My first thought was "wow this sounds like the Beatles"
It doesn't do anything groundbreaking, but I also found myself having a good bit of fun while listening. It's got a healthy palette of instruments that gives it some life, even if the sound wears thin by the end
Quite a difficult album to really pin down artistically. I think that "ambitious" might be an understatement, as "Everything's Fine" jumps from line to line with so many layers to unravel. The beat selection is incredibly diverse, offering up a grab bag of experimental sounds ranging from heavy samples to jazzy and lo-fi.
The duo obviously was shooting for cinematic, centering the album around a narrative of (I think) the crushing weight of navigating life in the modern ... read more
Serene, carrying a cool concept of a repeating music sequence throughout which I'm probably not classically trained enough to fully understand or something
There is something to Chappell Roan's debut album. It promises energetic, personality filled and catchy dance tracks; which it does... on about a third of the tracks. For a persona so centered around being bold and boundary-pushing, so much of the music sort of feels like filler. I do really think that Roan IS bold and has the potential to make some really fun stuff, because she did.
The writing isn't perfect, but it does manage to shine through in quite a few instances. Her voice is ... read more
tackling this album is a very daunting task. I don't know if I have the skills to properly summarize what a wild, crushing piece of art that Xiu Xiu created. From a musical and lyrical standpoint, this album is quite difficult to get through. The instrumentals are abrasive and piercing; surprisingly only the second most harrowing part of the music.
Like the album art, the writing strips itself bear for all to see. It's intimate, something I've seen in much other music, but blunt and direct in ... read more
definitely captivating from start to finish. The entire time, I was grappling with whether or not this album was actually genius or just trying really hard to be pretentious. It might end up landing somewhere in the middle, but the ride was probably worth it, nonetheless
Despite both being grunge, comparing Pearl Jam and Nirvana almost feels like night and day. I absolutely love the alternative sound Pearl Jam goes for here: blending harder rock with spacey guitars and very unique vocals. I only wish the b-sides were a little more standout as that first half
When making quasi-parody rap music, it can be quite easy to phone it in and give a half-baked purposely bad product. Mista Thug Isolation stands better than a lot of music coming out at this time, a very impressive feat for someone making the transition to rapping. The beats are crazy good, but I really liked a lot of the verses being pumped out too
For Janelle Monae's first project outside of their Cindi Mayweather ArchAndroid sci-fi epic, they made... another sci-fi concept album. This time round,' the album has a much more Hip Hop inspired sound, which gives "Dirty Computer" a unique sound as compared to their earlier works.
This album varies from earlier Janelle Monae in a few ways. It's incredibly horny, bold and unapologetic about it. It handles sexuality in a mature, thoughtful manner; a refreshing scenario in the music ... read more
Completely sapped of any artistic integrity. It sounds flat-out unfinished, mixed like doodoo. Kanye is doing absolutely nothing interesting with his production and especially not with his lyrics. everything about JESUS IS KING screams "bare minimum" from the uninspired , yawn-worthy "alternative" production, to some truly embarrassing lines delivered with absolutely no passion or feeling whatsoever, despite what one would think is a personal passion project for Kanye
eerie, in my mind trying to emulate a modern day interpretation of the "epic" or some other kind of Greek poem with the Abstract Hip Hop formula. A cool concept, with a pretty good execution. It's a very heady project, which I don't think can be adequately digested after just one listen. The lyrics weave together nods to mythology with contemporary struggles, which is a neat concept to run with.
Despite all the praise, I think it's definitely an album that'll shine through for me ... read more
Absolutely phenomenal experimental production, albeit way more subdued and simplistic. Danny will never cease to amaze me with the absolutely insane things that leave his mouth sometimes, but he honestly sells his rapping so well I hardly notice
J. Cole still reigns as the cornball king. 7 Minute Drill sucks dick and balls as a diss; Everyone knows that, but the rest of the mixtape honestly does not fare much better. you're treated to corny line after corny line but that's really what you can expect with J. Cole. lazy Rick and Morty reference, complaints about "cancel culture," and a goddamn MEATCANYON SAMPLE, I mean good LORD. Not to mention the blatant transphobia
I was expecting a sort of generically-palatable Indie Rock album, which maybe shows my lack of familiarity with Vampire Weekend. This newest album from them is full of character and nuance, ending a several year long hiatus with something truly special; What the new MGMT album should have done
Anderson really comes out HARD as a triple-threat artist on here; singing, rapping, and (to my knowledge) somewhat producing. Every song feels like the beginning of a psychedelic new daydream. Just like in a dream, once you've finished you barely even realize that an hour has passed by
Impressive debut album, for sure. St. Vincent has a really nice voice, and wrapped it all up it a soothing, artsy package
I fw this art style of cover heavy. Probably more than the actual music
As off-the-wall-whimsical as 'Merriweather Post Pavilion,' just with a little less polish. Surprisingly, the album actually dipped into some nosier elements at a couple points, which was an interesting direction to take
Somehow, Bjork only creates more and more sophisticated music with every album. It's hard not to sound pretentious as hell when you're talking about music this good, because it really is THAT good. Song after song of killer electronic production, otherworldly vocals, and palpable vibes. It slightly stresses me out that I haven't even listened to what a lot of people consider her best album yet
