I think I might have enjoyed Coco Hames’ self-titled a bit more than the actual quality warranted, since her vintage-pop-meets-Nashville vibe is definitely up my alley. The album is too flawed to be a serious AOTY contender – it borrows very liberally from the past, and Hames sometimes employs the “if it rhymes, it works” lyric-writing strategy – but she keeps it short and sweet and her vocal tone is pretty compelling and distinctive.
decent if outdated pop songs in the tradition of Dusty Springfield and Jackie DeShannon but way too Nashvilled up to be listenable for very long. an interesting voice that would benefit from stronger lyrics and less production.
