Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason
67

Man… this one’s a weird chapter for Pink Floyd. After Roger Waters left, basically leaving The Wall and The Final Cut as two super personal Waters albums, the band was never really the same. I get it, tensions happen, people go their own way, but David Gilmour clearly wanted to keep the name alive and make something new. And he did, but honestly, this feels more like a David Gilmour solo project than a proper Pink Floyd album. The other guys had no hand in it, and it shows.

Ed Sheeran - Play
43

Okay, a new Ed Sheeran album… well, honestly, I didn’t walk into this with high expectations. Ed never really made great music in my eyes. Not always completely bad, but most of it just comes off as bland, overly simple, and way too safe. That’s his style, nothing wrong with that, but I don’t think we need to pretend he’s some incredible, once-in-a-generation musician. The radio stations love him, and good for them, but for me, he’s always been more miss ... read more

Michael Jackson - Bad
93

After the absolute perfection of Off the Wall and Thriller, MJ came through again with another masterpiece, Bad, and let me tell you, it’s everything but… well, bad. Right from the start, this album screams Michael Jackson at his peak, it’s confident, daring, and he’s simply unafraid to push his sound forward.

By this point, MJ was already a global superstar. He’d set the bar sky-high with two of the greatest albums ever, and there was the looming question: could ... read more

Miguel - New Martyrs (Ride 4 U)
85

Finally, Miguel’s back!!! Man, it’s been way too long. With his last album dropping in 2017, we were really overdue for some new music. In the meantime, he’s been teasing us here and there with singles, and for a while it looked like he was leading up to that Viscera project. But that whole thing never actually came out. We got that wild performance where he was literally hanging with hooks in his back. I don’t know what kind of headspace he was in around that time, but ... read more

Prince - Sign "☮︎" the Times
100

Speechless… man, this album just means the world to me. After already dropping one of the most legendary runs anyone’s ever seen in the 80s with Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day and Parade, and being one of the biggest superstars on the planet, Prince somehow still managed to raise the bar even higher. With Sign “O” the Times, he dropped one of the greatest albums ever made. This is right up there with Purple Rain, no doubt about ... read more

Drake - DOG HOUSE
40

Drake… man… how do you manage to kill the hype every time you drop a new single? With What Did I Miss? I was actually pleasantly surprised. That track had me thinking maybe, just maybe, Iceman could turn out to be a decent Drake album again. Then he drops Which Ones with Central Cee, and that one was straight-up dogshit. And now Dog House with Yeat and Julia Wolf isn’t it either.

The most frustrating part is how much potential this track had. Julia Wolf’s part is ... read more

Justin Bieber - SWAG II
70

Justin, you’re doing well brother. Finally, you’ve started to break free.

Out of nowhere, Justin Bieber surprise drops Swag II, and I’d lie if I said I wasn’t excited to listen to this one. The first Swag had a pretty mixed reception. A lot of people weren’t really into it, but honestly, I kind of liked it. It had that Dijon/Mk.gee vibe going on strong, and I dug the switch-up. Was it perfect? Not at all. Was it consistent front to back? Also no. But it felt ... read more

Tame Impala - Loser
80

Man… did Kevin really just pull another trick on us, again?

Had everyone thinking he was moving away a bit from the analogue production, leaning into drum machines and house with End of Summer, and then he drops Loser and it’s back to that classic Tame Impala feel.

I pretty much liked End of Summer personally, but I get why it was divisive. It was such a switch-up, really leaning into that house-inspired, electronic sound. Some people loved it, some weren’t feeling it, and ... read more

Depeche Mode - Black Celebration
85

With Black Celebration Depeche Mode really took synthpop to another level. This is their best record up to this point, and it’s amazing. They really found their sound here and expanded it. Darker, moodier, and more atmospheric, but still very accessible.

The title track already sets the tone and from there it barely lets go. Fly On the Windscreen – Final, A Question of Lust, A Question of Time, Stripped, Here Is the House, New Dress are all fantastic tracks. The album has such a ... read more

Queen - A Kind of Magic
68

After bouncing back with The Works following the pretty mediocre Hot Space, Queen unfortunately take a step down again with A Kind of Magic. For an album with a title like that, you’d expect it to be full of that Queen magic, but honestly, there isn’t a whole lot of magic going on here.

