Owusu keeps his signature synth-punk-hiphop sounds, this time pointed fully outwardly toward the world, and the message this time yelled loud and clear with no frills - which i’m normally not too huge on but works really well here. whatever he does it’s always so very much worth listening to. Amazing yet again. May the worldwide scourge commence.
understated, but maybe slightly too much so at times without being quite sonically interesting enough to justify it
i feel like i should like pavement more
maybe one day i will
for now, a lot of the songs just don’t quite have the charm that their best songs do for me.
Math Rock with no vocals is common, and absolutely understandable, especially on this brutally chaotic, ever-moving, breakneck of an album, though it can often leave me wanting just a liiittle something, which is just a taste thing. And while this does happen on this record, I’m heavily impressed with how much of an impression it left on me despite this. the opening three tracks (not including the intro) were !!ALLEH at their best, zigzagging through every rapid turn one after the other, ... read more
Anna von Hausswolff dropping on halloween is pure cinema.
excuse the pun but she is the king (or i guess queen) von of darkwave… her atmospherics are always so incredible, and as always her vocal performance is magic, maybe even more so than on dead magic itself. In comparison to that record though, this one doesn’t quite reach the same level of grip and captivation but that speaks more to the quality of dead magic than anything else - though there’s a small selection of ... read more
i FINALLY got the chance to see Just Mustard recently and it was just as amazing as i expected it to be.
WE WERE JUST HERE is a flex in yet another muscle in JM’s arsenal, from Wednesday’s dark grit, to Heart Under’s gothic atmospherics and now WWJH’s synthier, dreamier, noise pop sound.
throughout all sounds in their post-punk toolbox, Just Mustard never fail to deliver gorgeous atmospheres and ambiance, and those brilliantly celestial vocals. Magic once again.
Definitely Mouseatouille’s most fully fledged album that feels like one coherent project. ‘DJ Set’ is beautifully intimate, intricate and personal
I genuinely cannot find the words to describe this band but i’ll try regardless.
Seismic, transcendent, inspiring, colossal, poignant, bombastic.
I hate to say ‘I told you so’… but Maruja have released what is sure to be THE defining post-punk album of the decade, if not more. There’s not much i can say that isn’t already said but these guys bring current events and the state of our world into a fifty minute whirlwind of noise, punk, heavy jazz, post-rock, ... read more
such a powerful and emotive post-hardcore project, with the deeply intimate spoken word vocalisations we’ve come to know and love from La Dispute
Dense, poignant, and immense - Ethel Cain’s second full length album is a powerful storytelling album that demands that you feel, demands that you listen. It all seems to lead to the final two tracks, Tempest; a colossal post-rock song, one of the best of the year, and the intensely emotional closer Waco, Texas.
A huge post-hardcore EP, delving into noise rock, art punk, and all sorts of abrasive, apocalyptic sounds crashing together to create this doomsday project.
I thought since I’m going to see Gurriers again in two days time (I saw them in Nov 2024 too), I should write this review that i should have made a long while ago. I was going to go on this whole schtick about how they’re one of the very best emerging bands in a bustling post-punk scene not only in Ireland but also over the sea in Britain. But that’s just it really. Gurriers don’t necessarily reinvent the wheel but they’re so raw and cutthroat, they stand out from ... read more
