The fact he was nearly 40 when he made this is astonishing. This definitely feels like an album someone half his age would make.
I respect it more than I like it, but I still like it! It's goundbreaking and a necessary record and my favourite tracks are some of the best Bowie's ever been a part of, but it's not my favourite album he's ever done.
Possibly one of my favourite album covers of all time? And that's only a feeling I've had for a small while. My love for the actual album has been so for over a decade now.
Really does put into perspective how much creative input Cameron Picton had in the latter life of Black Midi. Lots of canterbury scene esque passages throughout the album as well as parts that wouldn't feel out of place on a Nick Drake record. While not as boisterous and definitely not as a abrasive as Geordie Greep's input, to that same band, it's still a great and creative record. Really shows the emotional scope both of them are capable of capturing onto an album.
An album you listen to when you're standing outside in the cold pretending you're some complex character with a dark backstory. Mesmerising and massive in scope, you forget it's all written by some 22 year old new yorker.
A powerful and unyielding cacophony of chaos that flies past you faster than you can even comprehend what happens in it. A fantastic send-off to a band that can easily be labeled as the 2020's King Crimson, and this being their Red.
Always found it interesting that a lot of critics who either made it their life's mission to hate prog rock or merely feigned some kind of indifference to prog rock always found some common ground with this record. Robert Christgau, infamous hater of Prog gave this an A, Anthony Fantano (not a prog hater) said this was a 10 in his interview with Black Midi, it's always intruiged me how this album has become the exception to the collective hatred and ridicule of prog rock in written ... read more
I definitely knew I was going to like it. I'd been bumping Music and Do It for the last three months. Was really glad to find out that the excitement I had for this was met. Awesome record. And one I don't doubt I'll find liking the more I listen to it.
Completely and utterly destroyed my limited and ignorant perception of salsa music
A bit harder a listen than I thought. I have to commend the experimentation but it's not as much for me as I thought it would be.
Ahead of its time, and not as stereotypical as other early "vaporwave" albums have become in recent years.
Consistently good from end to end. Didn't think Clipse's album would get topped as my favourite of the year but this might be the only contender.
Instrumentally this is probably the most beautiful and tripumphant album I've heard this year (and that's saying something!) but I feel the political message and its lyricism (which I totally and completely agree with, for what it's worth) feels like it relies on particular terms and "buzzwords" that get used to death by online circles too much. I can't help but feel it falls flat lyrically. Replayability I feel is something that is probably going to be an issue ... read more
