EABS Meets Jaubi - In Search of a Better Tomorrow
NR

I loved Jaubi's last project, and I love this one! It has a wonderful richness to it's jazz fusion due to the unique genre blend of western jazz, Arabic scales and instrumentation, and occasional electronics. It has a familiar smoothness and warmth. What makes this album so awesome is the perfectly balanced tones achieved in each and every instrument (particularly the Sarangi - it sounds so emotional and velvety). I enjoyed the spiritual jazz crescendos and felt they contrasted expertly with ... read more

Colter Wall - Little Songs
NR

Wonderful cowboy tunes! The country music is warm and welcoming and the rough voice is soothing and adds to the aesthetic. Everything is concise but never rushed. I love the use of the violin in the album, it added great variation to the mini solos. Lovely stuff. I particularly enjoyed 'Prairie Evening/Sagebrush Waltz', 'Corralling the Blues', and 'For A Long While'.

Divide and Dissolve - Systemic
NR

I really like their drone metal sound! It's dark, encompassing and grim. This aesthetic brings a great heaviness to it - distorted guitar. I liked the slowness of the music and the saxophone adds a richness to the music that adds to it's menace and brings an engaging and unique quality to their sound. This s powerful, concentrated music. I particularly enjoyed 'Blood Quantum', 'Indignation', and 'Desire'.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation
NR

King Gizzard's got a new metal album! I love the mix of thrash and prog metal, it's like speeding down a twisty road. There's always a place for the music to go. The album adds to this by keeping up the pace with clean track transitions. The scribbly shredding guitars are energising and driven by perfectly placed drums. The throaty vocals make for fun and memorable hooks - 'Converge'. Overall a well balanced and exciting album that makes me want to see them live even more.

Daniel Pemberton - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Original Score)
NR

A very good soundtrack! It is appropriately epic and large-scale. It emphasises this by drawing from and meshing so many styles and genres together (hip-hop, rock, punk, Indian music, electronic, and modern classical). This is very satisfying as it constantly re-contextualises motifs as you hear all the character's themes working together. It makes the album sound like a collision point of all the different realities in the movie. It just sounds so cool and futuristic. The builds are very ... read more

Sissoko Segal Parisien Peirani - Les Égarés
NR

This album creates a magical atmosphere. The way the four instruments play together makes for a satisfying and contrasting listen packed with lush and rich melodies. I feel like I'm in the album artwork! A dense, mossy, and light filled forest where you explore the wood's floor - playing around the trees like how the instruments find joy and wonder in playing around each other (e.g. the accordion on 'Ta Nyé' with the later introduced saxophone following in it's footsteps).

Rhiannon Giddens - You're the One
NR

Chilled out grassy field festival tunes from a legend. Her voice is stunning, and I loved the very American-folk sounding instrumentation. The banjo adds a lot of character! (Also 'Another Wasted Life' has got to be a bond theme!) I particularly enjoyed 'You're The One' and 'Who Are You Dreaming Of'.

Sílvia Pérez Cruz - Toda La Vida, Un Día
NR

A folky singer-songwriter album packed with pretty sounds. It is intimate, delicate and has rich instrumental flourishes with an interesting use of really 'bass-y' sounds. This contrast of sounds makes for a mysterious atmosphere and had me listening with baited breath. There were some moments of quiet wonder sprinkled throughout the album. Lovely stuff. I particularly enjoyed 'Aterrados', 'Ayuda (Martín)', 'El teu nom', and 'Món'.

tripleS - ↀ [MUHAN]
NR

This Kpop release has a forward thinking futuristic pop sound with fast paced sweet, buzzy, and pitch shifted sounds ('Complexity'). This gives the project an addictive feeling. I love how it juggles intimate and 'headphoney' themes with attention grabbing instruments (e.g. snappy guitars on 'Cry Baby'). This gives the music an enjoyable contrast. I particularly enjoyed 'Girl's Capitalism', 'Seoul Sonyo Sound', and 'Number 8'

Panda Bear & Sonic Boom - Reset in Dub
NR

This remix album of an incredible LP highlights the bounciness and joy of the original album. It extends the springy and colourful repetitive instrumentals to lighten the music and give more breathing room. It feels like the music is melting as it gently strays from it's original bouncy grooves. Each track finds something new to explore in the original recording ('Danger Dub'). The added horns, effects and rhythms makes 'Reset in Dub' a very addictive, warm, and summery listen. I particularly ... read more

