Nigo - I Know NIGO!

high highs and low lows on this thing. from the excellent chemistry between asap and tyler on lost and found to the laughably bad paper plates and functional addict. pharrell's production on this ranges from amazing to trash. other standouts for me were arya, come on let's go, want it bad, remember and punch bowl. decent compilation and cool roster of artists here, i'll keep the best tracks in rotation for a while.

Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth
90

this album (along with The Cold Vein and Fantastic Damage) is a major highlight from the era of early 2000s underground nerd rap. I became a fan of Aesop Rock through some of his more recent releases like The Impossible Kid, but it was very cool to dig back into some of his more experimental early work, the most insane of those being Bazooka Tooth. Aesop sounds like he is on another planet here with some of his most abstract songs ever. the flows he is able to pull off over these unorthodox ... read more

Tha God Fahim & Your Old Droog - Tha Wolf On Wall St. 2: The American Dream

this is a super tight sequel album from droog and fahim, not to mention easily better than the first Wolf on Wall St. tape. throughout the 8 tracks, each MC delivers the quality I've come to expect from them. Tha God Fahim is as solid as ever, but I think Your Old Droog goes above and beyond here. his husky voice sounds great over basically any beat, and his bars are incredibly clever (whoever said I was a plant, yall can see me at the Garden). my favorite aspect of this project, though, is the ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt - SICK!

earl sweatshirt returns with a very satisfying new project. the length does not bother me at all as earl has proven multiple times that short albums are his specialty and he pulls them off quite well. as usual he packs a lot of sweet rhymes and relaxed flows into bite-sized tracks that you just wanna dig into again and again, like with Old Friend and 2010. its worth noting that his delivery is more energetic on SICK! which is amazing to hear. i love the more ambitious spots on this project as ... read more

I've had nearly a year to sit with HARAM and I'm still blown away by certain parts of it every time I go back. this is one of the most enjoyably twisted rap albums to come out in recent years. throughout the last few armand hammer records, billy woods and elucid have proven to be two of the most unique writers in the whole genre. their grim outlooks on society are described in ways that no one else could pull off. I love how they brought the legendary Alchemist into their world for some of the ... read more

The Weeknd - Dawn FM

wow. i thought after hours was a pretty good listen but admittedly I rarely went back to it. this shit is a level up from that album in my personal opinion. the production from start to finish is immaculate, with this being one of The Weeknd's most versatile and dynamic sounding albums in years. the songwriting is consistently memorable too as I feel like gasoline (what an intro), sacrifice, best friends, less than zero, are amazing enough to replay through the rest of this year. also, the ... read more

decided to check out early Grimes music for the first time, and I gotta say this one is enjoyably dreamy. the production shows Grimes in the early, less refined stages of the dark, artsy style that she would go on to blow up with a couple years after this. some songs are more engaging than others as there are parts of this that fall into the background pretty fast, but I found most of this album to be very pretty and smooth to listen to, more so than I expected from such an early point in the ... read more
