Instrumentally sound, evocative and limit-testing. Very enjoyable. Either on or off the drugs is one of the best songs of the year.
Some shit straight out of Read Dead Redemption. Cool as fk though. Fun record with plenty of variation between funk and soul jazz.
My god it's sad to witness this falloff first hand. Besides a couple of tracks that may only seem enjoyable when being compared to the mush of the rest of the album, namely TIME MOVING SLOW, RIVER, and FIELD TRIP, it feels like a different artist all-together. How it can be possible to mess up previously heavenly leaks like Slide, 530 and Sky City, we will never know. Even the production didn't stand out for the most part, which was decent on V1.
Emotionally packed tracklist, unsurprisingly committed to the generally melancholic and addictive sound so well associated with the band already. Could have had more variety but I am used to all of their songs sounding similar already. However their formula of dreamy ambient production and desolate lyricism are what pull the project together.
Gave a opp arachnophobia. real shit, this is super consistent but could've done with some shorter tracks. Production is top notch as you would expect and I enjoyed the layoff between iconic trap artists and the harmonic expertise of artists like Swae Lee, James Blake, and Roisee, who could really use this as a breakthrough. All in all definitely accomplishes what was tasked, it sounds like a spiderman soundtrack.
Cool album, experimental even for Donald Glover, the features we're really well placed and the production surprised continuously throughout. Has this layer of finality to it, probably a good way to retire the Chlidish Gambino gimmick. Too long. Just.
Bloated, swollen tracklist disregarding the story of self hate being told. Besides from this TLOP features some of Kanye's best production and his best since converting to gospel music. Some of the tracks on here, namely ultralight beam and saint pablo and contenders for Kanye's best songs. Feature placement is pretty much perfect, listening to this you can just tell what went into it. What a great record.
I was going to write my own review but then read this - "Listening to this album was one of the greatest journeys that music has ever taken me. I've never heard anything that sounds like this album before, it's just amazing." Summarises it perfectly, with hints of Kanye-esque production, and songwriting and romantic delivery that more than reflects the dark twisted cover of the record. Each songs carries with it the same dark yet elegant mood while still having a consistent ... read more
Comfort album, quite an immersive project and the sound really projects Yung Lean is in his comfort zone and is just making whatever he feels like, no limits or social barriers. At time is let down by weak and lost sounding verses, but often makes up for this with catchy hooks and unique production. Lyrically... I know he is Swedish but did bro just shuffle the dictionary on this?
Cut the shit (10-15) songs and you have one of Kanye's best albums. Ideally the tracklist should run like this.
1. Jail
2. God Breathed
3. Off The Grid
4. Hurricane
5. Praise God
6. Believe What I say
7. Moon
8. Heaven and Hell
9. Keep My Spirit Alive
10. Jesus Lord
11. New Again
12. Pure Souls
13. Come to Life
14. No Child Left Behind
Wow what an album this would have been. In my eyes it feels like JiK but insanely levelled up.
Starting with the negative, I find parts of the record not to my liking, and can have quite a sonically annoying noise, especially tracks like Airbag which I feel is just overwhelmingly loud and chaotic. In general though, when the tracks are calmer, this is brilliantly cohesive, and in my eyes laid a foundation for all forms of psychedelic music, whether that be rock, hip-hop or any other genre you can feel the influence, huge achievement. The 808s of psych music.
The most culturally conscious, acquainted album I've heard. Even the interlude is amazing. So hard to pick my favourites. Opps, Redemption, Paramedic, All The Stars. Idk if its racist to say that I feel like I'm in Africa listening to this. SO SO SO good I love this. From the unique production to the perfect feature selection, my favourite movie soundtrack by far, and an unreal 14 tracks.
6 minutes of joy, one elevator I wouldn't mind being stuck in.
Really promising, comes across with quite a unique style with his own take on R&B. The lethargy doesn't impact the pacing at all, the slow feel is welcomed and executed well to the extent each song can be enjoyed while not in a hurry to reach the next. There's an addictive element to most songs which definitely played a part in this album's success. Something I'm not a fan of so much is the annoyance conveyed in his voice regularly. A real summer record that manages to ... read more
Definitely a raw and emotional record. Has tendencies to blend songs into the next but individually quite immense on the production scale and surprisingly the whiney vocals match the rough drums and bass very well. For me, could have done with some more variety but overall enjoyable.
I wasn't a huge fan when this dropped but grew on me a lot. Purple Rain, New Drop, Glock, all misses that turned into some of my favourites.
To be honest, as much as I yearn to like Ski Mask's music, I struggle a lot. For me a lot of his music sounds way too similar to warrant relistening ever, and this isn't an exception - The majority of the album is almost identical to his last two albums, but this one is lacking the one or two standout tracks (Jump is a good track and Shibuya comes close) that have provided Ski with the triumph that tracks like Nuketown and Foot Fetish were able to. He really needs to switch it up, we get it, ... read more
7 perfect tracks, genuinely beautiful album and the last solid Kanye album... feels like this album just levels up as you progress through the tracklist. Perfect work. Lush, kind production, where rap and R&B styles are implemented throughout perfectly to match the tone of the album.
