いよわ [iyowa] - わたしのヘリテージ [WATASHI NO HERITAGE]
76

Miku was COOKIN' on this one. Hatsune Miku math rock when

Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
81

WHY aren't more people talking about this album? Definitely not as transcendent as the heavy hitters in Radiohead's discography but still a pretty good display of their talent and versatility as artists

Sematary - RAINBOW BRIDGE
66

Spooky vile demon murder cretin Beelzebub killer gore outcast horror demon monster type beat

Kamasi Washington - Fearless Movement
83

Edit: ts kinda goes I changed my mind

Yup, it's jazz. Sounds pretty incredible as far as I'm concerned, but I don't think the praise I have for this album is quite as great as the general consensus. I really like the inclusion of features to add some extra flair on top of the instrumentals, but maybe it's just a bit harder for me to be wowed by free-form jazz as other forms of music

Poppy - I Disagree
75

There's a lot to like about Poppy's Pop/Metal hybrid project: "I Disagree." The poppier (no pun intended) elements worked really well, making for some super catchy songs.

The Metal elements are the aspects of the album I'm still on the fence about. I don't generally like Metal music, but that didn't stop me from appreciating some well-placed moments in this album. Unfortunately, I did feel like the juxtaposition of the Pop and Metal on the same song, while novel, often felt kind of ... read more

Lovage - Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By
65

Contrary to the album title, I don't think this is an album to make love to anyone to. It's got sex in it, for sure, but I can't imagine it works in a practical environment. Having to listen to sex sounds in media is NEVER actually sexy and I stand by that

I think that Lovage has a major problem deciding what their album wants to be. More than anything, it seems to be a beat showcase. Dan the Automator is a pretty good producer, but I guess the vision for the album is this sort of Downtempo ... read more

cLOUDDEAD - cLOUDDEAD
81

Weird. Real weird. I feel like I've been saying this a lot lately but I really have not heard anything quite like cLOUDDEAD's self-titled LP. It's really all over the place, scattered and fragmented across ideas and sounds. I can really only do nothing but respect the artistry that went into crafting such a sprawling work.

Simply calling "cLOUDDEAD" Hip Hop doesn't fully do it justice. They do rap, but the ambient instrumentals take up far more space time-wise and artistically. The ... read more

Moor Mother - The Great Bailout
83

Haunting. One of the most difficult albums to fully stomach and endure. It's challenging in a way much different from other things I've listened to in that it feels more like poetry than a "standard" music album. It is genuinely quite difficult to properly articulate what makes "The Great Bailout" so dread-inducing and historically thought-provoking, so I won't try any further

Nilüfer Yanya - Miss Universe
78

Indie rock that actually doesn't blend into a homogenous sonic soup. Miss Universe does a pretty damn good job of sounding fresh and fun, even if it begins to lose steam towards the very end

underscores - Wallsocket
93

Incredibly unique AND well executed. First and foremost, Wallsocket sounds pretty damn good for the most part. Glitchy, moody pop that varies from ballad to dance anthem. Most songs are built around a sample or some other kind of sonic idea that weaves into the music and the story.

I really only have a basic idea of the story and characters from the Genius song descriptions and a few lyric annotations, but it's still enough to impress me. I love how these coming over age story tropes are ... read more

Mdou Moctar - Funeral for Justice
78

Now I can seem way cooler at parties by telling everyone that I'm tapped into the Nigerian Alt Rock scene

death's dynamic shroud - I'll Try Living Like This
83

FUCK these song titles for making it look like i'm listening to K-Pop

Paris Texas - MID AIR
82

Hit all the notes I wished their earlier mixtape did. Nonstop thrills and exciting performances over killer Rock instrumentals

MARINA - Electra Heart
63

About as subtle as a bag of bricks and definitely shows some signs of age, but I cannot lie and say it didn't have plenty of fun moments.

The girl boss early 2010's equivalent for Twenty One Pilots

Kaizo Slumber - How Are We Feeling Today?
73

Sweet Trip if they slammed back 5 Adderall pills and 3 Jager Bombs each before recording.

I have a headache now

Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms
96

One of the most relaxing, immersive and hypnotic musical experiences I've had and might ever have. It's impossible not to be transported the second that "Chimacum Rain" starts, embarking on a 40 minute trek through the mountains and fields of northern America or something

Dillom - Por cesárea
79

Didn't know what to expect from this album or artist as I have no idea what his description on Spotify says, but I'm glad I checked him out. "Por cesárea" is equal parts Alt Rock and hardcore Alt Hip Hop. The album dips into it's darker vibes, but it's lifted by some sunnier sounding rock songs, too; something that felt far less jarring than it could have been. My one complaint is that the variety left certain aspects of the album unsure of itself, trying to be too many ... read more

Massive Attack - Mezzanine
87

Moody and atmospheric in a very different way than most anything that I've heard before. Every single song paints a vivid picture, existing in a space outside of typical genre conventions

Maruja - Knocknarea
86

Saxophones goin' kinda crazy

Edit: Randomly decided to come back to this over a year later and they're ALL going absolutely CRAZY BONKERS on their respective instruments I mean this shit sounds INSANE

M.I.A. - ΛΛ Λ Y Λ
81

Takes everything good about earlier works and dials it all up. M.I.A.'s experimental third album was insanely ahead of it's time, predating the likes of Death Grips and clipping. Many of the non-conventional approaches to production manage to hit the heights of the other aforementioned groups most experimental, creating a non-stop grab bag of ideas
