Sucker is loud, bratty pop with a few catchy moments, but it doesn’t really hold together. The punk-pop attitude gets repetitive fast, and too many tracks fall into generic, radio-ready structures that don’t leave much impact. The energy is there, but it feels inconsistent and a bit forced at times.
The Pinkprint is a mix of banger and boring songs. It has some of Nicki’s best songs, but the album is long and the album tracks are just meh. Overall, it’s a mixed project with a lot of filler, but strong highs.
3D Country is chaotic and inconsistent. The vocals are dreadful. The production isn’t really helping either. Some tracks have interesting moments, but they are ruined with a voice I genuinely can’t stand.
That’s Showbiz Baby leans into glossy, theatrical pop with a focus on fame, image, and the highs and lows of being in the spotlight. The production is sleek and dramatic, with big hooks and a consistent vibe, even if some tracks start to blur together.
DAMN. is tight and focused, with strong production and consistently sharp performances. Kendrick balances catchy, accessible tracks with heavier themes about identity, faith, and success, and it mostly lands. A few moments don’t hit as hard, but the album’s structure and replay value keep it engaging.
Exactly what you’d think white boy cloud rap would sound like. The autotune on these vocals are near unlistenable and don’t complement the production at all. There isn’t anything standout here and most of the record is only there to curate a specific vibe instead of embodying anything of substance. The actual production might have been fine on its own, but the mixing and vocals ruin anything positive this had to offer. And not that you can understand them, but there is nothing ... read more
I like the overall sound here. Billy Corgan’s vocals take some getting used to, but the guitars are easily the best part and sound great throughout. There weren’t really many standouts to me, but, even though I think it is a bit overrated, its an objectively good record.
Not bad, but profoundly uninteresting. I’m not a fan of this style in general and I didn’t think his take on it was particularly great. I think the lyrics were good and his voice is fine, but, to me, all the songs fall into the same vat of forgettability. Most interesting part of this record is the cover.
I felt, overall, this project had astounding potential at the beginning, with a strong concept and equally interesting music to back it up. However, my biggest issue with this is the latter half's runtime. It brings the whole project down and dampens what could have been a way more impactful conclusion. My individual stage reviews explain more of my thought process and opinions while listening to the album:
Stage 1: 86/100
A beautifully haunting album. The concept is so interesting and ... read more
More emptiness that way overstays its welcome. It got very frustrating by this point. While better than stage five most of the time, stage six feels like its beating its point across the listener's head who defiantly understands what's happening five hours in. The ideas of memory loss were already present in the first three stages and when the albums became almost tripled in length, it became belaboring. The latter half of this project fails to meet the basic mark of an engaging ... read more
Too long for my liking. I kind of saw this coming. This definitely is a smoother transition than three to four is, but stage five feels redundant. I didn't dislike it more than the others because of its rough elements because I think it is intentionally designed to be that way. It represents when memory has nearly dissipated. However, this point is beaten over the head in my opinion. To me, this stage is purely transitional to get from stage four to stage six, and a transition like that ... read more
A very sharp tonal shift for sure. I'll start off with giving the album its flowers. The album is really great at getting its point across and effective at making the listener feel empty. But, while this stage is great, I do have a few gripes with it. I felt this stage was a bit too long. The first three stages all have around a forty minute length and this doubles that when it really didn't need to. I also think I would have liked this to transition a little bit more smoothly from ... read more
If the second stage was defined by a sense of dread and realization of what’s to come, this stage is defined by the anxiety that the condition is causing. Confusion plagues the tracks, as sounds established in the first two stages are further distorted. The progression of the tracks from anxious and fearful to sad and eerie is very well done. While not quite as devastating as stage two in my opinion, this is a clear transition into the next stages.
This is better than the first stage in my opinion. I feel like this stage is where the symptoms of the disease really start to show themselves. It is much more grim than the first stage, which is dark for sure, but still lacking the dread of this stage. C3 was particularly interesting because it sounds just like A1, but it isn’t exactly right. It was like trying to remember a memory you once had, but it’s too fuzzy to make out details. After the stage of denial has finally worn off, ... read more
A beautifully haunting album. The concept is so interesting and moving, even though I haven’t had to go through dementia with someone I know and hopefully never will. While I wish I could listen to the full thing all the way through, as I feel it would be more impactful, I simply don’t have the time or attention span to listen to this for six and a half hours, even though it is very good. I’m really intrigued by the whole project and interested to see how it will progress.
Overall, pleasant sounding enough, but I have a few quarrels that hold this back from being great to me. My main problem with 1996 is that it is just a fancy coat of paint for an otherwise random collection of songs. While they all sound the same, Sakamoto strips away the meaning of the originals when they are paired together. A classical filter is used to hide the fact that these songs have nothing to do with each other. Instead of an album that tells a story or sticks to a theme, it feels ... read more
I don't know what I was expected, but I didn't think it would be bad. I haven't listened to the other two much, but Earl's previous work was pretty consistent so I'm not sure what went wrong here. The song length is too short and the production is uninspired. Everyone just sounded like they were bored making this.
