i was seriously surprised by this album. my high ratings for the other 2 of their original trilogy were more out of appreciation for how clearly well made they are than genuine enjoyment, and upon hearing that this one was more raw and riff focused i expected to get much less out of it. idk if it’s because i already knew a few songs on here quite well or if thrash is just growing on me but i ended up enjoying this one so much more. i’m gonna need to relisten to ride the lightning ... read more
not a huge fan of this type of metal but i thought this was great regardless. favourites were battery and orion. ive gotta watch some metallica live stuff soon
i honestly wish i could rate this higher but the vocals really bother me and i can’t really ignore that. i wasn’t feeling it his album at all at the start but it kept getting better as i went. King of the dead was really good, that was the first song here that really felt like it brought me into the world of the album. then the transition into 7/8 in Death of the sun followed by the duelling guitar solos is one of the coolest things i’ve heard in a good while. the solo in ... read more
dont mind it all except for a couple moments that annoyed me here and there, but id be lying if i said i wasnt getting bored throughout this. i think speed metal isnt really my thing, the constant pace gets a bit tiring after a while and none of it really sticks with me (although i might relisten sometime because i think im just not in a very attentive mood). the solos were the highlights
the album cover describes this album very well. i feel like this is what my german maths lecturer would listen to. there were definitely dull moments but this album is so well structured and feels like im being taken on a journey. the last minute or so of the grudge where the drums start going insane kinda blew my mind when i first heard it. i also really liked lateralus, theres this moment around the middle where its like the guitar just starts meandering and all the elements of the music just ... read more
i listen to a lot of black country new road and the extent to which this influenced their first album was kinda shocking to me when i heard this. there were definitely some awesome moments on this but i was kinda bored a lot of the time. don aman is a bit underrated relative to the other songs i found that one quite captivating
this album feels like some kind of grand transformation. like you enter it as a great warrior, and are forced through an eternity of agony before you emerge a god. this is the most raw and pure meshuggah has ever and will ever be. between the occasional quiet eerie interlude this album is pure ruthless mechanical riffs that just seem to keep growing and changing. the climax of the album (minds mirrors, in death is life/death) is arguably the best thing meshuggah has ever written, and like every ... read more
every time i listen to this it gets better. ive never really seriously listened to this type of music before this album so i dont have much to compare with, but this feels like such a journey. theres never a point during a full listen where theres not a song or a moment im looking forward to hearing, which for me is the biggest indicator of a great album. best song is watching tv
this shit is absolutely crazy, no doubt about it, but i wouldnt say its particularily good. I also wouldnt say its thall either. at this point the focus is so heavily on the atmosphere and insane noises (most of which dont even sound all that pleasing to the ears) that the roots are lost. theres nothing really djenty about most of this album. that being said, taking this album for what it is rather than comparing it to vildhjarta or whatever, some of it is actually pretty good. i think its ... read more
this album does everything i like about this genre. so many fast paced songs with the right type of chords and melodies. i prefer these vocals too over a lot of other more rough screamy midwest emo vocalists aswell, kinda makes it feel more real, like hes nervous to be spilling his heart out on these songs. favourites are tears over beers, hours outside in the snow and see ya sucker
this isnt particularily impressive music and i can see the average person finding it annoying but some of these songs make me feel things that no other music can make me feel. the chord progressions and the melodies they use sometimes just hit so perfectly and form this weird blend of excitement and sadness thats hard to put into words. best songs are twin size mattress, lone star and everything i own. worst song is santa monica
i always find myself coming back and listening to this again. im just always in the mood to hear this album
absolutely amazing album with possibly the best ending ive ever heard
