Metal Injection

Injecting their own Gothic style into pop and arena rock is what this band does so well and the band essentially puts on a clinic of how to do covers with the Phantomime EP. This is not only a must have for any Ghost fan, this a record that can be enjoyed by so many outside of the continuously growing congregation.

Those who are married to the original songs might find GHOST's renditions a bit too jarring, but the band's fans will likely find lots to appreciate in a covers album that sounds like it could really be made up of GHOST originals.

Phantomime isn't essential between-albums listening for Ghost fans in the same way 2013’s If You Have Ghost EP, Popestar or Seven Inches Of Satanic Panic were, but at this point the band hardly need to prove themselves; this well-oiled behemoth long having passed the point where they can do whatever the hell they want.

Ghost’s success is built on theatrical blasphemy, winking provocation and some blockbusting tunes. The masked Swedes’ third covers EP ticks all three boxes, even if the tunes belong to someone else.

On ‘Phantomime’ Ghost do what Ghost do best. And that’s cheezy 80s music but this time it’s covers. Simply 80s guitar covers that feel right at home with the rest of the Ghost catalogue.

Highlights: We Don’t Need Another Hero, Phantom Of The Opera.

Extremely uninspiring and generic. Ghost have never been a top tier band, but at least their older albums were enjoyable, they tried new things and had their unique shtick, a lot darker sound with some complexity in the song structure and the sound. Then came IMPERA, with the most boring pop rock I heard in 2022. And this is somehow even worse. It's hard to believe this is the same band that released Meliora.

What I really like about this EP is how well Ghost can cover a song and make it their own. It is so nice to hear how a song can really be spread across so many different genres and have such different meaning with the music and how it is sung. My favorites were definitely We Don't Need Another Hero just because of how it was changed and the instrumental was just so perfectly fitting to the lyrics. As well as See No Evil and the intricate work with the guitars! Wonderfully Done!

How the fuck do you manage to do a FREAKING PHIL COLLINS SONG even better than the original?

Ok talking seriously, that's honestly the only exception lol

I remember how Jesus He Knows Me ended that year with around 200 streams in my spotify. I really loved tf.

The rest, is ok. But just ok and that's actually a bit disappointing for me considering I really love Jesus He Knows Me so, it's a bit anticlimactic to find the other stuff just "ok".

But I enjoyed it too so I ... read more
