This is the first time I have listened to anything by Poppy and my expectations were not very high. However Empty Hands did end up supprising me a bit, even if I was not fully sold by the end of the album. This album is so peak. Moody, atmospheric and engaging throughout its relatively short runtime. I wish it was a bit longer as a lot of the songs are too short for my taste, but thats only a minor nitpick and the quality of the music on this album is incredible.

I'm all for bands trying out new styles of music but this just feels really generic to me. Its a shame because I really enjoy their back catalogue, but this is such a step down. Its decent enough and gets a bit more intresting in the second half, but I really dislike the vocals in certain places. This band has so much potential but I don't think this gets anywhere close to what they are capable of.
For my first full length release of 2026 I decided to give this album a listen and I was pleasantly supprised. While nothing on here feels particularly unique, I really enjoyed listening to it. I find myself enjoying black metal more when it incoperates more melodic elements into the music, and I thought this album struck a good balance between them and the sheer brutality expected from albums of it's genre.
