Marmaduke Duke - The Magnificent Duke
83

In Marmaduke Duke's debut record, they showcase a sound that's very different from the sound that gave them chart success in 2009 but that doesn't mean this record is any less impressive. The Scottish duo prove that they're a versatile pairing with elements of post-hardcore, alt-rock and even a little bit of shoegaze. It's definitely a fun and extremely varied listen

Empire State Bastard - Rivers Of Heresy
87

When the frontman of Biffy Clyro and the frontman of Oceansize first announced ESB, I knew it was gonna be an interesting album and we definitely got that.
Rivers of Heresy is extremely varied with explorations into basically every corner of extreme metal (aside from Black Metal). Simon Neil's s scream is as visceral and raw as it ever was and Mike Vennart's guitar work paired with Dave Lombardo's drum work is just brutal. All of this is tied together with fantastic production to bring an album ... read more

Victoria Monét - JAGUAR II
81

I'm not a big listener of contemporary R&B but if it's more of this, I must listen to more. The lyrical content isn't really to be looked into too much but the vocal performances from Monèt and her guest performers are amazing. The melodies are catchy, the rhythms are earworms in the making and the production is incredibly clean. This is a superb mix of R&B, neo soul and funk and the 35 minute runtime felt like nothing

The Armed - Perfect Saviors
79

This was a wild ride showing a fantastic range from the anonymous The Armed. Packed with noise rock, pop, indie and post-hardcore, Perfect Saviors was unpredictable from start to finish with great musicianship and great production

HotWax - A Thousand Times
72

FFO Sløtface, Goat Girl, Wet Leg & Royal Blood, Hotwax's debut EP is a strong showing of musicianship. Tight harmonies, great guitar work and overall fun songwriting. I'm excited to hear what comes next from this trio

Tigercub - The Perfume of Decay
87

In this album, Tigercub somehow manage to combine the sounds of every major alt-rock band from the 90s to present and offer it up in a way that is just so crisp and fun. The guitars are fuzzy, the vocals are versatile and dynamic. The mix is basically perfect. There really isn't much to dislike about this album. Fans of alt-rock bands like QOTSA, Royal Blood, Foo Fighters and Muse have to give this record a spin.

Holding Absence - The Noble Art of Self Destruction
71

Does something being a bit generic make it bad? I don't think so. This emo/post hardcore record does nothing to break any boundaries but it just does enough to make it a very decent, not stale record. Good instrumentation, catchy melodies. Overall, a good record for a 15 year old girl to cry to.

Jean Dawson - CHAOS NOW*
81

A really unique combination of indie and hip hop. Well produced, mental instrumentals, and good lyric work. This was a fun listen from an album that I highly recommend.

GEL - Only Constant
70

A short and sweet hardcore record with lo-fi hip-hop slap dab in the middle of the record. It definitely takes a lot of twists and turns in it's short runtime and was a fun listen. Definitely recommend

The St Pierre Snake Invasion - Galore
85

I was very surprised by this record. Expected it to be generic but it turned out to be a fantastic post-hardcore album that combined elements of noise rock, math rock and metalcore. Very well done.

Stuck - Freak Frequency
76

Interesting to hear these sounds from a US based band because this is definitely a sound that you hear from European bands more often. Still, this was an entertaining listen. Granted, Stuck haven't reinvented the art punk genre but this is still a great album. Fuzzy guitars, forward vocals and a general vibe of not giving a shit. It's a short but entertaining listen

Protomartyr - Formal Growth in the Desert
78

This is a superb post-punk album. Protomartyr know what they're doing and in this record, they show that really. Great lyricism paired with superb instrumentation and production. Well worth listening to.

Narrow Head - Moments of Clarity*
73

Shoegazer vocals meet grunge riffs in this 90s-inspired alt-rock record. You could critique it for its genericness in some areas but overall, they manage to duck under that label to provide a great listening experience and an album that any grunge fans should at least give a go

Favourite track:
Gearhead

Marmaduke Duke - Duke Pandemonium
84

Super unique, super fun.

Klein Zage - Feed the Dog
82

In Zage's debut album, she shows supreme skill in making delicate, slightly sombre-sounding dream pop. Very song feels intricately composed and takes the listener in a mysterious journey down a foggy road littered with ear candy. One of my favourite surprises of 2022 and one album that I stick on late a night with the lights dim

Pom Poko - Cheater
97

100 -> 97

One of my all-time favourite albums. Noisy as hell, and energetic as hell, Pom Poko is one of THE art-punk bands to watch now. If you like fuzzy, jazz-inspired punk music, you need to do yourself justice by listening to this album

Superbloom - Life's a Blur
70

A very solid album from a band very clearly influenced by the Grunge scene of 90s. Good instrumentation, decent production and some interesting instrumental interludes throughout the album. My only big critique is the vocals. They seem a little 2000s boyband for this genre. Like Kurt Cobain drunk 2 gallons of honey before doing a take. Not bad just not my preference. If you like 90s alt, this album is short enough to recommend checking out

Pitcher - The Sky Is On Fire
79

Pitcher's debut EP is a very strong and promising start for the Devon-based band. Strong instrumentation, strong vocals and very good production. Pitcher show a good amount of variety on this EP with the standout track being The Tide: a fantastic, stoner grunge track with a riff reminiscent of Nirvana. I'm interested to hear what this band can manage in future releases because what they have now is superb.

Andrew Lloyd Webber - Andrew Lloyd Webber: Variations
92

Imagine a baroque composer and a prog rock songwriter drove head-on into each other and you basically have this album. That is a pretty damn good combination

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
93

It's hard to rate an album like this. It's incredibly raw with voice cracks, bum notes and incredibly bare production but that is exactly what this album needed to be. Imagining this album with modern production, takes upon takes to choose from, intricate editing and thousands of dollars of studio gear would leave this album as a lifeless what-could-have-been but instead, we were gifted with an indie folk album that is better produced than almost any album from nowadays because they just ... read more

"@hypermusic73 I never said it's an issue, it's just very safe for them, and it's the only thing that makes the song not just incredibly generic. Unlike AHIYH, there's nothing else that makes this song stand out to the. AHIYH has some great harsher vocals, a catchy riff, and a cool build up. For me, this song hasn't got any of that."
