it's so funny how the animated cover for this is just the background getting bigger and smaller. it's not that it's bad, i just thought there'd be more (literally my view of the record)
SR: cursive, a band i'm getting back into thanks to this record, has a lot of history behind their name despite being one of the lesser known big players in the genre of emo and indie rock back in the 2000s. they have certified bangers like "domestica" and "the ugly ... read more
I cant help but get the vibe, especially after listening to all of their albums, including many Good Life albums, that they really were pushing themselves more stylistically than they have in at least a few album cycles. The general sound of this album is different from past releases with a slick production, occasionally reminiscent of Ugly Organ. However, some tracks simply don't land, just feel a little off for some reason.
One of the most INCREDIBLE albums of 2024, such a MASTERPIECE <3

The ugly ass cover put me off from this album for so long, but im surprised to find out upon first listen that they didn't lose the sound over the years--perhaps significantly less aggressive but still good angry songs
This is a weird album. They lyrics as always are odd yet endearing in their own twisted way. Is a vibe honestly.
An explosive return after 5 years away. Cursive's frenetic, imposing instrumentals rarely take a breath during this existential, nihilistic romp through post-pandemic life.
Solid, even if it doesn't reach the heights of their previous works. The production could be better though.
This new record from Cursive, Devourer, is really mature and expressive. These guys are veterans in the indie rock/emo field, and there's no doubt about their passion and ability to make great music here. The lyricism is fully on point, touching topics like aging, anxiety, the state of the world, and more. Sonically, there's a fierceness to this music, a fire and energy that never lets up, and always hits you directly. And there's always a certain wit too, a little bite, that ... read more
Some good songs here. But definitely not my favorite release. Will probably revisit later.
"Keep churning out those hits, Till it's all the same old shit"
Over 20 years ago, Cursive were able to accurately predict where they'd be in the current day. It's quite a shame really, they used to make genre-defining music in their prime and now it's just, well.. the same old shit.
I enjoy this batch of tunes but it must be so hard to live in the shadow of Domestica and THe Ugly Organ
It really sucks that this album is mixed like garbage because in the back of my mind, I can translate all of these songs into the better, fuller, versions of the songs that feel like they are trying to claw their way out. I feel like these songs will be bangers in concert instead of on a demo tape posing as a record.
Mixing is really lackluster.
But this was actually a pretty good album! Didn’t like the first few songs because they felt so generic and bland and uninspired, but as the album goes on it gains a serious tone that feels akin to what you love and expect from cursive.
I think the last Cursive album I heard was Happy Hollow, their 2006 follow-up to their classic The Ugly Organ. But I saw they have a new album and, you know, what the hell? Why not give it a listen? After all, despite my failure to keep up with the band, they've dropped five albums (counting this one) over the last decade and a half. They gotta be doing something right.
My first, gut reaction is that Devourer feels like it could have been released right alongside Happy Hollow. This is ... read more
Cursive delivers some of their weirdest material to date in Devourer. To me, this is their strongest album since 2009’s Mama, I’m Swollen, furthering their ambitious social commentary from the previous two albums. Aside from a couple of tracks, I really enjoy the album from beginning to end. The musicianship is top notch and while the lyrics can be jarring at times, they’re still passionate and relatable.
