QUICK THOUGHTS

Without a doubt one of the best indie rock records of the year, don’t let this go under the radar!!

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Wild God

QUICK THOUGHTS

Despite the devastation that Nick Cave certainly has experienced over the last decade with the passing of two of his sons, ‘Wild God’ isn’t exactly somber. Rather, Cave sings with a jubilant and exciting optimism predicated on his hope and faith.

Cindy Lee - Diamond Jubilee

QUICK THOUGHTS

Lo-fi pop that sounds like it was recorded in a metal trash can (it's good).

Mitski - The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We
92

QUICK THOUGHTS

Mitski’s warm and earthy tone is ever-present in 2023’s ‘The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We’ and marks a return to those gloomy singer-songwriter ballads after what many may consider the first miss of her career with 2022’s ‘Laurel Hell’. Her journey here is grim and graphic, describing her many instances of trauma and self-sabotage through alcoholism and failed relationships. The record is certainly rich with potent emotion, ... read more

Dua Lipa - Radical Optimism
70

QUICK THOUGHTS

Dua Lipa’s long awaited third studio album ‘Radical Optimism’ sees the pop star slightly less focused on the disco hits and more interested in dramatic, meaningful, and somewhat psychedelic songwriting. For better or for worse, I found the disco hit singles to be far more entertaining and compelling, but that’s okay! “Houdini” and “Illusion” are exactly what I’m looking for from Dua Lipa: high energy and instantly catchy ... read more

Kamasi Washington - Fearless Movement

QUICK THOUGHTS

American saxophonist Kamasi Washington’s latest studio album ‘Fearless Movement’ is like a cauldron of boiling water: sometimes bubbling over, other times coming down to a low simmer – yet, always maintaining some constant motion and controlled chaos. Washington’s saxophone squeaks and squeals over these long and extemporaneous compositions, bypassing the heart and speaking directly to your soul. To nitpick, I’m slightly less fond of some of ... read more

Eunuchs - Harbour Century
80

QUICK THOUGHTS

My most anticipated album of 2024 to this point, ‘Harbour Century’ from Australian avant-prog band Eunuchs has wildly lived up to my expectations.

It’s unhinged and psychotic in all the best, most gripping ways. The wild storytelling is entertaining and always seems to connect back to the crazed ‘Harbour Century’ theme: the unconventional poisoning of a monstrous leviathan, a deranged petting zoo, or an unsettling love story between man and ... read more

Can we appreciate her songwriting on BLACKBIIRD? Amazing lyrics, she really knows how to write

I really like Matt's review of this, as much as it's tongue in cheek. It's nice to hear a country album not built around cliches like drinking, trucks, or infidelity. All of these things bring a negative bias against country music that unfairly affects all artists under its umbrella, and that goes for myself as well, so it's always great to reminded of country music's roots.

That's exactly what ... read more

Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine

QUICK THOUGHTS

More aptly called "Soundtracks For The Astrology Girlies". There's just not a lot of character to go around on this, everything feels so perfectly groomed for the radio that there isn't actually anything interesting to take away.

'eternal sunshine' is a lot like the weather outside for me right now: sunny and no clouds in the sky, but still cold with no leaves on the trees; empty.

Enzo Garcia - (salt/copper)

Shoutout to AOTY user @engar, give '(salt/copper)' a listen and support AOTY artists!

This is a project a was skeptical of based off the first single "air", but I'm actually enjoying how emotional and well-produced this came out to be. This record feels like it's exploring depression from two different sonic landscapes, with the first half being mostly acoustic and the second half being much longer, droning electronics. It's the second half specifically where the album starts to ... read more

QUICK THOUGHTS

Gods greatest gift to music theory Jacob Collier has finally returned with his fourth and final installment to the Djesse series, 'Djesse Vol.4'. It's been a long time since I've listened to his music and I remember quite enjoying some of the songs off his first few albums, but I can't tell if my music taste has matured or this album is just straight up dookie, and I'm not talkin Green Day. This is some of the most overblown, synthetic, self-important music I've heard in a long ... read more

Mountainhead? Sounds like it would be a dreadful headache

ScHoolboy Q - BLUE LIPS
70

It's been a long time coming, but ScHoolboy Q’s return has been worth the wait.

‘BLUE LIPS’ is the first album from TDE rapper ScHoolboy Q since his underwhelming 2019 record ‘CrasH Talk’, an album which many would say was the first real blemish on Q’s discography. Since then, it’s pretty much been radio silence from Q, with only one non-album single releasing back in 2022.

Taking some time away seems to have been the best-case scenario for ScHoolboy, ... read more

Enzo Garcia - II. mirror
70

The second single for AOTY user @engar's album 'salt/copper' coming this Friday!

I really wasn't a big fan of the previous single unfortunately, but I'm really enjoying to acoustic sound of "II. mirror" a lot more. If anything, it's a little short without much time to develop, but I think the atmosphere of this is so much nicer than the previous. Looking forward to hearing the full release!

QUICK THOUGHTS

This is pretty jaw-dropping, for all of the wrong reasons. Surely I'm not the target demographic for this album, but regardless, there is no way I would ever choose to return to any of this ever again.

"@Juggernaut1914 I actually thought Yeat had a solid feature on Rendezvous, same with Travis on Rosary. Teezo was interesting just because it was different, but just felt out of place to me. That being said, the rest of the album feels so toneless and samey, just nothing all that compelling"

On yonn's review of By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
"I've not heard the Injury Reserve self-titled, but at least in comparison to Phoenix this is another leap in experimentation and abstractness. Such a hollow sound imo, but in the best, most bone-rattling way. Very interesting"
On TheOnlyOpinion's review of By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
"Nice review, "leaving the storm" is great. I almost feel like the ending in "GGG" is saying that the storm isn't something you can leave though, and more like a new relationship dynamic that needs to be tended to. The group is going to have to manage the storm rather than step out of it"

On Chorde's review of By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
"Love the opening line, that feels like such a perfect way of encapsulating the record. Your comparisons between BTTIGTP and this are perfect too. As much as this album feels like a scar, it's a scar that RiTchie feels like he's trying to move on from to continue working, but his hand keeps brushing up against it. Its a constant reminder that grief isnt something that will just go away"
