I thought this would be a lot more of a masterpiece considering the absolute across the board praise Kelela and this album gets, and while it's good, I don't think it's really everything that people say it is. The songs generally grab my attention during the second half of the song (Happy Ending, Missed Call, Sorbet), and her production is so incredible at points, but generally it's... just good. It has great sections, but most of it is just like "Yeah this is a good ... read more
Incredibly produced album with a questionable second half that generally drags down the quality and probably would have felt better if it wasn't back to back okay-isms. However, SINNY SINNY and Out of My Mind are just really great and if everything else was at that level this would be one of the best K-pop albums ever made. I'm really impressed and did not know that a YG artist could put stuff like this out, considering their track records with questionable songs.
Such a lovely album. I'm really not a country person but she manages to immerse you so deeply into the songs with just her voice and it really feels like I'm being told stories about a time before my own. I hope to dive into more of her albums eventually because this really was just beautiful and I have not much to say. Even if you don't like country, you should try this album out just because it's so incredible. I just wish the songs were more unique and didn't mold ... read more
Really considered this rating for a long time because it's such high praise for an album that definitely is Just RnB but like WOW. This is incredible. Just so well done and clearly made with heart because each song feels so good and the lowest points are still so incredible; only limbo (feat. Colde) is uninteresting and it's still not even bad, just something I wouldn't listen to. The high points of this album are absolutely amazing; Passion, Pain & Pleasure alongside Energy ... read more
She has potential going in this direction. Venom is a really strong song that definitely feels like the highlight of the album and feels just experimental enough to make her voice pop out. I'd love to see more of this style from her, but the rest of the album doesn't hit as hard as that song in particular and makes it feel like a really really strong start with a questionable mid and a solid ending. However, a lot of these songs are great, and the last 3 of the album wraps it up ... read more
Her vocals definetly carry this whole album. They're incredibly sweet and well done, and when it's used properly it creates some of the best songs released this year (in particular, Genius comes to mind). Other standout songs are Love Me Not and Love Is Blind, but a lot of this album ends up blending together in comparison to those 3 standouts. I would have liked to see a little bit more variance, but she still makes a really solid album here and has potential to make a masterpiece.
Really incredible chorus that seems almost burdened by the rest of the song. The verses (especially the first verse) feel really choppy and unorganized which while being very J-pop of them still sounds odd especially with the very clear SM production they have. It feels like they were trying to recreate what happened with Next Level and how that song is uniquely organized without understanding what made Next Level work as a song.
Arguably the most consistent of P1Harmony's offerings that seemed to get everything right and ended up as a perfect ending to the set of trilogies. JUMP is an incredibly danceable song that was a good new direction for P1H to go and it ended up well with the vocal production in particular being fairly outstanding—a trend that would continue across this album.
Love Me For Me is the 'hype man song of the album', but it's executed significantly better this time, flowing ... read more
Outstanding in concept but okay in execution. I love the idea of having a violin in such a unique genre and having it tie into the entire concept and production of the album, but it ends up feeling a bit forced. Most of these songs have their best parts with out it, and in the case of some tracks (Pelicans in the Summer), it ends up sounding a bit too much and muddies the song's direction.
However, there are some standout songs here, specifically with Iceland Moss and Coming Up providing ... read more
Back Down is really good. Well done and sonically pleasing track that fits the developed aesthetic for P1H at the time perfectly. Just incredible work from their team overall. However, the B-sides on this EP may just be their worst set.
BFF simply is nothing. There's nothing good or bad to say. Better Together, One and Only, and Look at Me Now would be the last of the sound that plagued early P1Harmony and you can tell an impact needed to be made because these were overwhelmingly ... read more
A little bit confusing, but a step in the right direction for them in my opinion. Doom Du Doom was definetly a questionable choice for the title track but it actually turns out pretty good when you watch the choreography and understand this is intended to be a performance song. Black Hole is that authentic loud early P1Harmony sound, and while it isn't great I wouldn't call it bad. Yes Man and Different Song for Me are uninteresting rehashes of the ballad and hype-man-track that ... read more
Easily the low point of P1Harmony's discography. All of the songs here are at best uninteresting and bland (lacking the style and substance that made their first 2 EPs at least interesting) and at worst a slog to get through. The only song that I feel like could be reworked into a properly good song is That'$ Money and it would take a lot of tweaking for it not to be an average loud boy group song. Very unfortunate.
We did not need this many interludes. Seriously. I understand that this was a time before streaming but seriously that is an unbelievable amount of interludes to where it's almost half the album.
However, it makes up for it in having some of the highest highs I've ever heard in an album, with Velvet Rope (feat. Vanessa-Mae) simply being an all-timer 5 minutes of heaven, and Go Deep and Free Xone back to back showing off both her vocal talent and the incredible production that goes ... read more
Any Song onwards Zico's been showing himself as one of the strongest Korean solo artists in a while with such strong and interesting visions for each song. I'm also a sucker for simple pop that just sounds good and appeasing to the ears, and this is it. It's just good. Almost addictive. While it's not perfect and ends way too early to be considered a full single it's a cute snippet of what could be an incredible song. Maybe next time.
Really pissed me off to my core but I promised myself when making this account that I wouldn't be biased and just focus on the quality of the music so I do have to regrettably say it's okay. Production is shockingly solid and while the autotuning on their voices at certain points is a bit egregious they generally did okay. I wish this wasn't well done. I really do.
It's solid. Nothing great but nothing terrible either. TEMPO is an incredibly addictive song and while it's missing that oomph that puts it over the edge and makes it great, it's still a lovely song and will be going in my playlist. Minho's voice goes great with the sound he's putting out here. Only thing I wish is that he did the vocal chopping more than just at the end because it sounds really incredible.
You're Right is a stereotypical slow song that actually ... read more
Definetly a great album compared to the rest of the solos but it tends to fall flat in some places. The entire record feels a little incoherent and Jennie never really cements a sound here besides the 'overlying R&B' sound seen in parts of like JENNIE, ZEN, ExtraL, and Seoul City amongst other places. However, the highs are INCREDIBLY high. ZEN is such an appealing experience especially with her voice and I'd love for her to branch out farther into this style of music in her ... read more
When I reviewed this for the first time, I didn't get it and I gave it a low 70. Now I understand. Some of these songs are some of the most harrowing experiences music can possibly offer. Despite there being some sticklers that aren't the greatest in daybed and holy terrain, this album still has atleast 1 10/10 in sad day and incredibly evocative and interesting experiences in home with you, fallen alien, mary magdalene, and ESPECIALLY cellophane. It's terrifying that someone can ... read more
Really sonically appealing. I listened to the 2018 remaster and then checked to see if the 1985 original was different and it hardly was, which really shocked me because of how absolutely insane and new this sounds. It's like she was years ahead of everyone else and the fact she was able to do this so early on is incredible. Her voice works so well and the backing vocals in each song (especially The Big Sky) are just perfection and it feels like something a lot of people have taken ... read more
Hands Up is a pretty solid song overall with a strange intro and a REALLY powerful chorus that actually makes sense in this song (something that didn't make sense at all with WISH) and We Go! is a strange song that tries to do ballad and powerful song that inspires you or whatever but it doesn't really hit and doesn't exactly have a good part that it ends off on. It just keeps building up to Something and that strange "We go, we go, we go" scattered across the song ... read more
