'EXPERIMENTAL RAP' has some of the best production on any JPEGMAFIA album and his hooks hit more times than not. Unfortunately the content, song-structures and overall cohesion of the album severely lack follow through and leave it feeling a bit thrown together and lower effort than his previous releases.
We as people and consumers of art and media tend to be greatly averse to those who aren't so humble in their fame and fortune and arguably rightly so. I also struggle to understand such ego-driven perspectives at times but that doesn't really take away from my enjoyment of the music all that much. I think his grandiose personality, writing and attitude towards his music career has left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. However, if this is how Fakemink chooses to process ... read more
New Mexican Stargazers have the ability to put you in a deepened state of reverie, a fuzzy blanket of sound laden in effects overwhelms your brain but instead of turning it off in seek of comfort, you find that comfort in submitting yourself to the music and gently drifting away to the melancholy of the transient nature of life. It both terrifies you and soothes your soul simultaneously.
It's a formula we've heard a hundred times before but as usual, Bruno's above average vocal performances help separate him from the rest, at least a little bit.
'The Mountain' is one of the most unique sounding, culturally rich and spiritually fulfilling music experiences of the decade.
This one feels unfinished from Chance, like he threw together a handful of scraps he had saved and put them on a project. There's a couple of vibes on here but nothing more.
While not as sonically compelling as his previous work, this is Choker's most emotionally rich album to date.
This album is deceptive, after I’d listened to it a few times I was convinced it was amazing. In reality the first four tracks and the last two tracks are amazing, the rest of the track-list is unfortunately padded out with some half-decent songs that don’t hold up to the highs of the album. Still a fun time though.
Kelela, SZA and Sampha all released their debut albums in 2017, yet Kelela gets nowhere near as much recognition for her ground breaking Alternative R&B sound. Bear in mind this is potentially my favourite genre as I believe that when it reaches its true heights it's puts on display everything music has to offer, from the digital to the analogue. I would argue that almost any musical influence is welcome in the genre and it seems to culminate in some of my favourite albums of all time ... read more
I'm really trying with Drake, I never want to dislike music but this is just another average album from him with a couple of terrible tracks to top it off. I can't help but completely disassociate listening to this, it's just not interesting. Also Drake's singing is painfully mid. Sampha on 'Too Much' is the only great part of this album and his vocals are mixed horribly for some reason. I don't care how influential an artist is, if the music doesn't hold ... read more
As much as 'The Sideline Story' is a flawed album with the odd eyebrow raiser that perhaps hasn't aged incredibly well, I appreciate how animated Cole is on this project and how much passion he put into his craft. It makes the lower points of the album more tolerable because there's a certain energy to the music that you can't deny, it's very feel good stuff. The beats lowkey slap too, way more than I expected.
As a fan of 'Smithereens', an album that is often criticised, I thought that it was disjointed and felt unfinished but I genuinely enjoyed most of the tracks on that album, I felt like Joji did a great job of conveying emotion through the hazy production on there. Whereas on 'Piss In The Wind', Joji jumps from one underwhelming snippet to another, there are so few fleshed out songs on this album and it wouldn't be so much of a problem if the brief ideas were at least ... read more
There are a few solid melodic trap cuts on 'OCTANE' like 'Rendezvous' and 'Secondhand' for example, however the album really tanks when you hit the terrible 'Tiramisu' and it doesn't fully recover past this point.
I used to listen to this guy's Future Bass stuff before I got into music but this is quite bad. It's really overblown and the melodramatic production is incredibly obnoxious. The vocals are uninteresting too. This album thinks it's a grand spectacle but it's just sterile and flat.
Rarely do I find an album that has lyrical themes and content that pairs so well with the music itself, they are interwoven from conception, you can't separate them. 'My Ghosts Go Ghost' is a surreal and beautifully psychedelic slow burn that is incredibly rewarding to listen to in its entirety with brilliantly contemplative song-writing that acts as a perfect companion to the music.
