I think it says a lot that the only song on this album that actually got a passing grade from me is Last Christmas - which is also the only actual Eurodance song on this album. I mean, come on. It's a Cascada album, it's twelve tracks long, and only one of them is something you can dance to? That's just embarrassing in all honesty.
For the more straight-down-the-middle tracks on this album, my main issue is a lack of direction or identity. The production doesn't really make ... read more
I've always accepted that I don't get Neil Cicierega. Sure, I - like everyone - can recognise that Two Trucks is an utter masterpiece, but I've often found his music leaves me in the cold whilst others rave about it. To some extent, I feel that way here. Don't get me wrong, talent is exuding all through this project, but I just can't view this guy as the utter indietronica genre-defining artist that he seems to be treated as. Very good album, just not quite amazing.
The only one of these that is an original Christmas song is actually weirdly racist. Not the best thing on the Christmas calendar for sure.
Every one of these six songs makes it clear the title is very true. This is a Christmas themed album and it's undoubtedly, unabashedly Los Campesinos. The weakest on here is probably the final track; no one can ever make that song sound so melancholically pining as the Mud original. But I absolutely adore Kindle a Flame In Her Heart. Brilliant album.
Whilst Kylie Minogue, of course, has a very strong voice - and this is made clear on Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - that isn't quite enough to carry an album like this. It's a little too long for an album of mostly covers played straight down the middle, it doesn't give you a hook to keep listening. It's fine but it's really not much more than that.
Surprisingly for a Christmas album - though rather unsurprisingly for The Killers - this is a very strong project. I especially love 'Joseph, Better You Than Me' and 'Christmas in LA'. Good work.
she IS the queen of uncommon performances. this songs makes me daj mi beat my meat
I simply don't agree this could be single figures or even a rating below 20. The final track is genuinely epic with how Shatner interacts with the music, and this is so funny I enjoyed it more than albums I think are better.
I have the utmost respect for what RuPaul Charles has done for drag in the modern cultural zeitgeist. Hell, I'll even accept that Supermodel rips. These songs (except for the pretty good My Favorite Holiday) do not rip so much as rip off Pete Waterman's dated pop sound. In a word... meh.
Your mileage is likely to vary very significantly with this album depending on if you like Sinatra-style big band music or not. I do and thus this is a ten-strong set of enjoyable renditions of classic tracks.
The industrial vibes of Little Drummer Boy is what I look for from this artist. Silent Night rendition is incredibly pretty. Decent little project.
Well done TWICE, you got yourself a passing mark. Only just, but you did. For every song on here that is actually a good time and that I'd happily jam along to, there's another that is unpleasant and has baffling production decisions. Fifteen songs, probably about six songs too long.
I dunno lads. I wasn't expecting a magnum opus but even Poppy herself doesn't seem to have any energy whatsoever for this one. Cure for insomnia.
Maybe I'm not as holly and jolly as Ema but while this is very much a passable album, it's not much more. How you can even make In Dulci Jubilo boring is beyond me.
Whilst the original songs on here showcase Phoebe Bridgers' not insignificant level of lyricism and musicological talent, I actually think the best songs on here are the tearjerking rendition of Tom Waits' Day After Tomorrow and the Merle Haggard holiday classic If We Make It Through December. This is what a Christmas record is meant to be. It doesn't suffer from bloat like Neil Diamond's attempt. It doesn't lose the artist's identity like Weezer's EP. ... read more
I'd say that this album's main problem was its twenty-five song tracklist but that would be untrue. It certainly doesn't help. But the main issue is that this set of songs is just incredibly samey and rather boring. Neil still has a competent voice but the instrumentation is sparse and the songs mainly just old standards. Not worth revisiting.
It seems like @EmaOfTheYear will finally be getting a break from pure shit and gets to enjoy some mid. Honestly? I did not mind this at all, would happily relisten.
There is often a case to be made that late-career Cher sounds more like a drag artists impression of Cher than the woman herself in her prime. This album would be a very strong piece of supporting evidence for that hypothesis.
For every hit, and there's not many songs here if consider good, there's probably 2 terrible EDM tracks with a ton of processing on the vocals or even, in one case, a trap song. For some reason. This album isn't terrible but precisely zero songs have ... read more
