Individually, I love each song on this album, however alongside eachother they sound far too similar, even for a rock band. Overall, a great debut!
It lures you in with relatively lighter tracks, then goes all heavy and devastating on you and it's bliss.
Favourite: Right Where It Belongs
Least Favourite: With Teeth
If I HAD to say something I liked, I'd say the instrumental was occasionally decent, and some melodies were satisfying. Although this isnt a consistent thing either because songs like Good Graces had absolutely horrendous instrumentals and melodies.
I wasn't particularly impressed by this album the first time round, having given it a 69/100, so I always knew I owed this a relisten considering it's user score.
After my relisten, it didn't really change my mind. Some songs I disliked more and some songs I like more. This album divides me, I adore about two thirds of the tracklist and then the other third just bores me completely out of my mind. House of Cards was honestly challenging to sit through all 5 and a half minutes ... read more
Origin of Symmetry released in 2001, 2 years after their debut album, Showbiz. This is an amazing follow up from that album. It invalidates almost any "derivative of Radiohead" comparisons that were made then (though people still compare the bands.) Showbiz was an album that showed so much potential, and here they really built on that.
Musically, it IS a little front heavy, but not so much so that it escapes from a 100.
13 is so beautiful. Mostly written after Damon's breakup with Justine, you can tell how his mental state was in this period from listening to this album. I will always prefer later, depressed Blur, as opposed to comically British Blur. Lots of the songs have a hidden track, and it works so well, especially as the album progresses into insanity. This is done especially well on Caramel, Bugman and Battle.
Generally, songs on this album fall into 2 categories (with some falling into both): ... read more
Will finish tomorrow I dropped my headphones in the toilet in the middle of Listen Up
UPDATE: This is better than everything else they released in the 90's.
Full of filler and the amount of songs is kinda dumb because it makes you realise rhey kinda sound similar but this is great 4 real
It isn't that bad but FUCK is this album bipolar. It was supposed to feel like a "greatest hits" album and does that with the weird mishmash of genres but it just gives me whiplash. My hopes and expectations for the next album is that they keep pumping out fire riffage (because this album DOES have it) and actually... produce a coherent sound.
This album is really fucking funny and self aware of how silly they sound, but just because it's a satire of itself that ... read more
Started and ended perfectly but in-between was just slightly above average waffle. Could've been a great 10 song album.
I'm gonna talk about this album's concept, because this is a concept album. I think it's an amazing concept but was just done horribly. Think a broken man, supposedly dead inside, fucking having enough and proceedingly nukes the world. That is so ridiculous but so Muse, I am all for it. However, it's done really poorly. The theme is not clear at all, apart from in The Globalist, but even then it's easily mistakeable that the concept is just for that single song. The ... read more
Andy isn't the greatest singer but I would've liked to hear his voice more on this album. Overall, sweet but nothing special
I WANT this to be a 100, but it's not. The highs are so high but 3 certain tracks spoil it...
Still, how this doesn't have a must hear is beyond me, it's such an iconic album.
BONUS TRACK, GLAMOUROUS INDIE ROCK & ROLL: 10/10
Individually, each song on here is great, but what makes this album better is that they are pieced so well in the tracklist. The title track opener starts this off with a bang, basically welcoming us to Sam's Town, which is then carried into Enterlude. Usually I would rate songs like that, but the 2 on here work so well, so I think it's fair I do. Exitlude recalling the very first part of the album just makes for an excellent closer.
