This is definitely Cage the Elephant at their best. There’s a lot of risk taken on some tracks, especially “Teeth” which feels almost like a Pixies song, it’s abrasive as hell and adds a hypnotizing spoken outro into one of their biggest hits. I really don’t know what it is about this album because I know I’m not supposed to like it this much but there’s something about the impressive vocals, the huge toms and the massive reverb that works for me and creates a nice atmosphere.
There’s just a little bit too much going on sometimes that muddies the mix BUT this album contains some extremely well crafted songs and musicianship by the members and Johnny Marr.
We Were Dead paces very well and with some masterpieces on here like “Spitting Venom” and “Little Motel”, this album holds up very well. The pump organ in “March into the Sea” is awesome and creates some good imagery for the rest of the way.

There’s so many clever lines in this album but the line in “You Will..” about cheating “go explore those other women, the geography of their bodies but there’s just one map you’ll need” is INCREDIBLY written.
Fevers & Mirrors songwriting may have been a little off putting at times, but Conor really starts to shine here.
I love the modest mouse influence in this EP (even it being long as fuck and consisting of songs more than good enough for a full length album). It sounds straight out of the 90s.
I really wish we coulda saw some more of this style of Car Seat Headrest.
