At first, I was really disappointed by this new Animal Collective album. The many meandering sounds and Avey's distant voice were the biggest problems - all due to an unfinished production and a kind of live recording. SOPHIE had made a really powerful and innovative track with It's Okay To Cry but here, she almost returns to the caricatural sound of Product's second half, losing the catchiness and the perfect songwriting of her first singles Bipp/Elle and Hard/Lemonade. Even if in appearance, It's Okay To Cry had less in common with those tracks than the bouncing Ponyboy and Faceshopping, it actually had their melodies and structure qualities. Apart from the last two magnificent Panda Bear's albums, this is the best anco-related release since Down There.