Chamber - A Love To Kill For
NR

This metal release has little to no breathing room between tracks, highlighting how this album is a full-on listen. This spiny and spitting project has a chaotic mixture of detours from it's core sound. I enjoyed how these broke up the music (e.g. the quieter dark and ominous section in 'At My hands' peeking through only to be overshadowed by acidic vocals). It flies by as your ears try to keep up with everything being thrown at you. I particularly enjoyed 'Retribution', 'At My Hands', ... read more

Laufey - A Night At The Symphony
NR

Magical sounding vocal jazz / traditional pop. The orchestra brings a sweet undertone to Laufey's soft voice. This is a very pretty sounding release. I liked how the dynamics highlighted the ebb and flow of the arrangements ('Best Friend', 'The Nearness of You'). I also think the title is a good description of the music. Each song feels like it could play over the end of an old movie as the screen turns to black apart from a shrinking circle framing the main characters walking off in the ... read more

boygenius - the record
NR

Heartfelt singer-songwriter / indie rock. The builds were very natural and emphasised the honesty of the writing. The stripped back simpler tracks highlight their strength as a group and again puts the writing front and centre to make for comforting music. A warm hug. I particularly enjoyed '$20'.

Daedelus - Xenopocene
NR

This LP begins as a wonderfully glitchy collision of strings and electronics. It is so soothing and beautiful. It next transitions into a more playful, experimental, and electronic album - picking up different instruments along the way (guitar in 'Float'). There is always something new around the corner on this album. It is lush and rich in ideas, and exciting in execution.

Iceboy Violet - Not a Dream but a Controlled Explosion
NR

More moody and wispy collages from Iceboy Violet. I love how weightless and free the music sounds (looping electronic instrumental on 'Paris, Bradford'). This release achieves a cold feeling by contrasting Iceboy Violet's yearning voice with misty electronics and immersive production. I particularly enjoyed 'Pablo's Cathedral'.

NR

This is very symphonic (as the title suggests). It sounds very American and uses the brass sections very well - giving it a larger sound. It has a nice level of jazziness to modern-classical. I loved how much character the mute gave the trumpet in this release. This album made me visualise an urban American city, with each movement taking me somewhere new. And of course Wynton Marsalis was outstanding as always. I particularly enjoyed 'Symphony No. 4 "The Jungle": VI. Struggle in the ... read more

Zoe Rahman - Colour of Sound
NR

Warm and inviting jazz with an exciting edge. I really enjoyed how much texture was brought by the drums ('Go With The Flow') and how the brightness of the piano created so many expression filled passages, using a wide range of the instrument ('Roots'). The main themes which the tracks are built around are consistently memorable and make for satisfying moments when the music returns to it. It effortlessly sets a beautiful backdrop, in a way that makes the music sound incredibly rich. I ... read more

Blur - The Ballad of Darren
NR

Slow paced blur ballads. They have pleasant instrumental crescendos, and the tracks come together to make an atmosphere akin to the artwork, gloomy and isolated but at peace in front of a bleak backdrop. I enjoyed the light and fun tone the drum machines added ('The Narcissist'). I particularly enjoyed 'The heights', 'The Narcissist'.

Travis Scott - UTOPIA
NR

One of the best paced albums I've heard. The songs always seem to end at the perfect moment. Whilst listening I kept finding a lot of comparisons to 'Donda' - genre eccentricity, each song's distinct purpose, and the shared darker undertone to the music. I enjoyed the ambitious samples and pop-up features, it made for an exciting listening experience, but was also justified by good performances and creative structuring and track sequencing. I also enjoyed the futuristic and interesting trap ... read more

Sigur Rós - ÁTTA
NR

Sigur Rós continues to make the world's most pretty sounding lullabies. The lush, slow, and dreamy instrumentals are calming and pristine. Jonsi's clear and emotive vocals are incredibly powerful and moving. Its just so nice to listen to! It is Sigur Rós's intimate and wintry bittersweetness that makes me love their music. This evokes the same mood but integrating their more recent ambient work to create a fluffy bed of gorgeous sounds. So, this release has a sound somewhere ... read more
