I wish I could get as much into this as others seem to be, and while there are some amazing tracks on here and the overall project is a journey like none other, it's not something that kept me enthralled for a lot of the time. I still think it's a super great record though, just not one of my favorites of all time
Yes, Aphex Twin has created a lot of high energy, adrenaline inducing music, with all kinds of sounds and patterns that send all kinds of energy through your body, and I *adore* those songs.
But this album is Richard's true magnum opus. Even if not every song on there individually is a standout track, the overall nearly 3 hour long experience is something that can truly never be done again in music. You're venturing in a slow dreamscape that goes from calming to unsettling, from ... read more
quite inconsistent and just a super weird record overall but it has some bangers on it!!
Pretty much all the songs on here are a vibe, but only few of them really grip me like most other Aphex Twin songs do
This is probably the most main character energy an album has ever radiated
The amount of history this album holds is in itself worth a high score, almost tricking the listener with the first two songs seeming to celebrate the band but as we get near the end, songs like Circus World and On the Tundra really show how close they were to calling it quits. On the Tundra especially is such a hauntingly beautiful goodbye, but thank god their talents finally got recognised and that they were able to justify the joke - today
And it only got better from that point
A beautiful frankenstein of dreamy synths and that classic 90s vibe
Such an impeccable anomaly in the Guided by Voices discography...
Pretty much every track on here feels so different from everything in the GBV discography, and even each other, and yet still pretty much all of them are so beautiful. This is absolutely a hidden gem in the GBV discography and definitely one of my favorites from them.
real fans know Bottomless Pit is their best song
though this def isn't their best album
What I love most about this album is that it isn't an intense epic soundtrack about the apocalypse, it feels a lot more like a slow but dreadful decay of humanity. I also like to believe that the last part in Sleep does represent a spark of hope, which I appreciate even more. Speaking of Sleep: it absolutely steals the show on this album lol, one of my favorite songs of all time from beginning to end
I can always imagine my favorite album of all time being topped by something else, I know that it will always be possible for a record to exist that just clicks with me in even more ways than I previously thought possible.
But the last 3 tracks on this album are not like that. It is not possible to recreate such an emotionally heavy and beautiful ending as Deathconsciousness did.
Impressive how they take shoegaze and make into something quite warm and cozy sounding, while still keeping a hint of sadness in there. Really fun album!
I would consider this one of his best if it was just more consistent, it definitely kind of leaves you longing for more
I need to give this album a special thanks for being one of if not the one album that got me more interested in music and albums as an artform. I'm not as big of a fan of it as I used to be but the way every sound in this record feels so meticulously perfected is something I will always love and respect.
