Fairly disappointing. Mura Masa is a great producer, and on a conceptual level I like this album quite a bit. However, it just doesn't really come through as a whole piece, and it's examination of nostalgia and the melancholia of young adulthood comes across as slightly trite.

i can't believe i listened to over an hour of this garbage, but i did. Empath is what happens when budgets and egos are unmanageably high, when someone wants to be >out there< but seemingly has no idea how to do it in a way that's even slightly palatable.

really solid debut, gotta say i don't *quite* see where the insane acclaim is coming from (97 on metacritic is fuckin crazy), and in terms of 2019 british rap albums Little Simz's GREY Area blows this out of the water, but it's also lusciously produced, deeply ambitious, and probably the most conceptually consistent hip-hop album i've heard from London in a while. its ambitions overreach its grasp sometimes and Dave really needs to work on changing up his flows a lot more, but its messiness ... read more
