Pinegrove - 11:11

Moody Indie Rock which for me works best as a single sitting listen.
The album starts off extremely strong with Habitat and Alaska and even though after that I don't really find the other tracks to be that special or outstanding, they still didn't appear to be repetitive or monotone. The album doesn't drag on so that it has a negative impact on the overall listening experience.
Very solid songwriting and the vocal performance just perfectly fits the vibe this album generates.
Great listen!

As a huge fan of the 80s, it’s no surprise that I like this Album so much.
The instrumentals are splendidly produced, her vocals and the mix blend perfectly into the sound landscape, and the catchy choruses and subject matters greatly add to the overall feel of this record. The latter middle part tracks, Obnoxiously Talented through Take me to your Leader, seem to take out some momentum of the Album in my opinion, but it’s quickly picked up by the last two songs again.
To me, this ... read more

I really like the melodic sections of the album, especially the 4 track run from Parallel Lines to Safer Here - what a great streak of songs. Unfortunately the latter part of the records feels too repetitive and similar and doesn't really connects with the great ideas of the middle part.
Overall still a really enjoyable record.

Earl Sweatshirt - SICK!

It's good, but for me personally it's also lacking something that I got used to with his former material. The production overall is great, jazzy, experimental and, especially on Tabula Rasa, really hits my spot. His rapping remains to be one of the most unique in current Hip-Hop, but it's not as outstanding anymore as it used to be 10 years ago.
Still, by no means a bad album, in fact still fairly above average, but for some reason I expected something more.

FKA twigs - CAPRISONGS

Looking at the spotify plays of this album (as of 01/15/22) it's evident, that the Weeknd feature seems to carry the record, with over 15 mil plays compared to the rest of the songs with most under 10k. Which is absolutely misleading and a shame, since most of her material here is really good. The opener ride the dragon, with stellar production and great vocal performance as well as heartfelt darjeeling. There is absolutely no need for Twigs to rely on getting carried by Abel (although the ... read more

Awesome homages to great classics.
Amazing how Chan twists these songs into her very own versions and how she creates these completely different and distinct moods with them.
Standout tracks are definitely Bob Seger's Against The Wind and Jackson Browne's These Days - just immaculate covers.

thanks for coming - Rachel Jr.

A really interesting record.
It's very minimal in its music, and that gives it a very distinct feel and mood. Rachel's vocals are very well fitting and the lyrics also help to paint this atmosphere. However at some parts I wish there was more to it, more depth, more textures as some songs leave behind a bland feeling. My favorite track is To Become Immortal -- and Then Die with a smooth bass line, light hearted vibe and beautiful singing.

Gunna - DS4EVER

Too long, too similar, too bland.
I kinda had some expectations after I heard the intro and especially the second track pushin p - not a banger in the most traditional sense but still somewhat interesting sonically. After that, though, it went downhill for me. Too many samey sounding tracks make up the most part of this bloated release. With the occasional glimpse of some nice low-pitched soul sample beats, the production, features and vocal deliveries just sound too similar and sluggish for me ... read more

Wide variety of sounds with beautiful vocal delivery.
It's a very diverse record with lots of directions and ideas, which might not necessarily be its biggest strength, but it makes for an interesting listen. The opener Keep Your Head Up is definitely the most heartfelt song I've heard so far this year, and it is clearly my highlight of the album. Young is also really high up there with its contagious energy and really amazing chorus.
Really enjoyable album with some standout tracks of the year ... read more

The Weeknd - Dawn FM

The Weeknd sticks to what he's been perfecting over the last few years.
The Neo 80s sound seems to be synonymous with Abel nowadays and in my opinion there's nobody who's doing it better at the moment and with this type of production and his vocals, the long overdue (and controversial, I know...) MJ comparisons become more and more evident at this point.
The album's concept, being a radio station, plays out really well over the course of the LP. The few features were placed in a well manner, ... read more

It's mysterious, it's mellow, it's dawning.
Really love the sample usage here, especially on the first half opening track Strange Neighborhood and throughout Shadow Paradise. However the record does seem to lose my attention at points and I know that can happen fairly quickly with ambient music if you don't pay close attention while listening, which I did. Still I found it to be a little bleak at times.
Still a lovely listen though with some really interesting textures.

Imitation Zone - Late

A really nice post-grunge album that clearly and blatantly shows where it takes its inspiration from.
The singer's vocal delivery is obviously reminiscent of the late Kurt Cobain, even though at parts the singing itself can see some more practice and improvement, as it can get a bit off-key at times. Instrumentally, the album gets pretty classic in terms of a grungy feel. One of my highlights is the slower and mellower Keep Talking, with great vocal additions from Mahjong.
Overall, a fairly ... read more

YELL - Son of the Bitch EP

It's always interesting to see where music can be taken to. In this case it was taken to a 54 second long 4 track EP.
At first listen I thought to only have stumbled upon a sort of "trailer" for the record. But nope, it was the whole deal. 4 short screams make out the entirety of the EP.
Simply because of this initial surprise, I have to give this record some credit.
All together it didn't really evoke anything else in me. If it was longer I might have been able to see some effort ... read more

Vestbo Trio - Reflector

Lovely and dreamy melodies that evoke feelings of lonelyness and inner contemplation. I also think that the purely instrumental tracks have more of an appeal than the ones with Bjørns vocals. His voice , the lyrics and the delivery themselves are fine but when you compare the insrtumental and the tracks with vocals you can't shake of the feeling that the singing sonehow "waters down" the overall listening experience.

Dean Hamilton - Limina

Very strong Post-Rock offering in the form of one seamless cut/stream of music which makes it feel like one cohesive story. Amazing progression, melodic and melancholic compositions, and great ideas. Also loved the sporadic use of vocal samples that were placed in a very good pace.
Absolute highlight for me has to be the title track Limina with an amazing build up, powerful guitars and drums and a grand, almost destructive finale.
Waking, with its heartfelt acoustic elements, is also a ... read more

Daniel Bachman - Lonesome Weary Blues

Some fine guitar playing. The mix and master nicely underlines the raw nature of the music. The melancholic refrain on Rappahannock River Rag is my highlight of this album.

ARANANAR - Kosti

Interesting mix of spoken word and singing with an almost haunting feel to it. Unfortunately I cannot assess the lyrical content as I don't speak Czech. Overall a fairly enjoyable listen.

Zox The Fox - Kidney Disaster

Clearly some sort of fun/satire/intentional low effort album. The final track gave me at least some musical deliverance, but overall this album doesn't even qualify as "so bad that it's kinda enjoyable" kind of music.

Dangaus Čiabuvis - Aerodronas

Makes you feel like hopping from one airport to another. Overall lovely drone sounds, that can seem a tad bit too monotonous at times.
