Deerhunter - Cryptograms
88

This is some of Deerhunter's most experimental stuff here, relying less on hooks and more on repetition and effects. While the ambient moments aren't the best, the back end of this record is absolutely fantastic, and is still some of Deerhunter's best work.

Fav Tracks: Spring Hall Convert, Strange Lights, Cryptograms, Hazel St., Heatherwood

Animal Collective - Hollinndagain
59

I love I See You Pan and Pride and Fight, but the rest of the album doesn't really feel as exciting as the beginning (albeit, Forest Gospel is pretty insane). I think if you enjoy Here Comes the Indian, at least give this one a shot; it's like that record but even more out there and wild.

The Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic
70

A little too pop punk for my taste, but there's some fantastic playing throughout this record and not to mention some super earwormy hooks.

Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial
89

I bought myself a vinyl copy of this record after only mildly enjoying it and it's really grown on me, because the personality Will Toledo brings on every track is too great to deny. I still think the instrumentals sort of sound like your middle of the road indie rock affair, but my god can this guy every write some great fucking lyrics.

Original Score: 73/100

Ty Segall Band - Slaughterhouse
88

My god, this record rocks so fucking hard.

Fav Tracks: Death, I Bought My Eyes, Slaughterhouse, Tell Me What's Inside Your Heart, Muscle Man, Diddy Wah Diddy

Ty Segall - Emotional Mugger
85

'Emotional Mugger' is a fun but sorta fucked up and weird lo-fi garage rock record that I can't get enough of. Segall puts together some of his most memorable vocal performances on any record he's ever done, and simultaneously greats some of his most hard hitting and truly music with tracks like 'Diversion', 'Big Baby Man', and 'Candy Sam'. Bravo, Mr. Segall. Bravo.

Fav Tracks: Emotional Mugger / Leopard Priestess, Squealer, Big Baby Man, Candy Sam, Diversion

Ought - Sun Coming Down
92

With 'Sun Coming Down', Ought prove they will be one of the most memorable acts in the years to come. Tim Darcy's vocals, while certainly not for everyone, are nothing short of unique. Not to mention, they're paired with some of the most enjoyable and straight forward lyrics on any record, art punk or not, in the past decade. Tracks like 'Men for Miles' and 'The Combo' are punchy post punk riots, while 'Beautiful Blue Sky' will most likely go down as one of the great tracks of this decade. It's ... read more

Panda Bear - Person Pitch
100

Easily one of the best psychodelic pop records to ever be released. Unforgettable hooks and trippy soundscapes make for one of the most perfectly crafted records of the 2000's. While slightly underwhelming for some people, it's undeniable how important Person Pitch has been for underground music since its release. A masterpiece in the truest sense of the word.

Radiohead - Kid A
100

What are you doing? Stop reading this review and go listen to Kid A, ya silly goose.

Whitney - Light Upon The Lake
57

Ya know, I think I would enjoy this record so much more if the singer just didn't use that weird falsetto. It annoys the hell out of me for some reason.

The Music Tapes - Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes
90

An album that is both calming and gives you the feeling you got after opening your presents on Christmas morning as a kid. It's truly a magical experience. If you've ever wanted to hear a man with the soul of a child play songs about reindeer, tornados, and ice palaces recorded on extremely dated technology dating as far back as the early 1900s (and I mean, who hasn't?), give this a go.

Fav Tracks: Song for Oceans Falling, Freeing Song by Reindeer, Freeing Song for Reindeer, In an Ice Palace, ... read more

The Microphones - It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water
77

This thing starts off great, but gets pretty boring towards the back end.

The Microphones - Mount Eerie
100

I believe Phil releasing the Glow pt. 2 and this record back to back is enough proof that he's one of this generation's brightest songsmiths. While the Glow pt. 2 is more diverse with sounds, Mount Eerie has a much more focused and overwhelming feeling to it that requires multiple listens to fully grasp. There's so many different layers to peel away from this record; the story, the instrumentation, the effects. If the only Phil Elvrum record you've ever listened to is the Glow pt. 2, I implore ... read more

Pavement - Wowee Zowee
87

A much more well rounded record than Crooked Rain. The songwriting from Malkmus is as sharp as ever with iconic songs like 'Grounded' and 'At&T'.

Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
80

A great effort from Pavement, but overall it's not nearly as special or a record as Slanted and Enchanted.

Fav Tracks: Silent Kit, Elevate Me Later, Gold Soundz, Cut Your Hair

Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
85

It's a record that I found to be deeply impacting my first few listens but more recently has lost a little bit of its edge. It's just not Radiohead's most impressive or memorable work, but that doesn't mean it's not solid as hell. If you want to listen to a record that's just slow, subdued, and somber, give this a spin.

Women - Public Strain
98

With Public Strain, Women hit just about every musical need I could want on a rock record; wigged out experimental rock, noise rock, dark indie rock, 60's flavored pop gone sour, and more. How could I not fall in love with this thing? The entire record from start to finish is completely captivating; there's not a single weak spot on here. I just hope one day it gets the acclaim it deserves and we'll all look back at Women as one of the great indie rock bands of all time.

Conor Oberst - Ruminations
84

I'm actually surprised how much I love this. Maybe I'm just a sucker for stripped down folk music, but Conor backs that up with some of his best songwriting in years.

Fav Tracks: Tachycardia, Barbary Coast, Gossamer Thin, Next to Kin, The Rain Follows the Plow, You All Loved Him Once

William Basinski - Nocturnes
66

Trail of Tears is fantastic, but I get bored with the title track rather quickly on this one. Check it out if your only exposure to Basinski is the Disintegration Loops.

Madvillain - Madvillainy
99

Just… listen to it.

Fav Tracks: Accordian, Money Folder, Rhinestone Cowboy, Great Day, Fancy Clown, Meat Grinder, Raid, Curls
