Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory

The courage of this left turn is still impressive to this day. Cutting out 2ish songs would've led to this being in the 90s.

God-tier beauty. Sufjan and Angelo complement each other in every way.

Lip Critic - Hex Dealer

most underrated record of 2024

Have returned to this 5x since its release bc it is something I should love... but its one of those records that sounds great on paper but is ultimately quite bland.

Dexter and The Moonrocks - Donkey Flats
40

Ehhh bland alt-rock with some country sprinkles

Whitelands - Sunlight Echoes
50

Pleasant, generic, and mostly lifeless.

NR

what the literal fuck - jail for whoever did this

James Blake - James Blake

i like that this record is quickly becoming criminally underrated. i think thats a side-effect of the current era of hyper-pop production that we are in -- it leads current ears to be confused by this cold, stark, plotting record. this thing is still as radical as it was when it was released.

underscores - U

Her best record to date -- a step change improvement on previous releases. A fun and creative pop record. Lacks the catchiness and oomph required to move it into the upper echelon of pop.

Geese - Getting Killed

Not as strong or as varied as 3D Country. Whole album feels a bit too bland. Winter uses his cheesiest affectation throughout the entire album. The whole thing feels like its missing the dynamics and juxtaposition of sound that made the previous record so great. Au Pays du Cocaine, Taxes, and Long Island City Here I Come are by far the standout tracks.

Agriculture - The Spiritual Sound

I kept coming back to this over and over to finish 2025. I love how varied and unafraid it is as it explores what "black metal" can be.

The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die - Dreams of Being Dust

Feel bad, but I actually laughed out loud multiple times throughout this record because it is so corny.

samlrc - Wild Beats To New Year

definitely the worst project i've heard from the artist.

Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique - The Storm

an interesting mix of influences come together on this fabulous post-HC debut. i've come back and listened to this record all summer. really impressed by FPPEHT.

my biggest critique is that the band seems to fall victim to some AOTY/RYM tropes:
1) both long songs would be significantly better if they were significantly -- especially "Nothing's Easier," which has all the ingredients for an absolutely incredible track but feels like it was haphazardly reverse-engineered to ... read more

CMAT - EURO-COUNTRY

passable country-tinged pop.

Racing Mount Pleasant - Racing Mount Pleasant

very heavy handed with the BCNR seasoning, but an absolutely lovely, well-crafted record.

First Day Back - Forward

An uneven but promising debut.

Natalia Lafourcade - Cancionera

Not as strong as De Todas las Flores but another gorgeous album from Lafourcade.

"@healio got cut off by the character count limit... but we didn't even get to the fact that things like marital rape is not criminalized in the majority of middle eastern countries and the "morality police" in multiple middle eastern countries is predominantly geared towards keeping women in line with insanely sexist laws and punishing them for doing things like showing their hair in public."
On healio's review of Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju
"@healio the song, "Arabian Knights," is obviously a play on "Arabian Nights." The Arabian Nights stories were inspired by golden-era Baghdad. So lets just focus on Afghanistan, shall we? Laws oppressive to women there include: 1) a dress code (which includes a forced covering of the face in public) with punishments to the woman and her male relatives if broken; 2) no freedom of movement - they must be accompanied by a male relative (a "mahram") in public spaces; 3) girls are not allowed in secondary school (or any higher levels of education beyond primary school); 3) forced child marriages - ~33% of women are in forced arranged marriages before they are 18; 4) any and all contraceptives are banned; etc. etc. etc."

"this is one of the only songs i've ever heard to take on the topic of the oppression of middle eastern women. hysterical that you find it "racist"... you seem to side with the oppressors lmao. congrats."
