Blu & Exile’s debut is an absolute masterclass in both writing and production. Exile lays down the groundwork with beats littered with amazing samples, and Blu slides on all of them effortlessly. Fun and relaxing listen. Feels like one continuous song. Instruments are great, but some of the longer songs overstayed their welcome. The spoken word segments were interesting sometimes, but they felt the smallest bit obnoxious at times.
Definitely a step down from the Blueprint, but this is still an amazing project in both lyricism and production. Jay gives some of his most memorable hooks and verses to date.
Disappointing. The start of this album puts it on pace to be easily Thundercat's best album. After the first half of the album, the remaining songs sound like someone trying to sound like Thundercat, not the man himself. It makes the album feel so much longer than it is. That being said, the first half really is AMAZING and makes up for the lacking second half.
