Very, VERY 80's. Aside from some truly exceptional exceptions, "Rio" does a whole lot of things good, and nothing extraordinary
After his departure, I had some slight concerns on a post-Isaac BCNR, but this Live Album proves that the band has just as much potential to create some more truly amazing stuff

Green Day might love Sigur Rós
Pusha always had the fundamentals and his last 2 releases (this and Daytona) show that given the right producers, can really shine.
I don't think "It's Almost Dry" is as good as Daytona. The production is still quite good, but no where near as iconic or memorable. Pusha's flow stays good, but the lyrics tend to teeter like a seesaw between good and questionable.
A pretty good rap release, clocking in at a tight runtime
On "Dedicated to Bobby Jameson," Ariel Pink pretty clearly shows off their influences. I hear a LOT of MGMT and Flaming Lips on here, among others. I do think this is unfortunately to the albums detriment.
It tries really hard to be this unique, colourful, weird experience. it IS to some degree, but the album doesn't have a deep sense of identity to it. There's some seriously good songs on here, but on the whole thing feels like an amorphous cloud of synth and filtered vocals ... read more
The trade off between male and female vocals really did a lot to improve the diversity of Sonic Youth's sound. Noise and Post-Punk leanings only furthered the sound of this album into some really quality stuff. I ALMOST feel like it's the album is too long, but I think it just about justifies it's length
NOT a particularly artful album, even if it's considered an influential one. As I have learned the norm is for Chief Keef, his lyrics ain't usually particularly mind-blowing or even really "good." That being said, I'll be damned if every "BANG BANG" didn't put a lil smile on my face and the over-the-top Drill production backed by some seriously energy-filled delivery didn't consistently hit
Almost suffers from doing way too many things and not well enough, but it definitely finds it's footing in the latter half of the album. One minute it's Prog Rock, then it's Metal, then it's Math Rock, now it's Mathematic Prog Metal or something like that. Like I said, it's a lot.
I became quite charmed by it by the end though, even if it was a slow start for me. I don't think the beginning is really "bad" at all. Sure it's playing into the Experimental Metal aspect which I find ... read more
As much a testament to music production and the ingenuity of Hip Hop producers more than it is a functional album.
Every. Single. Sound. Is. A. Sample. Even saying that sounds impressive, but with a concept like that, it's easy for the "gimmicky" aspect to dominate. "Endtroducing......" doesn't fall into that trap. The beats are great, capturing emotion and ambience with ease
Anyone who says "Rock music is dead" doesn't know what they're talking about. twikipedia's newest album is equally moody as it is powerful, skirting the line between Shoegaze and full on Indie Rock. The songs tend to sound slightly similar to one another as the album progresses, but the quality never dips. An incredibly consistent project, albeit not the most memorable
Truly bizarre storytelling handled with far more finesse and nuance than it had any right to. This is my second Kenny Segal-produced album I've heard, but I think his style is one I can definitely appreciate as an Alchemist substitute in the Abstract Hip Hop scene. His beats almost blended into the background I found, as the wacky concept of designer clothes obsession took center stage
Warm, sunny, just slightly tinged with some melancholy. Very much matches the vibe that summers bring.
Porter Robinson knows how to make some EDM, that's for sure. Almost an hour of music flies by, thanks to a commitment to diversity and quality in both production and songwriting
Buckley has some serious songwriting skills, and a great voice to match. "Grace" has a surprising variety of sounds, from a cover of Hallelujah to a song like Eternal Life which almost sounds like a metal song
Supremely charming and infectiously soothing. A very distinctly unique blend of Ambient Electronic with the addition of some Bosa Nova stylings (mostly from the very nice vocals) to give the whole album an original feel
Edit: 89-->80
Edit: I think after the initial shock of the album wore off, I was due for a bit more of a step back and realistic appraisal of how much I actually enjoyed it. I do still think it has a lot to offer, but It's also just... a LOT. I think that I realized how not complex the songs really are. They don't consist of whole lot of moving parts, and get pretty instrumentally repetitive
I think the waveform pattern for this album must just be a solid rectangle. This ... read more
Not only does this double album act as a send-off to one of the most influential 90's Hip Hop acts and one of the greatest Hip Hop groups of all time, but as a tribute to the whole genre, both new and old.
ATCQ brings their classic, timeless Jazz Rap sound, but fittingly updates it following a one and a half decade long hiatus. They absolutely proved that their talent was no relic of the past, delivering one final high note. Every beat is great, every performance (both in house and feature) ... read more
CHIEF KEEF BANGER ALBUM ALERT??? Quite a few examples of kinda dumb lyrics but DAMN did he make some Final Fantasy boss fight themes for beats
It's good. It's real good. Its atmosphere is heavy and its just the right balance of ambience and melody. Despite all this, I wasn't all that floored by it. Compared to some other ambient music I've listened to, it maybe just lacks a bit of identity to me. That doesn't take away value, but it doesn't really contribute any when it comes to my rating
Bedroom Pop if the "bedroom" is a professional recording studio and also they brought an electric guitar in. For someone who doesn't even do music as a career (I wasn't surprised to find out she's a model because she's GORGEOUS), everything about his album really screams quality. The songwriting is pretty basic, but I'll be damned if each song doesn't bring something great to the table
