2025 Album Review Advent Calendar Day 24 Merry Christmas Everyone!

Of course I picked this album as the last one because it mentions Christmas, the album does have way more to it than that though.

I think this album really confirms that the Velvet Underground didn’t just have one musical powerhouse, Lou Reed, but that it was a collective of many musical virtuosos. I’ve even come to prefer John Cale’s Paris 1919 over Transformer because this is a phenomenal album.

2025 Album Review Advent Calendar Day 23

It would not be a britpop discussion without including this “monolithic” album of the britpop era. Oasis manages to deliver a very cohesive and anthemic album with hits for days. The wall of sound hits harder than on their debut album and Liam sings with even more gusto.

I’m glad to see Noel getting more spotlight on this album with “Don’t Look Back In Anger” which I’ve always preferred over ... read more

2025 Album Review Advent Calendar Day 22

This album is an eclectic blast of britpop at its fullest. Blur makes a very fun album filled with plenty of cultural and social commentary on British life. The serious parts are masked by Damon Albarn’s silly and charismatic personality.

I think this album really solidifies Suede’s status of belonging to the “Britpop Big Four”. Brett Anderson is a vocal powerhouse and is accompanied by electrifying guitar work of Bernard Butler. While I think these qualities were present on their debut album, there are notable improvements on this record. It is also impressive to see how this album came together quite well despite the tensions within the band and the fact that Bernard ... read more

2025 Album Review Advent Calendar Day 20

This is one of the most British-sounding albums I’ve ever heard. Jarvis Cocker is a great storyteller, turning ordinary life in Britain into extraordinary and witty songs including some of the best britpop songs of the 90s. Jarvis Cocker balances his singing between sounding sensual while also bringing a bit of dorkiness and deadpan deliveries.

However, Jarvis is backed up with excellent instrumentations including Candida Doyle’s glossy and ... read more
