This first mixtape from Drake is a really fascinating look at the somewhat humble origins of the soon-to-be megastar that is Drizzy. This honestly surprised me how much R&B Drake was implementing into his music even before he got massive, so much so that at times this album feels more like an R&B album than a rap album. Kinda makes me wish Drake had just gone down to be an R&B artist instead of being a rapper since I think I generally liked the R&B stuff here more than his rap, ... read more
One of my friends recommended I give this a listen and so I did. I liked it, though I would hesitate to say that I appreciate it for all it is. I don’t play any instruments myself so I don’t know if I totally appreciate the drums or guitars in the same way that many do, but I can at least recognize that they were impressive. Some solid classic rock for sure.
Just for funsies I decided to take a trip down memory lane and re-evaluate what was once 12 year old me’s favorite album. This album, is not great do NOT get me wrong, Yesterday and Dancing In The Dark are abysmal, but try as I might I don’t think I can ever really hate this album. The over the top pop rock of it wears thin after a while for I just have a lot of nostalgia for this album and as such I don’t want to hate on it too much.
Note: There are a few tracks from the original tracklist that are not available on Spotify and as such I didn’t listen to them. I believe my opinion of this album remains in tact regardless and would not change if I did listen to said tracks.
This is very cute. J. Cole’s debut mixtape isn’t anything great by any means, but you can tell the hunger in his voice when he’s rapping. When he says he wants to be one of the greats, you believe him. It’s also really ... read more
I’m not familiar with black midi, although after looking at their discography I’ve put them on the list and at some point I’ll probably check out their music. In the mean time, My New Band Believe. This is an interesting experimental folk rock album that was reminiscent of Black Country, New Road, and while I thought it was good, I didn’t think there was all that much about it that really grabbed me. I really liked Love Story, and I thought the singing and ... read more
And finally, the main event itself. This album was always going to have the reputation of ‘the first solo Drake release post-Kendrick’ but man Drake really drives that point home in practically every single song on this record. He refuses to acknowledge that he lost and seems to think that if he can just twist the narrative enough that somehow it will undo Not Like Us and the general public’s opinion of him. I hate to be discussing the Drake Kendrick beef in 2026, but Drake ... read more
Not a whole lot better than HABIBTI, but I guess I would rather listen to this over that since this is the fun type of bad where there’s actually stuff to talk about unlike the other one where it’s just saying ‘it’s boring’ over and over. Still, this thing is also garbage. Some of the least sexy club ‘bangers’ I’ve ever heard with some of the most embarrassing interpolations ever conceived (the cha cha slide? Really??). This album made me feel ... read more
Proud to say I didn’t completely lose interest in this! Black metal may not be my thing entirely, but there is some banger instrumentation on this album. The screaming can be a bit much for me at times, but that’s not really the albums fault, more so mine cause I’m ignorant to this genre. I don’t really have much to say on this other than I listened to it and think that it is good and if you enjoy death metal or black metal in any regard then I would recommend this album ... read more
Yeah this lives up to the hype. Here's the thing, I can't exactly pinpoint why it is that this is annoying, it just sorta is y'know? Like, I hate to use that line of reasoning for this album, but I really just couldn't stand this at all at any point while listening. It swings between being painfully annoying and painfully average, with the first half having these weird ahh hip hop style beats that must have cost a fortune to get produced by so many big names and the second ... read more
Okay people, I definitely don't think this album is anywhere near as bad as you all were saying it is. First off, the instrumentation is very exciting throughout the album, it's a little repetitive after a certain point, but you play any song individually and you will be banging your head to the instrumental at least. On the other hand, the vocals and lyrics. Dave Mustaine had throat cancer recently so I won't harp on his vocals sounding a little off here, but I will say that his ... read more
I recognize the quality of this record, but it's really just not my thing. I very rarely say that about music but between this and the Injury Reserve album I listened to a few months ago, I think it's pretty obvious that this form of moody experimental hip hop, at least by this group, just doesn't totally click with me. Like I said though, this is still certainly a good album. I like the production and the atmosphere created by the record, and the lyrics and the pervasive ... read more
I literally have like nothing to say about this album. It's fine, nothing good, nothing bad, perfectly average. If you're into this sort of album then you'll like this, if you are indifferent to this sort of music don't bother.
Yeah, I wasn’t feeling this one all that much. Noah Kahan is pretty good at writing catchy songs, and there are a few of those here, Doors, Downfall, and basically everything from The Great Divide up to Porch Light is all some pretty good stuff imo. The problem is the songs I don’t like are either painfully boring or, in the later third of the album, straight up bad songs that I actively dislike. Still, I think the album is okay, just nothing all too special to write home about.
This is a very fascinating career-killing album to me, because it doesn’t do anything wrong, it’s not even really a bad album by any means. It’s just that while you are listening to it, it is so obvious that we don’t need Bruno Mars anymore and his music can largely be ignored outside of potentially one hit single every so often. It’s a bit sad to see one of the the top dogs of pop from the early 2010s fall into such a category, but it’s kinda whatever. I ... read more
The main thought I kept having while listening to this album is just how beautiful it is. This is a great evolution of the formula that Dylan had created with his debut, except now he feels a lot more specifically topical. The focus on the kind of person that Bob Dylan is and the thoughts he has make this album feel very personal, like you’re listening to a friend, or maybe just some crazy guy at the bar who has opinions and wants to make them known. Either way, it’s endearing. His ... read more
I can only imagine what it must have been like to listen to this album upon its release. It just had felt like the greatest collection of music ever put together by man, cause at the it kinda was. The entire first half of this album is loaded with classics like Come Together and Oh! Darling (which is my pick for the best Beatles track btw), and I will ALWAYS go to bat for Octopus’s Garden. Even the deeper cuts on the first half of the album are incredible in their writing and production. ... read more
Yeah, I don’t know what I was expecting but I guess this is exactly it. Perfect music for if I ever wanna catch some gnarly waves, otherwise it’s fine. Fun for sure, but it’s not like there’s a lot substance here. That’s okay though. Sometimes an album doesn’t have to be a complex breakdown of society or an evaluation of the artists character, sometimes music can just be about hitting the beach in the 60s with your surfboard. Hang ten.
I liked this. Simple and folksy, basically nothing more than one guy, a guitar, and sometimes a harmonica for the most part. Dylan’s interesting vocals are in fact, interesting. There’s really not a lot to say here other than this is clearly the debut album of an artist who would go on to become a legend. If this is your thing, you’ve probably already listened to this album.
This album kinda crept up on me cause it wasn’t until very recently that I started to think it might actually be worthy of 10/10 status. From the second that Smells Like Teen Spirit kicks off, Nirvana’s Nevermind is relentless. Every song has a kind of energy you don’t get from just any album, even the slower songs like Polly and Something In The Way give this album the sort of vibe you just can’t find anywhere else. The muddy production and the slurring vocals are ... read more
