Mike Patton - Crank: High Voltage
NR

A soundtrack as crazy as the movie it's attached to. It's kinda like Fantômas at times, with some trip hop and stuff added.

Nisennenmondai - N
NR

I didn't plan more review rewrites today but @BreyDT checking out my rec made me revisit this.
Check out the music video for You Ishihara's mix of B-1, it's pretty cool: https://youtu.be/wo3xrfFKYOI

Nisennenmondai is an all-female trio named after the Japanese translation of the Y2K bug.
Their 2013 album, N, is minimal techno krautrock, you heard me right. That's because Nisennenmondai is a rock trio: Yuri Zaikawa on bass, Sayaka Himeno on drums and Masako Takada on guitar. ... read more

Les Rallizes Dénudés - Double Heads: Legendary Live Yaneura Shibuya, Tokyo 1980-1981
NR

Calling this Legendary Live may not be selling it well enough. 4 and a half hours, 3 amazing live shows, at worst the songs here are GREAT.
Now imagine actually being there.

Daft Punk - Homework
NR

Last review rewrite for today.
Homework is mostly bangers but it does miss at times. It's certainly different from their other albums, I mean, you don't have tracks like Rock'n Roll on Discovery, do you?

Krzysztof Komeda - Astigmatic
NR

POLSKA GUROM 🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱
Amazing avant-garde jazz and the first jazz album I listened to. Up there with the jazz classics!
Might as well be one of the best Polish albums.

I guess this starts of the wacky rollercoaster (https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/chtc/list/292014/aotys-wacky-rollercoaster/) but I'm not beginning that yet, I'm just redoing some older reviews. I'll get to it after finishing the 10x6=60CD BOX.

Do you like Batztoutai? Because here's even more of it! Alternate mixes and stuff from those sessions. The best Batztoutai related disc in Loop & Collage.

Merzbow - Batztoutai Mix
NR

10x6=60CD BOX / 60-45=15th DISC / https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/chtc/album/701857-10x660cd-box/
Happy birthday (I'm one day late) you bastard, you just had to slap AI art on a release yet again (Hannover Interference).
Different mix of the With Material Gadgets version and one of Mortegage Inc. Batzoutai from the Merzbox. If you're a fan of Batztoutai it's worth the listen.

Siekiera - Nowa Aleksandria
NR

POLSKA GUROM 🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱
Great coldwave record from late communist Poland. It's atmosphere and minimal lyrics perfectly transport you into those shitty times.

THE RISE AND FALL OF REDUX "HOLY SHIT WHY IS THIS ALBUM SO GOOD" / RIP UGH

While doing my Satapo deep dive 2 months ago (I'm gonna re-do that next year btw) I couldn't believe my eyes when looking at the unfinished list, something from their footwork material being the closest to Arkhaiomelisidonophunikheratos in terms of greatness? After finishing it, it stayed that way, solidified.

Satapo have been experimenting with juke/footwork for a few years at this point, combining ... read more

Merzbow - Antimony
NR

The first take of Sadomasochismo. Except for the first track it's completely different material, some unused Batztoutai material is here too. Both these releases are better than this.

Merzbow - Agni Hotra (2nd Mix)
NR

10x6=60CD BOX / 60-47=13th DISC / https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/chtc/album/701857-10x660cd-box/
Agni Hotra was supposed to be Merzbow's second LP but ultimately was never released, until the Merzbox. That was the 1st mix and with content different from what was supposed to be released, this one is the final master sent out to Psychout.

The title track is full of industrial loops that get switched after a while, with some noise getting gradually more and more intense in the ... read more

灰野敬二 [Keiji Haino] - わたしだけ?[Watashi dake?]
NR

I have already heard a few Keiji Haino collaborations and some Fushitsusha (really need to listen to Secret Black Box again) but I never really checked out his solo work, so I figured that I'd listen to his debut.
Keiji Haino with just his guitar and noise, all improvised. If I told you that this has a blues influence you would probably call me and Keiji crazy, because his guitar playing and vocals sound more like a mentally unstable man who doesn't really know how to play guitar (in ... read more

戸川純 [Jun Togawa] - 好き好き大好き [Suki Suki Daisuki]
NR

好き好き大好き isn't an ordinary album about love. (There's "Kiss me, as if you’re punching me, until my lips bleed. Hold me, until my ribs make a cracking sound as they break" in the title track and "Shape, love as a shape is three-dimensional, and with a geometric dance, you’re my prisoner" in 図形の恋 for example)
It's also not an ordinary synthpop album with it's rock/art pop elements and Jun going from cutesy vocals to not so ... read more

Merzbow - Age of 369 [Remastered]
NR

10x6=60CD BOX / 60-48=12th DISC / https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/chtc/album/701857-10x660cd-box/
Quite harsh actually, with it's use of radio, electronics, loops, metals, mics etc.
It's decent, but there's much better noise from Masami you could listen to, even in this era.

Merzbow - Le sang et la rose
NR

10x6=60CD BOX / 60-49=11th DISC / https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/chtc/album/701857-10x660cd-box/
I don't think I heard another Merzbow release like this, not surprised it was released under the name Lotus Club. Sure, there are releases you can compare this to sonically, like Yahatahachiman for example, but the vibe this gives off is completely different. This is a release that more people should hear!

Lo-fi drum machines, swirling synths and a distorted male vocal sample. On A1 you ... read more

Merzbow - Musick for Screen
NR

10x6=60CD BOX / 60-50=10th DISC / https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/chtc/album/701857-10x660cd-box/
The first half is good, unforgiving walls of noise are intertwined with distorted vocal samples and clean piano recordings.
The second one not so much, it's mostly tape manipulation that isn't as interesting as the first half. Later in the track it turns into a drone, so there's that.
This merzrelease deserves more ears for sure, even if the second half isn't special.

Merzbow - Expanded Musik 2
NR

10x6=60CD BOX / 60-51=9th DISC / https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/chtc/album/701857-10x660cd-box/
Finally something good after the dissappointment that is Yantra Material Action, Expanded Music 2 baby!
His first harsh noise album, maybe not as brutal or good as later ones, but it's fine for what it is.
Masami uses tapes, TV test signals, field recordings, rhythm machines, percussion instruments, feedback process audio mixers, and broken tape recorders to create what's probably a ... read more

I know I said I would go through this slower but I might as well finish shit like this ASAP so I can be dissapointed/pleased by the other discs.
Well, it's Yantra Material Action, a free improv Merz release so weak and unmemorable that the story surrounding it is miles more interesting.
It was supposed to be the first Merzbow album called Merz, released by Fool's Mate magazine. That ... read more

Merzbow - Collection:010 [Remastered]
NR

10x6=60CD BOX / 60-53=7th DISC / https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/chtc/album/701857-10x660cd-box/
Well, it's Collection 010, what can I say. The first track is just some guitar and bass playing over some noisy background. A drum machine gets thrown into the mix on the second track and it's an improvement from the first one.
The third one is the highlight with it's rapid radio sampling and tape use.

"Can you really love Bennett if you hate Sotos? He worked with him since the mid-80s, it's not like he didn't know about the arrest. Even after they kicked him out they still put the collage on this album and played it live. Best still seems to be on good terms with him, released a few books of his too. Bennett either had some kind of enlightment, or they had a personal falling out caused by something else."
