QUICK THOUGHTS
Fantano really stealing my thunder here, I've had The Chisel and 'What A Fucking Nightmare' on my to-do list for a while now. Anyway, this album does undoubtedly go "fucking" hard, I would love to see this in a live setting.
QUICK THOUGHTS
'Big Sigh', girl I get it honestly. A very sobering listen with some wonderful heartfelt lyricism. I'm a sucker for the indie folk, and I'll have to check out more from Hackman.
QUICK THOUGHTS
Oh noo, this is gonna be a new obsession for me isn’t it?
QUICK THOUGHTS
Wait, this is actually a whole new album? I just assumed this was a deluxe for ‘Insano’, why do we need this? At least this is a step closer to tolerable for me, but it’s still a bore.
Deep Dives: MGMT (#5)
MGMT’s newest record features their most emotionally compelling songwriting to date.
I’ve spent the last few days diving into the past discography of MGMT, through their pop era and into their more psychedelic and experimental works. With 2024’s ‘Loss Of Life’, however, the duo of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser takes another shift in sound, one that tugs far more on the emotional, introspective, and songwriting strings than I feel ... read more
Deep Dives: MGMT (#4)
After over a decade of waiting, MGMT finally returns with something we can twerk to.
Both ‘Congratulations’ and ‘MGMT’ are albums that heavily leaned into psychedelics, proving a bold choice turning away from the synthpop style that gained the group so much instant traction with 2007’s ‘Oracular Spectacular’. Now over a decade later, MGMT takes another crack at some catchy pop music without sacrificing any of their weird, ... read more
Deep Dives: MGMT (#3)
MGMT’s self-titled work is easily their most bland to date.
Three years after their second studio album ‘Congratulations’, an album which was a hard left turn for a group which had found so much commercial success via their debut, vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser continue to double down on psychedelia, this time with far weaker results.
On ‘MGMT’, any type of chorus, melody, or any memorable hooky ... read more
Deep Dives: MGMT (#2)
MGMT makes a strong statement against the grain with their second album.
There’s no doubt that MGMT burst onto the scene in 2007 with their debut album ‘Oracular Spectacular’ with their synthpop grooves, infectious melodies, and carefree attitude. All three lead singles for the debut, “Time to Pretend”, “Electric Feel”, and “Kids”, were all commercially successful, and the entire record was critically loved, with ... read more
Deep Dives: MGMT (#1)
Hi everyone, welcome to MGMT week!
With the upcoming release of MGMT’s newest album ‘Loss of Life’, I figured now would be as good of a time as any to go back through their discography. As my mild amount of anticipation grew for the upcoming record, I came to something of a ridiculous realization… “I have never listened to anything from MGMT, I don’t think I could name a single song from them.” You see, that’s what this ... read more
Quadratics is back in 2024 with another serious AOTY contender!
‘SCRAPYARD’ is coming of off the heels of 2022’s breakthrough ‘I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You’, an album that marked the completion of a stunning maturation for an artist that had been previously coined as not much more than a YouTube rapper. Quadeca’s sound had entirely shifted from the shallow pop rap he had built a YouTube following on into art pop, electronic, and experimental hip hop. His ... read more
As soon as that commercial came on I said “you know a new album would break the internet”, AND THEN SHE DID IT-
Against all the odds, this album actually exists.
We doin a live review on this oneβΌοΈ
1. Stars: Oh man I already can see what I'm getting myself into on this one... "Keep a few Jews on the staff now"? Like, good? Okay? It hurts so much to see the brand of one of my favorite and most influential artists in my music listening history devolve into this. I genuinely think Kanye thinks he's doing something here by supposedly turning a new leaf on this subject, like his reconciliation ... read more
Did she… miss?
That’s a hard thing for me to reconcile to be honest, considering UK rapper Little Simz is currently on one of the greatest three-album-runs in hip hop history, going back to 2019s ‘GREY Area’, 2021s ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’, and 2022s ‘NO THANK YOU’. With that stretch of albums (all 9/10’s in my opinion), Simz had firmly planted herself in my mind as one of the greatest rappers in the game, male or female, and ... read more
“Industry plant” … y’know, I don’t really care? Why should we really care as long as the music is good?
The Last Dinner Party may have a case for that label in all honesty (though always seems to be aimed towards women these days… hmmmm). The group signed with Island Records shortly before releasing their first single “Nothing Matters” in April of 2023, and the media attention and production value of their subsequent four singles leading up to ... read more
British band named The Smile, brush your teeth please π
The Smile is composed of Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, along with drummer Tom Skinner. Whether or not there is still a future for Radiohead as we know it, with their last album being released in 2016, it’s great to see Thom and Jonny still finding the passion to create new music, even if it be under a new name. The group released their debut record ‘A Light for Attracting Attention’ just under two ... read more
"Selected Jambient Works Vol. 1" is a new album from Peter Silberman, best known for his work with The Antlers. He, along with David Moore from Bing & Ruth, and Nicholas Principe from Port St. Willow, team up here under the name Cowboy Sadness. This is really serene instrumental ambient album with a bit of an americana touch, and I figured I'd give it a mention to anyone who might be interested.
Future’s legal name is Nayvadius Cash? Why doesn’t he just go by that, that name is hard as hell.
2015 finds us at a time where Atlanta rapper Future is at the peak of his craft: a platinum record and multiple albums charting in the top 10 on the Billboard charts under his belt, a back catalog of mixtapes and street singles that could rival anyone, and being one of the most in-demand feature artists on the planet, including Drake, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Rihanna, and Chief Keef, only ... read more
I’ve taken a lot of time at the beginning of this year to really focus on some of the things I want to do and music I want to listen to. As much enjoyment as I get from cultivating the perfect year-end list, the last two months where my time was almost entirely spent scrambling to listen and relisten to some of the biggest releases of 2023 was stressful. The result is always worth it, and I’m thankful to all of you who took the time to read through and comment on my 2023 Top 50, but ... read more
The third studio album from Atlanta rapper JID 'The Forever Story' sees him reach an echelon in hip hop that few have ever reached.
Yes, I don't think it'll be too far out of the question to call this one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, and certainly of the modern era. 'The Forever Story' combines intricate flows, witty and clever lyricism, thoughtful and introspective storytelling, a handful of great features and melodies, and a stunning vocal performance from JID all into one ... read more
