Very much hope this is not a detour and they keep making more music like this, it is very good
Will Toledo doing this in part to make it library safe is so funny I can’t hate, no matter how good or bad it is
Trojan horse is going to be so much better than experimental rap I’m calling it now
If rage music continues the way it seems to be going right now, this album could end up being ahead of its time. Anyway it’s great, INSANE distortion and vocal frying throughout, the production is off the wall in the best way with harsh stabbing synths and raging distorted guitars, and the vocal processing matches it perfectly. Some songs almost lose themselves in the distortion at points, but I actually really like that. I think this is the kind of thing 2slimey thinks he’s doing, ... read more
I really like the way this album blends Jerskin’s strange electronic style from his previous album with his classical work as a score composer. This album has a lot of personality in it, feeling very personal to him and his experience, particularly with the death of his friend and then father. It’s a beautiful love letter to his home and childhood, with a menacing undercurrent of sadness. I love the final stretch of exclusively piano ballads, as it feels almost like a medley, and ... read more
This is a really really special album in my opinion, that I think is being underrated. RiTchie’s rapping and singing on this is incredible. While on the last album his vocals were processed beyond recognition to show his pain and grief, often here they are raw, weathered and yet accomplish the same. His voice is most central on Zig Zag, where the beat almost drops out in places. His lyricism is also sharp but simple on lots of these tracks, conveying his thoughts and fears in a compelling ... read more
Hold on, did 2Slimey just end a song with a gorgeous violin and piano section, that was weird for him.
This song is great, these guys are great, their musics great and they’re cool people. You guys are wrong.
Finally some great, full on metal. Metal has long been a genre I really couldn’t get along with. I normally hate the vocals, as I think they often sound stupid or way too over the top. Also metal lyrics normally suck imo. They’re just way too edgy and pretty crap. I’m definitely generalising, but who cares. Also I tend to find the instruments themselves sound pretty flat in my limited experience with metal. It’s just always been something I couldn’t get along with, ... read more
I don’t care what anyone says, this is a Christmas album. It’s also perfect. My favourite parts are the small touches that elevate these songs to cosmic levels of brilliance, the sudden rise in Sufjan’s voice on John Wayne Gacy Jr, the heavenly string sections throughout the whole thing, the electric guitar on come on feel the illanoise, the drums on they are night zombies, and pretty much everything in the predatory wasp. This thing is beautiful start to finish. The intro and ... read more
Is this the best Christmas song ever made? Absolutely if you’re an insufferable contrarian.
The first three tracks completely destroyed me. I was so drained of emotion I found it impossible to cry until Brooklyn dodgers. Anyway this thing doesn’t put a foot wrong. It’s incredible. I thought I got it before but I know I get it now. Some of the lyrics hit me like a bus, it was one of the most emotionally intense listening experiences I’ve ever had. The one-two punch of fast car and Ian Curtis wishlist at the end is brutal. The calmer tracks in the middle are also a ... read more
It’s a shame. Going into this I had pretty low expectations, I hadn’t loved any of his recent release, the pre-release ep was pretty mid. So I was pleasantly surprised I really really enjoyed this on first listen. The problem was I just didn’t go back. I don’t care, I’ve listened to it maybe once since then, and that was like a week after release. It just got swallowed up and dwarfed in a year of great releases. I’ll probably come back to it at some point and ... read more
