Kali Uchis - Isolation
82

Elite track after elite track. While still relatively small, Kali Uchis has one of the most consistent discographies of a modern soul/R&B artist and I'm surprised no one talks about it much...

JID - God Does Like Ugly
84

I don't know why I slept on it for so long, it's such an enjoyable listen actually. There weren't any bad songs, just songs that don't fully match my taste like Sk8, but regardless of my preferences and nitpicks, still a solid album

A$AP Rocky - Don't Be Dumb

I don't know how to explain my thoughts... It's like a free spirited album and I like that. Also STFU is overhated 😭😭🙏

CXS - Holy Moly

Longest 8 minutes ever. If you have the time to listen to Mural by Lupe Fiasco, then you have time for this😭 (jokes)

Common - Be

This album just feels so uplifting, I don't know if that's just me. Common's lyrics, flow and storytelling on this project is unparalleled, almost like I can feel his his passion and inspiration within myself when I listen to his raps. That's how effective his lyrics and delivery are at conveying his thoughts, messages, and story. The chemistry between him and Kanye is also insane, the beats Kanye makes are high tier and Common just slides on them like an ice skater. ... read more

Jack Harlow - Monica

Jack Harlow returns with a new album and sound trajectory, and it's commendable enough.

While he has come through with a new sound with a project that's among one of his more cohesive ones, I can't say I love this project.

I do like certain tracks and I can more or less hang with his mellow low vocals, but as an avid soul/R&B listener, there isn't really anything crazy new about this project. The lyrics while I'm sure come from a good place aren't anything ... read more

Daft Punk - Discovery

Such a thrilling listen from top to bottom. There is this irreplicable energy that the band manages to create that's so fun and upbeat a lot of the time. They are so insanely good at sampling it almost feels fake at times and their electronic funky sound just sounds likes nostalgia, if it had to have a sound. While a lot of the songs are upbeat, I appreciate tracks like nightvision that are Ike a canvas, in that the instrumentation sort of forces you to absorb the moment and helps you ... read more

Stevie Wonder - Talking Book

I liked how often he used synths in a lot of the songs, I found my self most impressed in the case of You got it bad. The rest of the songs are great but not all of them are super groundbreaking to me. I found you and I to be a nice piano ballad with emotional songwriting. I can say the same for blame it on the sun, just a beautiful and poetic piece of music. And my favorite track is Superstition (duh) it just sounds the most ahead of its time in the album. I also think it hard carried the ... read more

Jeff Buckley - Grace

I stumbled across this album completely by chance and decided to give it a listen. What a lucky moment that was. Has to be luckier than picking up an Unused fast food coupon.

It hasn't been 24 hours since I've listened to it but it's already rotated my playlist a couple of times now. The emotional and poetic songwriting, those hypnotic and awe striking guitar riffs and not to mention his heart wrenching vocals... Everything in this album is so well put together, evocative and ... read more

I don't know what it is I was listening to in high school but yeah... If straight cardboard had rhythm. There are some ups but not by much and are outweighed by Hella mid...

J. Cole - Born Sinner
73

For some reason I always overthink how to start my reviews.

Anyways I think this was definitely a solid project and is quite high up in Cole's discography. However I do have nitpicks, like the lack of following the concept of a "born Sinner" fully. A lot of the songs do portray some sort of sin, but sometimes the interludes can just take away from the themes making them less visible.

Villuminati
Cole starts by taking a very braggadocious and somewhat controversial angle in his ... read more

J. Cole - The Off-Season

I'll admit I haven't revisited this one much since it dropped. A lot of the songs probably still need to be revisited so I can "build" a love for them. So I'll probably be listening to it again

And I'll leave this here so that it's like a letter from my past life ✌️✌️ at least until after I listen to the album again

Olivia Dean - The Art of Loving
82

I personally like what she did here. She didn't revolutionize the sound of the genre by any means but she played it safe brilliantly so. Each track has a different sound and speaks on different allusions to the concept of love which in itself is vast, so the album feels like it's complimenting the idea of the miltifacetedness of love. For me the tracks I liked were Close Up and Man I need (boohoo a mainstream take blah blah, silence 🤫) either way I'd like to believe that to a ... read more

Sade - Diamond Life
98

Had sit with this for a few listens and now that I have I can genuinely say: I'm struggling to find anything wrong rith his album. Sade's smooth lowkey vocals and always pleasant to hear and her songwriting is just so straightforward and flowery. The instrumentation is some godly stuff, from the bass to saxophone work, every instrument collaborates to create a jazzy and sophisticated atmosphere that's laid-back and danceable when it needs to be. Overall it's an excellent ... read more

GIVĒON - BELOVED

Giveon really did his thing. I love how he did something new with this album and how he handled the storytelling across the Tracklist. The journey from anger and projection to acceptance and longing just shows how far he's come as an artist and possibly that we should expect greater things from him

Frank Ocean - Blonde
96

Some peak storytelling and enamoring soundscapes. The story tells of frank and his lover and how the transition from puppy love to breaking apart and him coming out of it matured. There's genuinely a lot to say here. This album is cinematically written with how you can See Frank experience character development as the album progresses and songs like Ivy and Self Control being flashbacks or narrative breaks to give context to Frank Ocean's character and the way he loves. All in all its ... read more

Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE

Such a diverse listening experience. And no matter who you are, if you have even slightly related to an experience on one of the songs, it will hit so hard for no reason! For example Bad Religion is soooo my heartbreak anthem and Forrest Gump just feels like a love letter finally admitting that you were denying your feelings the entire time. Every song evokes a different feeling or mood and there's just nothing wrong with any of it. In the couplet of Mr. Ocean's released discography, ... read more
