Really like a lot of the beats and general production on here, and the rapping is the quality you're gonna expect from Doom. The whole theme didn't really click with me, though. I couldn't tell if all the samples about the government and monsters or something were trying to create an overarching story or if they were just for fun, but that isn't going to ruin a whole album for me. You kind of just accept that kinda stuff with Doom at a certain point
such a cool goth-synthwave aesthetic. The almost dancey synth notes and the style of vocals do remind me a bit of Joy Division in all the best ways. Really made me realize the quality of music that was being put out during the 80's when you look outside of the mainstream
the first half of this album is simply undefeated in classic prog-pop
I'm again super conflicted about this Kanye album because some of the songs are just so so good. The more experimental tracks usually work pretty well, but the album suffers from pretty bad bloat towards the middle. Personally I find Kanye's attitude on Famous kinda questionable, but there's like 3 layers of irony involved so who really knows. Despite all these things, TLOP is still pretty good. Shave off a good solid half of the tracks and it'd be great
A cinematic and meticulously crafted album, blending jazz rap, soul, and traditional African sounds. Simz has this killer flow that just glides across the tracks. She just exudes such a level a confidence that could honestly probably sell me on the album even if I didn't like it. Not a single song is a skip, and even the interludes add a level of creativity and depth to the overarching themes of identity and success. Little Simz is the best thing to come out of the U.K. probably ever
Sounds like it should be her first album, not the follow up to one of the best mainstream pop albums I've ever heard. I found that for an album called Solar Power, it felt sort of lifeless and drained of energy. Sad girl music has always been Lorde's forte, but they carried a certain energy and passion behind them. Solar Power has the sad, but lacks anything to really make the songs exciting
GOD is this album dissapointing. This was my first Arcade Fire album, and I liked it enough at the time. It wasn't until after I listened to the rest of Arcade Fire's discography and returning to this album that I realized how done absolutely DIRTY I was. There's some pop charm to a couple songs, and I still really like Creature Comfort, but that more pop-oriented sound has little to no real care or thought put into it. Just pales in comparison to albums like Funeral or Suburbs
Pop done so well. It's polished and catchy in a way I wish more music would replicate
Experimental and well-constructed, with some cool jazz elements mixed with trippy backings and vocals. The lyrics tend to fall off a bit as the project went on, but still a refreshing listen
Feel kinda guilty giving a lukewarm review to one single person's solo project they probably worked super hard on... but it's just aight (I am not transphobic)
quintessential indie-rock. Like the poster boy mascot of modern Indie rock. I think The Strokes and Julian Casablancas have some more inventive stuff out there, but this album set a pretty high precedent going forward, and that's pretty worthy of commendation
The fall off. Got some fun songs on it (which says a lot about the quality of Gorillaz that their worst standard album still has quality songs), but something just feels sort of empty about the whole thing which really makes it so unmemorable to me. I don't even think The Fall would feel nearly as disappointing if it didn't have to follow the absolute TITANIC bangers of Demon Days and Plastic Beach
Apparently it captures the feel of going to a small live show so maybe I'd connect with this album more if I actually went outside more often
Going back to this again after "Whole Lotta Red" has made me appreciate it a bit more, as it's better in a lot of ways. Features are waaaaay better, the vibes are higher, and the lyrics.... well the lyrics are about the same
Very impressive how each song was able to sound SO different from the next. A violin ballad one song transitions to eastern-style string instruments to some electric guitar, strung together with some psychedelia. It isn't the greatest album of all time to me, but very, very good
I liked it. I don't really have any major complaints. I maybe found it a tiny bit... underwhelming, if anything? I think it's deserving of most praise it receives, and I hope Boygenius keeps releasing material. I'm not sure if it's for me, though
Edit: 65-->85-->95
I was pretty wrong about this album when I first heard it. I initially wasn't a huge fan, but the pieces sort of fell into place for me. The creativity really shows on here, and most songs feel like they have something to offer. The weird vocal effects and electronic instruments work in a way they probably shouldn't. I wouldn't be surprised if my score goes up some more after another listen or two
Edit: It's so gooooood. The songs are so ... read more
I was really enjoing this album, and then it kept going, and I realized I had to listen to the same song for 30 more minutes. Each individual song actually sounds pretty nice, which doesn't seem to be a common opinion in these reviews, but they just aren't reeealllly special enough to support a whole album
