This is Bowies first taste of greatness. The Majority of these songs are absolute bangers, with only one or two duds. The rest is pure pop rock perfection. The songwriting on songs like Life on Mars?, Changes or Andy Warhol is outstanding, other songs like A song for Bob Dylan feel a bit underdeveloped.
This is Bowies first really good album. While this particular brand of hard rock isn't really my thing, there are some songs on here that are just absolutely amazing. My favorites are the opener, the title track (which is my favorite of the early Bowie songs) and the closer "the supermen". It's also a big step up for Bowies songwriting with lyrics focused on themes of paranoia and schizophrenia. But sadly just like all the early Bowie albums this is pretty inconsistent. The whole ... read more
This album is good? Kinda? It has some really good songs, namely space oddity,an occasional dream and memory of a free festival, but for most of its runtime its more boring folk pop. At least this time around it isn't as unbelievably bad as on his debut. The highlights are amazing though and definetely worth checking out.
Who allowed him to do this? It's repulsively, sickeningly sweet. I want to puke. It's everything bad about cheesy 60s folk pop turned up to 11. Then there's the production which is just offensive. Everything is hard panned to either left or right, the strings and horns are way too loud and oh God the bells. There are some sound collage things on here as well, which are just as awful as the rest. The only good thing about this is the closer, which sees Bowie impersonating a grave digger singing ... read more
In my Opinion this is Autechre first real masterpiece. It's spiraling and towering beats pull you into these strange alien landscapes and immerse you deeper and deeper in them. It feels huge and cinematic at times and intensely claustrophobic at others. Stuff like this is what I expected when I started the autechre deep dive and I am exited to hear more like it.
I like how harsh this is at times and the vocal performances are pretty strong, but the production just sucks ass. I know this is noise, but noise can still be punchy and crisp. Idk, it has it's moments I guess.
Most of this album is pretty boring. It's endless drum machine patterns and the sometimes annoying vocal inflections of the lead singer create mostly boring and forgettable tracks. There are some really cool songs on here as well, but besides the opener, Marian and the closer, fun is rare.
This is an odd release for Autechre. Not because the songs are so abstract or weird, quite the opposite. These songs feel suspiciously normal and straightforward. It's a collection of 4 great techno/dance tracks with varying degrees of weirdness. They pull you into their world of intricate and busy percussion and don't let you go until their over. The exception to this is the first half of the third song, but the second half is as amazing as the rest of this ep. Highlights include the overblown ... read more
This EP shows a lot of potential. The ideas and the playing is really good, especially the guitar parts. I just feel like this needs some punchier production with more dynamic range and some more refined song structures. At this point it feels like most of the ideas aren't fully explored. I also feel like the drum parts could be more interesting. Overall it's still enjoyable.
Aaaaaah I love this. They took the experimental techno stuff from incunabula and amber and made a "short" 39 minute EP. The songs are structurally way more interesting. They are these long builds that grow bigger and bigger and paint these beautiful ambient spaces. It's just a pleasure to listen to. I would cut about a minute or two off the whole thing, but that's a really minor complaint.
This is just really fun. All three of these tracks are intricately arranged and all a bit unusual for autechre. I really like the cycling arpeggios on Lost, the weird shrill shrieks on Djarum and the fast paced Flutter. Djarum and Flutter are especially great. They are both really groovy and oddly melodic. Lost feels a bit more stale in comparison.
This is my favorite Autechre release I have listened to so far. It's a collection of songs that are build from very simple rhythms that are then layered and stacked upon each other to create intricate soundscapes of metallic, almost industrial beats. It's filled with surprises and creative ideas, leading to 35 minutes that never get boring. Inbetween there's some glitchiness, some record scratching and some vocal samples. If the last minutes of the closer wouldn't drag on, this would be perfect.
This album is hypnotic. It's repetitions and building ambient spaces are just amazing. There's so much fun intricacy in these beats and odd sounds. I really love it. There are some parts where it drags on for just a bit, but those are very rare.
Autechre - Amber
This one is so much better than incunabula, holy shit. The highlights have the same strange and seemingly infinite spaces, that are just a joy to lose yourself in, but the album is much more consistent. There are barely any moments on here that drag, but to be fair when they do, they drag quite a bit due to the more ambient nature of this album. That ambience is also its biggest strength though. I really like this.
First of: I don't know if this is a compilation or an album. It was marketed and released as an album, so I'm going to treat it as one. Listening to it I'm not really sure which one it is. There's certainly a sound tying all the songs together, but at the same time there isn't really all that much in terms of flow or thematic cohesion on here. What they share is the really lush and detailed production style that gorillaz has become known for. This allows Damon Albarn and his collaborators to ... read more
This a really solid debut. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it's still a very unique early 90s IDM album. There's some clear techno influences on here and as a result of that some of the songs feel a bit repetitive. When the album works, it's soundscapes are really fun to get lost in. When it doesn't work it can be almost boring.
I especially love songs like Eggshell and 444 for their unique production and odd sound combinations. Others, like the intro for example can be a bit of a slog.
This is a loveletter to the world. She describes various natural phenomena and/or myths about the natural world to write lovesongs. The result is an amazingly beautiful and deeply resonant piece. This is complemented with athmospheric harps and for some reason distorted and harsh breakbeats. Unexpectedly this works perfectly. These little shots of stark contrast keep me engaged through very slow moving and openly arranged songs.
My favourites on here are the beautiful and idiosyncratic ... read more