There are still some good moments though. The title track is cool, One Vision is a strong opener, and Who Wants to Live Forever is definitely a highlight. Friends Will Be Friends and Princes of the ... read more

Sabrina Carpenter - Man's Best Friend
52

After the huge success of Short n’ Sweet, which really cemented Sabrina Carpenter as a big pop name, she’s already back with her next album, Man’s Best Friend. And honestly, it kinda feels like the same tricks all over again. Just like with Short n’ Sweet, there’s more focus on gimmicks and attention-grabbing than the actual music. The whole oversexualised angle seems to be what she leans on, and while it clearly works for attention, it doesn't really ... read more

Joey Bada$$ - Lonely At The Top
72

So Joey’s finally back after three years with a new album, and I was looking forward to this one. Joey’s been consistent for over a decade now — 1999, B4.DA.$$, ALL-AMERIKKKAN-BADA$$, 2000 — all really solid projects, some even great. I’ve always liked his style, so going into Lonely At The Top I kinda knew what to expect. And it’s pretty much that: good beats, strong production, sharp bars, smooth delivery, and features that fit in well without overshadowing ... read more

Westside Gunn - HEELS HAVE EYES 2
81

Man… this might be the most I’ve actually enjoyed a Westside Gunn album since HWH 10. Then You Pray For Me was pretty solid, but a bit inconsistent. Still Praying was better, 12 was pretty enjoyable, but the EPs like HWH 11 and the first HEELS HAVE EYES, while containing some cool tracks, didn’t really hit like classic WSG for me.

But with HEELS HAVE EYES 2, I’m actually kind of blown away. I didn’t expect it to be bad or anything, but this exceeded what I ... read more

Prince and The Revolution - Parade (Music From the Motion Picture Under the Cherry Moon)
90

Man, Prince was untouchable during this era. With Parade, he made more than just a soundtrack for the movie, he just made another classic album. Impossible for him to drop a bad record at this point. Every track just hits, and it’s insane how consistent he was back then.

The album kicks off with Christopher Tracy’s Parade, which already sets the tone perfectly, and it follows with amazing tracks like New Position, Under the Cherry Moon, Girls & Boys, Life Can Be So Nice, ... read more

Prince and The Revolution - Around the World in a Day
91

After the incredible 1999 and the magnum opus Purple Rain, Prince didn’t sit still and just came back with Around the World in a Day. And again, he delivered BIG. This album feels very different from Purple Rain though. Where that one was tight, cohesive, and grand, Around the World in a Day is a bit looser, a bit brighter. He leaned more into psychedelia this time, while still keeping that funky and poppy sound we know him for.

The opener Around the World in a Day immediately pulls you ... read more

Queen - The Works
79

After the pretty messy and underwhelming Hot Space, Queen really needed a bounce back, and with The Works they absolutely found their way again. This album feels like a proper return to form, leaning more into that classic Queen sound we all know them for. It’s sharper, more focused, and it really lets their qualities shine.

The album kicks off with Radio Ga Ga, which has to be one of their greatest tracks ever. The atmosphere, the synths, the huge anthem-like chorus: it’s Queen at ... read more

Tears for Fears - The Hurting
83

The debut LP by Tears for Fears, and what a way to start. Right away you hear that distinct Tears for Fears sound: that mix of new wave and synthpop, but with this moody, melancholic feel running through the whole record. It’s emotional, melodic, and just quite beautiful. Curt Smith’s vocals are great, and together with Roland’s songwriting and production it all just clicks perfectly.

The record has some incredible cuts on it. The Hurting sets the tone, Mad World is of course ... read more

Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele 2
72

After years of teasing, Supreme Clientele 2 is finally here. The first one’s a classic, so of course the expectations were high. With Ghostface’s recent run of albums, I wasn’t expecting anything on that level, but being part of the new Mass Appeal Legend series, I did expect something sharper than his latest stuff.

And he really came through. Just like Raekwon a few weeks ago, Ghostface drops a focused project that feels way closer to his prime. The beats are soulful and ... read more

Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues
93

Talking Heads in the late 70s and early 80s were on an insane run. Fear of Music and Remain in Light are straight-up masterpieces, and then they just followed it up with Speaking in Tongues. That’s crazy. By this point they had really locked into their sound, this funky, groovy, slightly weird new wave style that’s instantly recognisable as Talking Heads. And wow, they made it even funkier on this one.

The album kicks off with Burning Down the House and that’s just such a ... read more

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
85

The Wall, Pt. 2.

That’s basically what this is, and honestly I don’t mind at all. It’s Roger Waters’ party again, and by this point it feels way more like a Roger Waters solo album than a full Pink Floyd record. The Wall already leaned that way, but The Final Cut takes it even further, with much less involvement from the rest of the band. Still, if you listen to it as a continuation of The Wall, it works beautifully.

A lot of the material here was originally written ... read more

"@TheNevermeant 100%, he got way too comfortable on this album, it just feels like a bunch of leftovers sticked together rather than something new and creative. And I get what you’re saying about the wider scene too, there’s definitely a lot of hip hop artists that don’t really push boundaries anymore on their latest albums and just stick to what already works because it still sells. I mean, most of their fanbase will still swallow it. Hopefully that trend gets broken through soon, because it will only further devaluate the quality of music (at least in the mainstream)."
