adolescent mall-rage demographic, it also proved that metal could be simultaneously intelligent, emotional, and brutal.

Kerrang!
Like The God Machine and Mind Funk, the children of Perry Farrell have arrived, and Tool are definitely at the front of the pack.

Adam Jones' guitar playing discards traditional solos in favor of texture, the stranger the better, while drummer Danny Carey steers the band through a maze of tempo shifts with dazzling agility.

Sober blows everything out of the water on this album lmao

Tool’s debut LP, and it's pretty damn good. Before going all out on the prog-metal scene, Tool was more of an alternative metal band, still incorporating some aspects of prog. And while I like this sound less for them, it still makes for a good album.

The rate that this band explores themes and creates narratives while also finishing them in a satisfying way is honestly insane to me. Nearly every song is a banger as well which is typical of TOOL, but there are also some all time great songs in here that deserve to be mentioned. It really shows the insane amount of skill they had even in the beginning of their career. The instrumentals are really good, but they will only improve over time. They aren't as dark or feeling inducing as in ... read more

Early days tool. They didn't find there full sound yet but the sound they did was awesome. If you have never listened to tool you could start here.

damn it started off super strong but just got worse as it went on

the first 3 songs are ultimately the highlights of this album

when i was on ”crawl away” i was already feeling very bored of the sound. it was getting repetitive.

by the time i was on ”4°” i was thinking ”just fucking end already”.

the last song is… definitely unique. atleast it switched up the style. summed up; the album is good but way too long and repetitive
