The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention
84

Seeing that Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood were in this group , there was no way I was avoiding checking out this new project. I'd never heard of Tom Skinner or Sons of Kemet, but this project certainly has me intrigued after hearing it in full. Many will describe this as a Radiohead album under a different name, but even the styles some of Thom Yorke's solo material and Tom Skinner's jazzy drumming riffs make an appearance as well. The familiar yet still fresh sound across ... read more

Northlane - Obsidian
66

I can definitely appreciate Northlane furthering the experimentation of their sound, and they go a step further on Obsidian. However, the songwriting quality of the tracklist is very inconsistent, and the album as a whole doesn't have too much cohesiveness to it. There are some brilliant bangers on here, but there's also a good few half-baked and under-developed ideas that don't really go anywhere. It's not a bad album by any means, but I feel like there's more they could've done with this new ... read more

Animals as Leaders - Parrhesia
77

What made Animals As Leader's discography up until now so good was that their instrumental approach to djent was so kaleidoscopic and rich in sound that no vocalist was needed to fill in any missing gaps. On Parrhesia, while there's a great collection of tracks here, some don't successfully fill that gap and leave my mind wandering off. It's certainly not their best record, but still far from an unpleasant listen nonetheless.

Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
93

Saw a good bit of hype around this project and decided to give it a shot. This is one of the most unique, thrilling, and overall incredible hardcore punk projects I've heard in so long. Do not overlook this album.

FAVORITE TRACKS: ALL
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Thumbsucker (if I had to choose, still a banger though)

Despite Charli XCX steering towards a more traditional pop-focused record, CRASH manages to get through just fine only with a few dents and scratches.

FAVORITE TRACKS: Baby, Twice, Constant Repeat, Beg For You, Lightning
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Every Rule

Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez See Your Future
82

Melt My Eyez sees a slight shift in direction for Denzel, moving towards more conscious/introspective lyric writing as well as a wider variety of instrumentation and more fluid song progression. While a few ideas on here are rough around the edges, this album showcases a nice evolution of his sound, and I'm curious to see if it's elaborated further upon in future projects. I can definitely feel this is a grower album, so expect my score to change at some point.

Beach House - Once Twice Melody
74

I can definitely see the widespread appeal of Once Twice Melody, and I thoroughly enjoyed a good amount of the cuts on this album. The spots where this album lacks feel like ideas that Beach House has already combed through on previous projects, or tracks that don't really evolve into anything interesting. It's not my favorite project of theirs, but it's certainly a welcome addition to their discography.

Vein.fm - This World Is Going to Ruin You
80

This World Is Going to Ruin You is yet another bombastic album from Vein.fm, and rivals pretty closely to Errorzone. What holds this back from far surpassing their previous record is that a good chunk of the shorter tracks felt incomplete and could've been elaborated on a bit more. That being said, I guess it's good to complain about wanting more because the band still delivers a lot of pure mathcore goodness in its 32 minute span.

파란노을 [Parannoul] - White Ceiling / Black Dots Wandering Around

Parannoul just doesn't miss!

FAVORITE TRACKS: Soft Bruise, Escape, Someday, White Ceiling (demo), Ending Credit
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Growing Pain

Mitski - Laurel Hell
68

While this is far from a bad project, Laurel Hell is undoubtedly Mitski's weakest output. Tracks like "Everyone" and "I Guess" felt repetitive and almost filler-y, and some others were pleasant but forgettable. That being said, the rest of the album is still pretty solid, with a few of the singles and deeper cuts like "Valentine, Texas" standing out among the rest.

FAVORITE TRACKS: Valentine, Texas; The Only Heartbreaker; Love Me More
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Everyone

Rolo Tomassi - Where Myth Becomes Memory
81

Where Myth Becomes Memory is an evolution in sound for Rolo Tomassi, and while the overall flow of the tracks and album can be a bit jarring, the mixture of beauty and brutality throughout was really a unique experience that everyone should hear.

FAVORITE TRACKS: Drip, The End of Eternity, Almost Always, Labyrinthine, Mutual Ruin, To Resist Forgetting, Prescience, Cloaked
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Stumbling

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
83

The much anticipated sophomore album of Black Country, New Road has arrived, and it's certainly no slump. The project is a much more subtle album compared to For the first time, and sometimes to a fault. However, Ants From Up There is well deserving of a must-hear, as it's the band's most cohesive and beautifully somber album thus far.

Fit For An Autopsy - Oh What the Future Holds
69

Though Oh What The Future Holds isn't groundbreaking by any means and even a bit underwhelming in the first half, it's definitely one of the easier-to-listen deathcore records I've heard, and I would still recommend this album to anyone curious about the genre.

FAVORITE TRACKS: Conditional Healing, Collateral Damage, Savages
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Pandora

A Crowd Of Rebellion - ABANDONSYSTEM__
65

ABANDONSYSTEM__ is more of the same from A Crowd Of Rebellion, which is not all bad except for a few sloppy performances across the EP.

FAVORITE TRACKS: DISTRESS
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: TATSUMAKI

宇多田ヒカル [Hikaru Utada] - BADモード [Bad Mode]
73

Utada Hikaru continues her over two decade stretch of pleasant and vibey art j-pop tunes with BADモード.

FAVORITE TRACKS: 誰にも言わない, 気分じゃないの (Not in the Mood), 君に夢中, Somewhere Near Marseilles, Find Love
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Face My Fears

Earl Sweatshirt - SICK!
57

My reviews on Earl Sweatshirt will probably always be a hot take. Abstract hip-hop is one of my favorite subgenres of hip-hop, but for one reason or another I've never really vibed with his more recent stuff. At least Some Rap Songs had some neatly layered and trippy beats despite sounding repetitive at points, but Sick! feels like an even more stripped back and underwhelming Earl.

FAVORITE TRACKS: Fire in the Hole
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: God Laughs

FKA twigs - CAPRISONGS
58

The overall sound and vibe of CAPRISONGS isn't bad and actually quite pleasant, but a lot of this album feels underdeveloped and leaves a lot to be desired.

FAVORITE TRACKS: tears in the club, minds of men
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: jealousy

The Weeknd - Dawn FM
56

Here we go, my first album of 2022... and it's extremely underwhelming. I had high hopes for future The Weeknd projects after really taking a liking to After Hours. While there are some good highlights on this album, the album as a whole feels a bit generic, and the spoken word passages really do absolutely nothing for it either.

FAVORITE TRACKS: Sacrifice, Here We Go... Again
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Every Angel Is Terrifying

Hail the Sun - New Age Filth
82

Despite my fanaticism with post-hardcore, I've actually never heard of Hail The Sun before and damn have I been missing out. I absolutely love the math-y and energetic riffs from both the guitars and drums throughout the project that really makes this project stand out.

FAVORITE TRACKS: Parasitic Cleanse, Punch Drunk, Slipped My Mind, Domino, Slander, Devaluation, Hysteriantics, Solipsism
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Made Your Mark

73

A well-rounded project that elaborates a bit more on the classic indie rock and bedroom pop sounds.

FAVORITE TRACKS: Real Pain, Pretty Pictures, Bad Dream, Kill Me
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: 17

On Fit For An Autopsy - Oh What the Future Holds
"I both agree and disagree. I think with deathcore rising in popularity, there's definitely been a surge and oversaturation of breakdown-core which I'm also getting tired of at this point, but there's definitely still bands out there that mix in great technique. A very recent example I can think of is Lorna Shore, and while "To The Hellfire" definitely is breakdown heavy, the "...And I Return To Nothingness" EP as a whole really showcases a whole lot of variety in riffs and technique."
