MMT gets off to a bit of a slow start but as soon as it gets going with 'I Am the Walrus' it's a wonderfully whimsical experience. I feel like their production really levelled up on this album and is the highlight here, it's genius for the time period.
Another good album from The Beatles, I do find it to be a little bit overblown with a few underwhelming tracks such as 'Within You Without You' which doesn't do an awful lot of anything and meanders on for five minutes. 'A Day in the Life' while clearly quite ambitious and mostly enjoyable, it's also jarring and comes across a bit clumsy with transitions that don't make a whole lot of sense and stop me from loving the song.
I understand the impact this album ... read more
For a soundtrack, 'Help!' might be the best album in The Beatles discography up to the point of its release, with the beautiful 'Yesterday' being the best song up this point.
Another Alternative Metal experience from Poppy, that despite its shortcomings, packs some bite, both vocally and lyrically.
I'm not a fan of the more squeaky clean pop sections in a lot of her more recent stuff, usually leaning more towards the more aggressive and louder parts as Poppy can really scream when she wants to. With that being said, her blend of metal and pop works for me from time to time, like on Guardian. Although I can't help but wish that this album was just thirty ... read more
‘Beatles for Sale’ is a consistently decent album from The Beatles, nothing too special but it’s all enjoyable enough.
This mixtape is one of the most unique and entertaining hip hop projects I've heard in a while.
Another good showing from The Beatles, although I'm seeing a pattern that their early records had a hard time maintaining consistency over to the B-sides.
Whilst 'Please Please Me' has variety in its sound, intensity and emotional tone, 'With The Beatles' sounds a lot more homogeneous in comparison, it doesn't do an awful lot to build upon their sound and if I didn't know I would have thought that their debut succeeded this record as it sounds more ground-breaking for both the band and the sound of 60s Pop Rock. That being said, it's a good enough time despite my criticisms as well the second half of the album ... read more
The Beatles' debut album exemplifies the power straightforward pop song writing can have when it comes to conveying emotion and and standing the test of time.
Jenny has a lovely and unique voice, unfortunately it feels wasted on these melodramatic, generic pop songs.
This album weirdly reminds me of the music I would hear when my Grandad took me to the Vineyard Church as a kid.
The mathy lo-fi instrumentals are really nice but the vocals aren't doing much for me unfortunately. It's cool see a band of this style coming out of Manchester though.
Courtney isn't doing anything too adventurous on 'Valentine' but good song writing and lyrical themes help evoke a good deal of emotion on this album.
This band is deeply interesting to me, I had never heard this band before listening to this but now I will be. Florence's vocal style is fascinating, at times tedious but very intriguing and it marries incredibly well with the band's instrumentation. Her lyrics are cryptic yet tongue-in-cheek, funny whilst blunt and pessimistic. I think the song-writing here could use a tad more focus and direction but I can't wait to see where this band goes from here because I think they have ... read more
Outside of some of the production, 'locket' is fairly generic and derivative but it's ok while it's on.
