This disorienting psychedelic sound collage is packed with left turns. I loved the melted guitar tones throughout - it gies the impression that the track is warping and melting. This feeling is emphasised by it's formless qualities - e.g. really short tracks, amount of changes in one track - 'Divider'. Within this odd structure is really beautiful music that feels secretive as listening becomes more like discovering. I particularly enjoyed 'The Weather', 'House Music', and 'No! (Geiger Dub)'.
Gritty and thunderous metal. It has a terrifying and ominous atmosphere - distilled perfectly on the track 'Null'. The sludgy weight of the guitar chugs adds power to the music. It has wonderfully dark passages which it builds to effectively - having contrasting quieter sections.. I particularly enjoyed 'Torn', 'Stasis', 'Rend', and 'Stare'.
Gorgeous jazzy stuff! It has rich and smooth Arabic instrumentation complemented by urgent and emotional singing and lovely saxophone playing. This combines for a really moving and magical sound (e.g. 'Balaya'). Another way it achieves this is with it's use of space - 'Le Cri Du Poète' is just two instruments and has an eerie and striking quiet to it. I particularly enjoyed 'Splendid tales', and 'Balaya'.
Crashing hype hip hop with goofy samples (e.g. Talking ben in DANCE NOW). I love how hard the beats are. It is such an energetic listen! Their enjoyment is incredibly infectious, making this in your face loud album so much fun to listen to!
Bright MPB with a lot of funk. It's bouncy, summery, and fun. A lovely listen. The voice is very inviting and sweet and complemented by lush instrumentals. I particularly enjoyed 'Electric Fish', 'Camelo Azul', and 'Insista Em Mim'.
This death metal album is packed full of interesting contrasts (Jazzy midsection in 'Formed From Filth'). It's chaotic and exciting with gripping guitars and pummelling drums (the explosive start to 'Arsenal of Tyranny'). The frequent jazz inspiration adds to the anxiety and power of the music. There is genuinely no predicting this album! This is because all the instruments have great versatility in their tone. I particularly enjoyed 'Formed From Filth', 'Landform', and 'Arsenal of Tyranny'.
The tuned percussion grooves have an energetic roughness. The wooden and hollow sounds combine with inviting call and response singing. Its a fun, jangle-y, and lively album! Such a lovely sound! I found the inclusion of the tracks with Gabber Modus Operandi added an interesting heft to the grooves. I particularly enjoyed 'Omukazi Iwe Ongeyengula Nguli Zna Ntyo Bwenkola', '140', and 'Bwofuna Sente Opulaninga Ekyina Kuyamba Nga Ngo Kairike'
Magical and gentle waves of new age, ambience, and jazz. It is warm, careful, and soothing. It has such a deep and vast sound that really sets the tone of the project. This is emphasised by the way the flute is incorporated into the music. The tone is constantly manipulated by effects, making it more and more magical, mystical, and mysterious. This grants freedom to take time wandering.
This hip hop release is rich and introspective. Their talent comes across both in incredible variation in vocal style (sombre and direct [Quaranta] vs nasal and off the wall [Tantor]) and creative beats (Tantor). The album has a very powerful atmosphere to it emphasised by it's directness. I particularly enjoyed 'Quaranta', 'Jenn’s Terrific Vacation (feat. Kassa Overall)', 'Shakedown', and 'Bass Jam'.
Starry and peaceful jazz. It's blend of twinkling synths ('Lee'), smooth ambience, and gorgeous keyboard work. It is an inviting and serene listen I particularly enjoyed 'Lee', 'London Nights', 'Love Theme', and 'Viento Calido'
Lovely retro electronics and loft psych pop/rock combine for a charming and unpredictable album. It is packed with wonderfully warped transitions and hypnotic grooves - 'Die Frommen Wanderer'. The loudness of the drums added so much energy and made me want to dance along! I particularly enjoyed 'Die Frommen Wanderer', 'Die Nachricht Schneller Als Der Wind', 'Zauberer Und Die Hex', 'Bevor Und Nach Dem Sturm', and 'Lichtermond'
These artists are so complementary! The ambient soundscapes of Space Afrika highlight the emotional experimentations of Rainy Miller. It sounds cloudy, introspective, and gorgeously grey. The seamless soup of hip hop, auto tune, and ambience is soothing and comforting. It takes it's time to set the atmosphere of the track - e.g. ambient intro to 'Summon the Spirit / Demon (feat. Voice Actor)'. I particularly enjoyed 'Summon the Spirit / Demon (feat. Voice Actor)', 'Sweet (I'm Free) [feat. ... read more
Prominent and nimble percussion pairs with gentle and bitty melodies for a lovely jazz album. The gentleness is my favourite thing about this album. I love how the soft and airy saxophone playing adds to this peaceful atmosphere. The release also has good crescendos and variation though - 'Greek Honey Slick feat. Tom Skinner'. I particularly enjoyed. 'Greek Honey Slick feat. Tom Skinner', 'Fall on Flowers', 'Did You Know feat. Momoko Gill, Mettashiba', 'Not Even Sobbing', and 'The Best Thing in ... read more
Very tactile ambience. It is very sparring, giving it an interesting empty sound. It feels like a secret. I enjoyed the tingly whispering qualities. I also like the way it played with dissonance - it made for uneasy and eerie atmospheres. I particularly enjoyed 'Angel Tape'.
The soft hiss of this Jumpy electronic music is a great contrast to its constantly changing melodies. It has a more IDM first half and a Future Garage second half. Both have engaging flows and unique ideas - piano in first half. The production is excitingly unpredictable. I particularly enjoyed 'MOTION IN DESCENT', 'GRADIENT', 'BELOW GROUND', 'IF U WANT', and 'PYRE'.
Festival sized beats for festival headliners. I love how the album flows! There is a rich and feel good carefree quality to their hooks - 'The Darkness That You Fear (Harvest Mix)'. Nothing is rushed, and the tracks are well varied. I particularly enjoyed 'Live Again (feat. Halo Maud)' and 'The Darkness That You Fear (Harvest Mix)'.
Addictive vocal manipulations! I love the way they can become so manipulated and cut up to add to the instrumental - 'Staring At The Ceiling'. The poppy songwriting on top of classic PC music sounds makes for feel-good absurdly catchy neon music. I loved when the music was reflective - 'Staring At The Ceiling'. I particularly enjoyed 'Affirmations', 'Lip Sync', 'Staring At The Ceiling', and 'Unbreakable'.
