Slow and dragging, but definitely emotional and lyrically poignant.
For a Slowcore album, the instrumentals do hit quite a few different places. Lyrically, I'm not sure how much is genuine sentiment and how much is a character. The narrator find themselves wallowing in their own pity, admitting to abuse and mistreatment while still yearning for romance. Is it a nuanced depiction of destructive personality or just Kozelek being a shitty guy? who knows
I still have certain issues with The Alchemists production, but I think this album has some of the more solid beats from him I've heard in a while. Freddie's flow is great and his rhymes are very smooth, but some of these lyrics reveal the very questionable elements of his "enlightened centrist" political character.
Good, but the Madlib collab albums are still much better
Harder on the synthpop elements. Still solid, but not as many standouts as compared to his debut album
Awesome solo R&B project that masters a danceable and psychedelic atmosphere. You maybe wouldn't be able to tell from the album cover, but this thing's really good
Sort an in-between of the various Casablancas projects without completely mastering any of them. There's great tracks, and some sort of monotonous tracks, but the overall outcome is pretty positive. Fun
A nautical journey, almost as dark and brooding as it is hopeful and adventurous. Quad did it again...
A logical evolution in Quadecas music in most every sense. Not only is it instrumentally lush and gorgeous, but Quadeca has become much better at balancing emotion. For as amazing as IDMTHY is, it embraces a very grand and powerful booming sound in the moments of heaviest emotion. While this absolutely works, Vanisher does arguably MORE with pinpoint precision and intention while remaining ... read more
Probably not as technically impressive or varied as Kind of Blue, but this more Bebop style is more reminiscent of what I expected from Jazz going in (not for better or worse)
A lovely bit of dreamy Ambient Pop AND from a group that's FROM MY HOME CITY IN CANADA RAAAAAAH
Emotionally resonant if not quite predictable. Noise Pop is hard to do poorly and this album certainly does it well, but I don't feel it does much of anything new or different to set itself apart
Begins as a fairly clear Rock album, but progresses into increasingly electronic and dance inspired territory. Regardless of influence, manages to feel utterly transcendent throughout
Wow...
A bit of a distracted first listen if I'm being honest but even still, quite the breathtaking experience. Somber and dense and demanding of more of my time
A real suprise announcement and definitely a welcome one. It was made clear from the promotion and the opening lyrics that this wont be a deep or conceptual listen, and it really isn't. What it IS is incredibly fun, dancey, well-produced, and genre-melding.
To be honest, I could have seen this released as mixtape as opposed to a full studio album. Wouldn't have changed the quality of the music, but might have changed how its been received
I think what I respect the most about this album is its authenticity. This album is unapologetic and Jim Legxacy is not afraid to touch a variety of genres and tones. Unfortunately, I just found the album to personally fall flat in a lot of ways. A lot of the sounds didn't strike much of a cord, and some of the lyrics worked better than others.
While not my cup of tea, I still believe it to be a charming and somewhat worthwhile mixtape
Unique and highly forward-thinking R&B. Sudan Archives' creativity shows in every track, making for a twisting and turning experience
Haven't heard ANYTHING like it I mean this is some seriously ahead of its time shit. Jazz Punk.. that's awesome
Not as personally stand-out as the last couple Soda Stereo albums, but a very solid Rock record regardless
Started listening a while ago but it didn't really click with me so I gave it up part way through. After Vylet has several aoty coveted albums, I thought I'd give it another try. While I don't really love it, I can appreciate the sheer passion involved.
The concept is clear, but I wasn't completely following the narrative song to song. The music is wildly genre-bending, but even still the VERY long and frankly somewhat bloated track list still made certain stretches feel ... read more
Despite what the title might suggest, Cibo Matto is failing to fit themselves or their music into ANY stereotypes
Despite having no expectations going in, the range in sounds and influence definitely shocked me to some extent. The album takes from the sounds of 90's Hip Hop and Trip Hop production, but also healthily in Pop and Rock, drawing sounds even from the likes of The Beatles on a song like "Chapter 8 ~Seashore and Horizon~"
