When I first listened to Long Season, it was the longest song I had ever heard. It is also a relatively short album. It is also perfect. I gave this album a 100/100 when I first heard it, and stand by it to this day.
Recorded in 1996, this record saw Fishmans truly push the boundaries for what could be done in the album format, and with dream pop especially. While very long songs was a thing well before the 90s, these tended to be in the rock or classical genre. And while Long Season is ... read more
REVIEW WEEK 8
Night Time - Killing Joke
This is going to be an odd one. Night Time, unlike a lot of the other albums I’ve reviewed so far, has practically no long-standing attachment in my mind. I only listened to this album for the first time very recently, and it just makes the cut score-wise for me to review it. So don’t expect cutting analysis or lengthy side tangents here, this will be a pretty straightforward log of my general thoughts on each of these songs after a ... read more
REVIEW WEEK 7
Frances the Mute - The Mars Volta
I first listened to this album on its 20th anniversary a few weeks ago, and after doing a deep dive into it my appreciation for it has only grown. This album’s insane lyricism pairs perfectly with its experimental, all-over-the-place prog rock instrumentation. With its long songs often coming in multiple movements, this album is an experience from front to end.
Before going track by track, I would like to talk briefly about the story. It ... read more
REVIEW WEEK 6
Hounds of Love - Kate Bush
Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love represents a critical and commercial peak of art pop. The critical acclaim this album receives is ot hard to understand. While the absolutely gorgeous singing on here stands out, the complex rhythm, varied instrumentation, and general experimentation with sounds on this album makes this album really exemplify the “art” part of art pop. However, it is this album’s simultaneous commercial success that ... read more
REVIEW WEEK 5
Hozier - Hozier
Hozier is an artist that I have an interesting relationship with. I was first introduced to him, as I’m sure everyone in the western world with ears who didn’t live under a rock was, by the inescapable Take Me To Church. As of the writing of this review, this song is the 23rd most streamed song on Spotify ever with close to 3 billion streams. The odd thing about it though, is it doesn’t feel “basic” or “too mainstream”. ... read more
