You can tell they didn't have a defined sound yet and just had to go off NCT first. WISH is messy and doesn't sound well produced at all. Feels like they just threw something against the wall and hoped it stuck and while it does have a frame of what would become their signature colorful sound it doesn't stand well and the damn chanting brings it down. Sail Away is equally uninteresting and the instrumental is far too powerful for the group's bright vocals.
8-BIT HEART genuinely would be in contention for the greatest song of the year if NMIXX didn't have the run they had. This is absolutely insane.
ITZY has been on a bit of a streak of doing whatever and it continues with Tunnel Vision, which changes their sound to a more gritty chanting sound with a catchy post chorus "ah-ah yea, ah-ah yea" that does tie the song in together but is still weak. Focus is SHOCKINGLY great for an intro song and ends far too early to go anywhere but ... read more
I don't know I think she has the pop formula down. This is great. Girl's Girl and Midnight Sun are definetly the highlights, two dance-pop songs that just feel like absolute blessings on the ears at certain points (see: Girl's Girl second pre-chorus instrumental). The rest of the songs aren't anything particularly out-of-this-world mindblowing but they're great and lovely pop. While some of the songs (Pretty Ugly, Crush) took a bit to click with me, I am totally able to ... read more
Unfortunately fairly weak except for the lovely ending part but I do think this shows that ASND can do the original fromis_9 sound from before. They are just trying to figure out how they want the girls to sound and what they can do and I'm all here for the transitional phase even if it produces some mediocrity.
Went into this thinking that it was overly hyped and there's no way it would be as good as people say it is. It was as good as people say it is. Not much else to say.
Room of Fools from FKA twigs' EUSEXUA feels directly downstream from this whole album. She should have removed Mer Girl though because it's the worst song and just okay compared to the incredibleness of the rest of these songs.
Amazing work. This is what the second half of the original THAT'S SHOWBIZ BABY! needed to be. Song after song perfecting her sound and being dance-pop perfection that feels right at home with the singles previously release. Nothing else to say, From the vocals to Frozen to the vocal repetition in If My Heart Was A House to her voice in Use Me she has it down. There are of course some caveats and it's not perfect and still does have the rest of the album that drags it down but ... read more
GREAT singles. Angel Of My Dreams is an incredibly powerful song that just hits and while it was probably not the original intro, it still feels like a great introduction to a vocally powerful album. Despite IT girl being a change in tone, it's still good, and FUFN (Fuck You For Now) picks up the pace back to where it was before. Plastic Box, Midnight Cowboy, and Fantasy are solid songs that continue the previously mentioned pace, and Unconditional finishes it off strong with an incredibly ... read more
Iconic SHINee sound in the title track that's just beautiful, but it doesn't finish well and the "CALL ME POET | ARTIST" part can fumble from time to time. Starlight is another okay track, nothing great but it does have that funky sound that is hard to fuck up. Overall 'okay'. Jonghyun's voice being there bumped it up a bit because of how great his vocals are.
Really consistent and beautiful album that strikes a good balance between having repeatable songs that get stuck in your mind and also being a good consistent experience. The only questionable song in my opinion was lone star with the drums. I feel like there was a vision there but I didn't really get it at all and it was definitely the worst track on the album for me. Other than that, this is a beautiful jazzy album that shows off his voice incredibly. His singing voice and rapping voice ... read more
She spends 2/3rds of this album doing absolutely nothing. Just iterating over the same exact sound and concept for 9 or 10 tracks. However, when she hits, she absolutely hits.
Halo is the highlight of the album, showing her vocal talent and going absolutely crazy near the end of it. A classic Beyoncé song that deserves its fame. Ave Maria is a cute song that stood out from Disc 1's bland and uninteresting ballads because of the Spanish in it, so while it isn't particularly ... read more
This album is really an experience that you don't get anymore and that's incredible. Starting this album with Pray You Catch Me was already a good choice, starting really really strong, but this album has so many strong beats that it's hard to beat just how powerful of an experience it is.
Don't Hurt Yourself (feat. Jack White) is the first insane song here, just being so powerful and emotionally moving while showing Beyonce's vocal talent. 6 Inch (feat. The Weeknd) ... read more
Sonically, this doesn't really appeal to me. The heavy reliance on noise and rock is definetly something that isn't made for me and I understand that. There was only one song that really stood out to me (which I'll go over later). However, this album really shinies lyrically. This album made me really respect the lyrics a lot more instead of pushing them a little to the side in favor of the beat.
Johnny johnny johnny is the first song where I had to pause and just marvel at ... read more
A lovely rock album that probably would have radiated more with me if I tuned in right when she dropped the singles after. I'm not really the biggest fan of this sound but some of the later songs are done incredibly well, with True Believer, Dream Girl In Shibuya, and Parachute being a tentative top 3 best on the album at the moment. I think the album started to sound samey really late on, but at best it's a nitpick and otherwise it was really well done and incredibly produced.
This is definetly an EP by Teddy! That's all I can say.
HANDS UP is definetly the stand out here, with a trap beat that keeps you hooked onto the song during the whole runtime. While it doesn't particularly do anything outstanding, it's pretty solid and has a lovely dance break. Definetly their most listenable offering so far. BODY is a tough performance song that's definetly not based on vocals but the addictive "body body, ooh, body body yeah" does get stuck in ... read more
It's like the Kirkland-brand equivalent of Dua Lipa stocked in bulk at Costco. You can find atleast 3 tracks that do exactly this but better. The mixing is especially egregious and the vocals are too loud for the instrumental. It's hard to screw up Nu-Disco though, so it's not terrible. Just okay.
Someone on Twitter said that this is baroque to the point where they'd understand if somebody might find it gaudy and like... yes! Exactly! It's big, it's bold, it's ridiculous, it's Raye doing the absolute most and her big ass band doing even most-er! She pulls it off perfectly, too. This is a perfect sound for her and I'm so ready for her future releases. Her talent is out of this world.
Is it the most basic K-pop sound ever? Yes. But I needed this. This is just so lovely that I can't get over how fun each track is, whether it be the powerful chorus of Bump It or the vocal chops in PARTY or the absolutely insane whistle note background vocal in Talk Talk, it's just classic K-pop that feels like it's aged so well. The best songs here are definetly Bump It, Green Light, and Talk Talk. Lion Heart seems like the weakest track despite not even being bad, just okay and ... read more
This is a confusing ass single in both quality and musical idea. RED (Beggin') is a shockingly good track that interpolates Beggin' by The Four Seasons in the post chorus to create this incredibly powerful track that makes good use of their voices. Definetly a great choice and sounds lovely. The rest of this single is where the quality fumbles, specifically with empty. empty is Bad. Like, not even entertainingly bad; this is Terrible. It's boring and ear-grating and I don't ... read more
Oh my God. I didn't even realize someone could produce tracks in a way that makes them sound this incredible. GO! starts it off a little strange but eventually picks up with the ritualistic sound that continuously blesses this album and makes it feel like a cohesive experience, while also being the reason for some of the better parts of the songs. The high points of this album are so consistently scattered along tracks; the bassline on God from the Machine with the absolutely heavenly ... read more
Easily one of the best lead singles in K-pop of the 2020s with TTYL, a pop track that makes you want to dance and invades your ears with how beautiful and powerful it is, despite having some confusing lyrics and questionable decisions. Overall a great great song. FANATICISM is a lovely intro and deserved more than people are giving it right now; just because it's short doesn't make it great. The rest of the album is quite repetitive though and brings down the rating quite a bit; it ... read more
