Soft ambience. It is dreamy and peaceful. There is something lovely about how atmosphere it sounds. I loved closing my eyes to this and being transported. I felt like I was in an isolated park on a grey day, just being. There's a hopeful and subtle tension that keeps this so engaging - the misty suspended sound over the cautious but persistent guitar motif on 'Don't Be Too Hard On Yourself'. I particularly enjoyed 'Sapphire Waters' and 'Don't Be Too Hard On Yourself'.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - The Silver Cord
NR

The most 'Beep-Boop-y' Gizz album so far. The transitions are fun. It is a very driving album with it's persistent beats. The synthetic sound is a nice stylistic choice and makes for a buzzy and bright backdrop. It was cool how varied the vocal styles were, from their throaty metal sound, to their sweet light melodic sound, to energetic rapping. Another fun Gizz album! I particularly enjoyed 'Gilgamesh'.

I found the extended version more interesting. The grooves and transition had more ... read more

Love Of The Brave - Love Of The Brave
NR

Sunshine filled bittersweetness. 'Love Of The Brave' is a gentle, warm, and comforting psychedelic folk album. The jazzy elements were magical and satisfying - 'Heron'. It has a great magical quality with it's mixture of sunshine guitars, groovy and hypnotic bass guitar, and ancient folk songs melodies. I love how grounded this release sounds - bookends of 'Find My Way' - it adds a sense of calm whilst listening. I particularly enjoyed 'The Untold Story Of The Love Of The Brave', 'Le Champ De ... read more

James Blake - Playing Robots Into Heaven (Endel Chillout Soundscape)
NR

Aptly titled a 'Chillout Soundscape', these remixes are softened, deep and relaxing. I like how well paced this release is, patiently finding its way towards a calmer place. This is achieved through its warm, rich and muffled production.

Actress - LXXXVIII
NR

This grey and sparing electronic album is enjoyably stripped back. This makes for clean groves and spacious atmospheres. I liked the metallic sounds sprinkled throughout the album as they brought a cold quality into the project. Each song has an interesting, unique, and understated sound palette. I particularly enjoyed 'Memory Haze ( c 1 )' and 'M2 ( f 8 )'.

Four Tet - Live at Alexandra Palace London, 24th May 2023
NR

A lovely and patient set from Four Tet. I love the more ambient feel of this set, it's so beautiful! Track wise and groove wise, it's most similar to the 2019 set released under 4TLR. This release's softness and longer moments between tracks is soothing, mesmerising, and cathartic. Serene, magical, and peaceful electronic music. I just love their music so much. They are an outstanding DJ. I love listening to Four Tet DJ sets, he doesn't miss. I can't wait to come back to this set.

Jockstrap & Taylor Skye - I<3UQTINVU
NR

This remix release brings a lot of hype energy to the amazing songs from 'I Love You Jennifer B'. It's more 'dance-y' ('Good Girl') and a lot choppier ('I Touch'). The bands electronic and experimental elements are put front and centre in this sense. Making for unpredictable and fresh sounding remixes distinct from their original tracks. It's a fun listen that feels very live. Basically 'I Love You Jennifer B's' Hype-man. I particularly enjoyed 'Good Girl', 'Pain Is Real', 'Red Eye', and 'I ... read more

Sam Gendel - AUDIOBOOK
NR

Soft, cautious, and wobbly jazz, with Sam Gendel's distinct alien soundscape. It sounds odd and curious - this is emphasised by its experimentation in instruments (using water sounds on 'QR'). I particularly enjoyed 'CD', 'KL', 'QR', 'UV', and 'YZ'.

G Jones - PATHS
NR

Bitty and choppy techno with trap elements. It had enjoyably loud and unique grooves - 'Which Way'. I loved how beautiful the baseline ambience was because it contrasted with the blaring and fast paced noisy stylings. It is an enjoyably overwhelming listen. It picked it's quieter moments really well, helping the project's pacing. I particularly enjoyed 'Familiar Frontiers', 'Which Way', 'Perpetual Bloom', 'Liminality', 'Maybe', 'Dancing On the Edge', and 'Remnant'.

