Madonna - Erotica
55

Tori Amos - Shush
60

I can see why people consider this to be her best single in ages (which doesn't say much). The politically charged lyrics are provocative and defiant, something you can actually take seriously, though I'm not entirely convinced by that "Live through this, thanks Courtney" line; I think she could have pulled it better.

The song itself is fine but extremely redundant, albeit more alive than the inert, aseptic "Stronger Together". The strong industrial percussion ... read more

Janet Jackson - I Want You
80

Her best post-classic era single along with Rock With U. Everything here sounds heavenly: the sampled strings, the drums full of life, and evidently, Janet’s voice. It’s so full of passion not to mention it’s one of her best performances. The lyrics are also great (her last to be) they sound so full of emotion and longing, specially since it’s a female point of view, which in these type of ballads is unusual.

8/10

Tori Amos - Stronger Together
50

It’s a known fact that Tori has had lost that spark in her long ago (26 years ago precisely) and, therefore, released very mid-average at best material, just like this song. Her strengths, the piano and lyrics, are set aside in favor of flat electronic beats, uninspired walls of sound and unflattering lyrics. The songwriting is extremely weak, I can’t help but picture your typical liberal feminist / vague left leaning tweet. Political messages that are so on your face that ... read more

FKA twigs - Cheap Hotel
60

I like the darker and sultry production this has. It doesn’t feels like a song, the sample and upbeat intro quickly dissolve into a song without a clear verse and chorus. It sounds urban but not in the way Caprisongs does. Im not totallly convinced by the awful chipmunk vocal effect.

Maruja - Pain to Power
70

Maruja finally evolved into the full embodiment of angsty post rock they were supposed to be. I previously complained that the band seemed to have an evident sonical stagnation, all their songs including the same harsh, repetitive sax notes and noise guitars, but when the full body arrived, it proved different.. Bloodsport moves into energetic noise rock, is fun and memorable, the overly corny scream-singing ghostly in the mix, innofensive. Look Down on Us was better on the album, just as Break ... read more

FKA twigs - Perfectly
60

Twigs can be a dance diva whenever she wants, this is proof of that. It is upbeat, catchy, simple, the actual dance music Eusexua lacked, but also at the same time is a bit bland. The drums are there without adding any substance to the melody, the vocal melodies on the chorus are nice but not hooky enough for a pop song, the outro lacked the harshness of ebm/industrial music. Nice pop single, but thats it.

Lorde - Virgin
40

For an album THAT revelatory, it lacks character and strenght. Lorde brings her most mature side, the teenage yearning is finally gone, and instead we have introspective aspects like gender identity, EDs, sex, etc. While most of the time is trying to be deep and introspective, the boring songwriting does nothing to get the listener to fully engage in the concept of each song. Sonically, it takes the minimalistc, sparse backgrounds of PH and the euphoric electronic crescendos of Melodrama. From ... read more

black midi - Schlagenheim
70

Music circle jerks might have turned this into the face of modern hipster garbage, but is not the case at all. Im not fond of Geordie’s vocals, that eccentric theatrical style can be fatiguing at times. Their influences, too, are still too evident to be a remarkably groundbreaking record. Despite those flaws, Schlagenheim is an enjoyable, noisy album that works well the raw guitar sound and art influence, as well as the most atmospheric post rock undertones.

Lorde - Hammer
50

Another rushed breakdown and dull climax section, though the upbeat club production makes it more remarkable than its equally mediocre predecessors.

Maruja - Look Down On Us
60

Alright, I don't like to say it but this band is becoming in a sort of one trick pony. The repetitive sax notes (which sound exactly as the ones on Break the Tension), the cheesy rapping that proves lyrcism is not one of the frontman's strenghts and the silent to loud crescendo shows no progression or change from their previous music. Considering that Break the Tension also suffers from the same problems makes me have a divisive opinion on what their debut album is gonna be.

Jerskin Fendrix - Jerskin Fendrix Freestyle

Wheter or not an april fools joke, Jerksin Fendrix Freestyle is surprisingly good. The saturated brass section and boastful lyrics are at the same time original and derivative, which I like.

Lorde - What Was That
40

Bland alt-pop artist returns with a surprisingly bland song. I never thought of Lorde as the pop genius savior people made her out to be, and this song in particular doesn't help. WWT returns to a safer terrirory after the artistic and commercial failure Solar Power was, and whether it was an artistic decission or mere damage control, this song is just not interesting at all. Her lyrical content ranges from cringe to tedious, isn't she tired of singing about breakups and teenage ... read more

The Dare - What's Wrong With New York?
10

I remember when I first stumbled across The Dare. Girls came on shuffle, I didn’t think it was particularly great or had much personality, nevertheless, I kinda liked it. Now, that sarcastic carefree energy makes him look like a total cornball. WWWNY is a pastiche of the shittiest ‘indie sleaze’ trends, a shameless lcd soundsystem with no personality, outside of being ‘dumb and carefree’. His trick of being a lcd soundsystem copycat and pandering to charli xcx fans ... read more

Scott Walker - Scott 2
70

From the quadrology of the Scott albums, I find this one to be the weakest. Sure, his voice is as stunning as usual, there is the performance on Jackie, The Bridge and BOBW, but nothing varies too much from the crooner tone his debut had. The walls of sound, beautiful romantic covers and many Brel covers are still here, but I dont see much progression, variation or somthing out of the mold going on, the romantic ballads are more sappy and melodramtic, the boastful songs which are some of his ... read more

Scott Walker - Scott
70

In late 1967, walking away from his succesful band, Scott released the first instance of the so called Scott quadrilogy. His stunning voice is accompained by traditional pop strings and many covers, which some are great (My Death, Mathilde) and some are forgettable filler tracks (You're Gonna Hear From Me). Scott shows his evolution as an artist, he is not a 1960's teen idol anymore. The Sinatra/Brel-isms are present, and while he handles them well, there are some times when it just ... read more

The Orchestra (For Now) - Plan 75
65

Is a good project with creative ideas condensed perfectly into a short length? yes. Is it derivative from trends of the windmill scene? also yes. The Orchestra (For Now) from its name tells you is aligned to the stereotypes of every windmill band, in fact this album works with a formula of mixing loud punk inspired sections with soft baroque ones, and in top sarcastic conscious lyrics. But in spite of falling into the molds of bands such as Black Country New Road (even the vocalist kind of ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
60

I couldn't care less about the gender of the singer, not that Isaac was a decent vocalist to begin with. BCNR reinvents itself departing from their previous challenging rock sound to a mellow folk sound, still retaining their typical idiosyncrasy. Besties is not the best start. A lazy opener in which the monotonous vocal delivery, innocent poppy guitars and sarcastic post-modern lyrics don't do much. A problem that will continue through is present since the first tracks. Most of the ... read more

Janet Jackson - Control
60

Control was the manifesto of a young Janet Jackson setting herself free from her family's shadow, her father dominace, a failed marriage and hunger for fame and empowerement. Dance numbers that go from female empowerement, sexual boundaries, breakups and teenage experiences the album always is entertining and varieted enough to keep the interest in, even if most songs get too repetitive after a while. The production is very 80s sounding, something that adds personality to the album, but ... read more
