Whilst this is a step down from her work on empathogen, I still feel like her soul is in it. Feels like an extension of empathogen in a way, like these may have been a collection of songs and ideas that wouldn't have fit on that album. I appreciate what was done and what was attempted but it feels like it was a little rushed and not as fleshed out as I would like it to be. Not bad, not great.
A nice R&B record. Brent tries to keep you guessing throughout with a few different vibes laced into one beautiful collection of smooth songs that made me feel good. I will probably return to this a fair few times in the near future and continue to enjoy Brents work.
I was worried that the setting of a soundtrack would water down Charli and her sound to the point that it wouldn't be worth listening to. I almost skipped it but I am glad I didn't because this is a really awesome pocket to see Charli in. Living up to the cinematic side of things while not compromising anything that makes her individual as an artist. Well worth a listen and might have to give the movie a go now that I listened to this.
To start off with the complimentary side of things. Somehow this band has managed to make the sound of initial metalcore not sound dated and managed to put out something that sounds like it still belongs in the space. Also some of the song writing ideas are interesting and help make it a stand out. All this to say I don't think this is for me. I know its good, I appreciate it and this band for what they have done for the genre as forerunners but I love what came after far more than their ... read more
An impressive experience in handling death and the grieving process. Exploring a lot of cultural sounds and sensibilities that helps give the album it's identity and the utilisation of posthumous features on some songs is not only tasteful but thematic and effective. Long, sprawling and intelligent, the things they were able to do to make you feel the sadness of grief but by the end have the closure to push past it and feel the acceptance of death and mortality. Gorillaz was an act I ... read more
Unbelievable sound. This was my most anticipated release after the first single dropped and this was announced for the early year and it delivered. Somehow Varials answered my question of "how do we get heavier than recent Knocked Loose and bands like Bodysnatcher?" The answer was literally make your shit explode. Masterfully mixed to create a thunderous and vicious portrayal of non stop pure rage that had me captivated from start to finish. Immediately made the main playlist and will ... read more
Bruno got them BILLS DUE. While a heavy step down from 24k Magic and the work he was doing with Silk Sonic, I still enjoyed this for what it was. The instrumentation was on fire, the mix is clean and punchy and Bruno is singing his ASS off. Slightly disappointing as this was highly anticipated but can appreciate it for what it is. A good pop album that incorporates many styles to give it a little swagger
A very vulnerable and focused Baby Keem returns to the public with a well put together story book of his life. I really don't see a ceiling on him and this album proves it. From boppy R&B jams to introspective story pieces to the big boisterous bangers he does so well. This has a little piece of everything and it all comes down to the heart and soul that Keem puts into it. Listened first at the listening party, gave it a rest and now I am going to have this on rotation for a LONG time.
I got love for the homegrown hero Bic Runga but this really didn't hit for me. Thin production, instrumentation that range from trying too hard to be interesting and sounding grating in the process to just the most basic boring lines that aren't able to be saved, nothing burger lyrics that feel dated. I had hopes for this record but I suppose after a ten year break we gotta shake the rust off somehow.
Truly a float by album that somehow, despite being 49 minutes has so much bloat and filler. Seriously, there are enough good songs to have a decent EP and enough decent songs to fill a tight 30 minute album. It would be a marginal improvement. Once again a low effort playlist stuffer that brings nothing to the table.
Going into this, I didn't know how to feel. First song initially started to put me off but the deeper I got the more fascinating it became. Super creative and complex album with some truly strange sounds that this band makes work so brilliantly. Well delivered, well balanced and well worth the time I spent with it.
Legendary metal band comes in 2026 to show that gritty, raw metal is still possible. Somehow dark, grungy and yet still manages a very clean over all mix. Brutal across the board and while this is not really my style of metal I still have a deep appreciation for bands like this that still have it
Gorgeous EP showing that this band has such a good grasp on their sound. Fun songs that balance a good amount of bouncy poppy stylings and enough grit to maintain the indie sound. Well worth a good few spins as it is short, sweet and full of substance.
This was a random pick up on a Spotify recommendation. I am happy I did because this is an extremely interesting project. I found myself on repeat listens still not able to pin it down in the best way. Song to song they keep it interesting and write something that stands out in the track list. Highly recommend a few spins for it to settle as at first I found the voice annoying and some of the decisions a little confusing but ended up coming around after a few repeats
A solid EDM project with some really fun moments. There are points it drags with some same same songs on it but the occasional banger saves it from feeling as mid as it could be. It can be a slog at times dragging between the same few sounds so it does make it feel like it's not worth it to find a couple bangers but I am glad I gave it full chance
Why does Joji make it so difficult to love Joji? After such a crazy opener I can't help but feel like this falls off a cliff with each song feeling disconnected from the last. There is no cohesion and nothing interesting defining most of these songs to make up for that lack of cohesion. Most of them feel like unfinished or Ideas that haven't been fleshed out that have just been collecting dust in a hard drive somewhere. Outside of 2 or 3 songs I remain disappointed in Joji's ... read more
Supremely disappointing effort, especially following Lovelorn (my throughway to the band). I felt like the whole time they were trying to do a Currents thing but struggled to make it work. With all this sounding very hollow or phoned in in most songs and the lifeless production on top I can't help but feel nothing for this project. Hopefully they are able to pick it back up on the next one and return to form
Smooth R&B project that whilst nothing astounding, is so well put together and worth the listen. Soft, gorgeous and balanced. I found myself floating through this project, grooving along and just feeling good. I will be taking a few songs for the playlist for sure and look forward to more from this artist.
I am conflicted about this project. I felt like I couldn't pin down an identity for it. Continuous shifts in style and genre but the vocals remain consistent (aside from the occasional clean). I have been getting into and loving Blackgaze recently but I think this one didn't click like the others. I understand the vocal style is a staple of the genre but I think it consistently made the songs more and more disjointed. They kind of start getting it back on the rails by the ass end but ... read more
Straight up brutal project. Been a while that I have jumped into such a consistent slam project and really enjoyed myself. Gritty, dark, HEVY, has all the necessary pieces. Feels like a classic from the bygone era of Slam. Loved what I heard and will be returning to it often