Louie Zong - Hurricane Louie
NR

Zippy and bouncy cartoony music. It sounds like menu music for an awesome game. It has a lazy seaside vibe to it due to it's bobbing and wavy melodies - e.g. 'Rain On The Way'. It is bright and sweet. I particularly enjoyed 'Crab Samba', 'Rain On The Way', and 'Planktonic'.

Animal Collective - Isn't It Now?
NR

Twiddly happy sunshine. It is light and carefree, walking around before settling and morphing into new groves. This warmth is inviting, calming, and doesn't take itself too seriously (e.g. percussion in 'Genie's Open', keyboard tone and motif in 'Broke Zodiac'). This made me think of the Grateful Dead. I thought that the group vocals and harmonies added a lot of playfulness making listening lots of fun. The longer track lengths emphasise how this is one of the looser sounding releases from ... read more

Laurel Halo - Atlas
NR

Cautious, dissonant, and beautiful layers of ambience. I love the way this album bends and strains the more melodic phrases in and out of focus. The tension this push and pull gives makes the album incredibly engaging. It has a melancholic atmosphere. The piano and strings are gentle and rich. Everything seems hidden away in these muffling layers of ambience for you to discover. And the sounds on here are just gorgeous!

NR

Loud, colourful and in your face electropop. It is very fancy due to it's thumping beats. It sounds so much larger than life. This is emphasised by anthemic choruses. It sounds so poppy and catchy ('Miss Belladonna'). A huge party.

Tinashe - BB/ANG3L
NR

Cool, clear, and smooth R&B. It has very well balanced production that effectively frames their light voice with addictively clicky beats. Since everything is so light, the music seems like fluttering wings. This is propelled by the fun beats that occasionally dip into UK Garage patterns. All of this is built on a foundation of minimal but solid bass. I particularly enjoyed 'Talk To Me Nice'.

Slowdive - everything is alive
NR

Slowdive's dreamy watercolour shoegaze is as emotive and picturesque as ever. This release has a lovely mellow vibe to it - emphasising the hypnotic qualities of the genre. I loved the soft yet clear singing, it has so much patience and warmth - making it soothing to listen to. I also loved the blend of light electronics with washed out guitar waves. Everything feels smoothed over and very nice. I particularly enjoyed 'shanty' and 'skin in the game'.

Cécile McLorin Salvant - Mélusine
NR

Stunning fluid and varied vocal jazz. It feels very modern due to it's well varied instrumental palette. This means it can branch out into fun and interesting styles (Just voice and drums, quirky electronics, etc.). I love the smoothness of the album. This is emphasised by the singer's soft and emotional voice. The album is very good at setting a chilled out mood. I particularly enjoyed 'La route enchantée' and 'Petite musique terrienne'.

Paavoharju - Yön mustia kukkia
NR

This music washes over you. It's the sound of well loved antiques and matchboxes, shuffling around, creating texture. Loads of small sounds making a formless collage. Each item with it's own story. The songs have an air of mystery to them as they are very loosely held together (e.g. strings in 'Haihtuu') This is partly because of their lofi recording aesthetic. Everything melts into itself. I keep getting lost in the album, and I feel it is a very good full listening experience because of this. ... read more

James Blake - Playing Robots into Heaven
NR

James Blake's sleepy rave release is full of deep nocturnal and interesting grooves - and it sounds gorgeous. It is more electronically focussed and has a very grey aesthetic. His vocal manipulations make for unique and catchy grooves that complements his beautiful, soft, and emotional vocal tone ('I Want You To Know'). Listening to this is very comforting and addicting. His expert production ensures the music stays on it's front foot without crowing the more vulnerable and open moments of ... read more

Lindstrøm - Everyone Else Is a Stranger
NR

I love the light and retro aesthetic. It gives it a bright and upbeat feeling. The electronics are dotted around and sound happy. All of these elements combine for a very hypnotic listen where it is very easy to get lost in the music.

Bullant - Late Life Circ
NR

Gizz beep boops. This has a wonderful dark, deep, and varied sound. Swinging between future garage and techno. The grooves seem very natural and the tracks have satisfying builds - 'Like It's Not Fun'. As made apparent by the track lengths, everything is given space to develop, and as a result the music feels very uncrowded. I particularly enjoyed 'Like It’s Not Fun', 'Perfect Shelving Technique', 'Clown from Two Towns Over', 'Modern Colonic', and 'I Miss Tony B'.
