What put this L.A. band a notch above the rest are better songs and the hints of vulnerability in singer Maynard James Keenan’s voice.

With its technical brilliance, musical complexities, and aggressive overtones, Undertow not only paved the way for several bands to break through to the mainstream adolescent mall-rage demographic, it also proved that metal could be simultaneously intelligent, emotional, and brutal.

"Undertow" is a great debut album that showcases Tool's harsh metal sound with great vocal performances from Maynard James Keenan, incredible instrumentation and introspective, thought-provoking lyrics. The only thing bringing this album down is the fact that they can do better than this.

Fav Tracks: Flood, Sober, Disgustipated, Intolerance, Prison Sex, 4°, Bottom
