Willy Rodriguez - wetdream

Redoing this review cos this is so much more than the furry porn album. This genuinely might be perfect. Its able to effortlessly swap between being quite elegant and pretty to being loud and messy, all with this super cool lofi production. The instrumental tracks feel less like interludes and more like beautiful tracks that stand out amongst the more fully formed vocal songs, *untitled* especially being one of the best songs on the album despite being just a minute long. The melodies on every ... read more

McKinley Dixon - Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?
95

This was the album that introduces me to the greatest artist of all time, who's musical genius knows no bounds, lyricism can bring the hardest, sharpest hearts to tears, and skill can rival the gods (no glaze). Its less than half an hour yet so packed with perfect songs. Sun, I Rise is such an awesome first song that immediately grips you. Run, Run, Run is an absolute banger, and on par with its sequel. Live! from the Kitchen Table is probably the best jazz rap song ever in my opinion; ... read more

CAPSULE - L. D. K. Lounge Designers Killer

Pure joy and whimsy in noise form. Tracks 1, 2 and 7 were by far the best songs, but everything else was still enjoyable by virtue of being made up of fun sounds, even if at times it sounds like upbeat elevator music.

Geordie Greep - The New Sound
85

Last night I had a dream that I saw Geordie Greep live. He was performing in this coastal town holiday destination, atop a pirate ship that sailed him around the seafront and eventually off into the open ocean once he had finished. He performed nothing from this album, but began his set with Black Midi songs which I haven't heard before and most likely aren't real (I remember a rather catchy one about a milkmaid), before going into various cover songs. He sung Uncanny Long Arms by ... read more

Porcelain Stars - Rosemary

A really pleasant album to top off January. The instrumentals were all delightful, super chill. The vocals were a little inconsistent though, which does hurt it a little but they do get buried beneath the gorgeous instrumentals making them easy enough to ignore.

By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
95

This was probably the most excited I've ever been for an album. Coming into this I was very confident that the By Storm debut could be one of the greatest albums of all time. Now obviously it isn't, but this is still a masterpiece in its own right. This is one of the most beautiful, most baffling, saddest, most interesting albums to ever release. Ritchie's melancholic rapping bleeds emotion into every song, and his writing probably his best yet. You can feel how driven this album ... read more

The Dismemberment Plan - Change
85

Emergency & I is one of my all-time favourite indie rock records so I was excited to see what the D-Plan followed up with. Change is a pretty good album. It feels more standardly rock-y than E&I, losing some of the charm, but keeps the fantastic song writing and instrumentation. I also just really love Travis Morrison's vocals - they're so satisfying to listen to and this was probably the better vocal performance out of the two D-Plan albums I've listened to.

McKinley Dixon - The Importance of Self Belief
85

Realised this was gonna be my 500th album so I thought I'd make it special by completing the discography of my glorious king McKinley Dixon. And yeah its probably his worst album - his vocals can be a bit too quiet, and the instrumentals, which being some of his best, kinda stretch on too long - however this is McKinley Dixon we're talking about, its still some of the best jazz rap out there. His rapping is incredible and comes with some great messages behind them, and the beats are ... read more

dälek - From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots

A great industrial hiphop album. Some really unique and spooky beats, with some great rapping that lowk reminded me of ELUCID at times. I wanna give an honourable mention the second to last track - a truly amazing song that I can see growing to one of my favourite experimental hiphop tracks. I also want to give a dishonourable mention to Black Smoke Rises. I never skip tracks whenever I listen to albums so that I can get the full experience, even if it means listening to a few mid tracks. I ... read more

samlrc - A Lonely Sinner

Crazy that this samples a cover of Hyperballad, but it is a shame she didn't sample the best cover of Hyperballad...

Anyway, its a really solid post-rock album. Lowk has the opposite issue to Lift Your Skinny Fists where my favourite parts of this were the ambient bits - they were all extremely serene and uplifting. That's not to bring down the post-rock parts, though, they were as epic and climactic as you'd hope. Awesome album, just needed that sample.

ribbon fix - camp fire dares the sun
85

This is a really great album. I haven't listened to any midwest emo before so I really didn't have many expectations, but I was still surprised at how beautiful this album feels. The instrumentals are all fantastic, but the standout for me were the two vocalists. They play off of each other perfectly, with the woman having a great voice that fits perfectly with the beautiful instrumentals, and the man having what I'd expect is a more traditionally emo voice (but not in the ... read more

Gingerbee - Our Skies Smile

"According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyways. Because bees don't care what humans think is impossible." - gingerbee 2023

Apiary is probably the best EP of all time in my opinion so I came into this with some expectations, and I would say they were met. Obviously its not Apiary levels, but its still a super unique little experience ... read more

Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez See Your Future
85

I've been tryna write a review for every album I've listened to recently but it gets difficult when you get an album like this. It's just an all-round fantastic listen. Denzel's a great rapper, all the writing is incredible, the productions super nice and the whole album just feels great to listen to. There really isn't much else to say.

Ween - The Mollusk
75

I've spent most of my life assuming Ween was gonna be another Blink 182, Slipknot, Linkin Park type of band - some American dad-rock that I'm just not interested in. Uhhhhh yeah they're not really that tbh.

This was actually just a super pleasant, entertaining listen. Its very fun and comical, and embraces whimsy to the fullest. I don't really see myself returning to most of these songs outside of the album as they're not really something I'm interested in - still ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt - SICK!
75

It's an Earl album so you know what you're getting. The production obviously fantastic, and hes a great rapper. The Armand Hammer and Zelooperz features are both really great, defo the highlight of this album. However, most of these songs really need to be longer - most songs being under two minutes really hurts how substantial this album feels, and makes a lot of the track list feel quite forgettable.

Racing Mount Pleasant - Grip Your Fist, I'm Heaven Bound
95

Genuinely a phenomenal album - probably my favourite from Racing Mount Pleasant, and perchance the best album about fists and heaven. It feels so warm and personal, like you were in the room as these songs were being played. Every instrumental is perfectly beautiful, and the climax of every song feels climatic and grand, whilst not losing the dainty beauty that each song began with. Also the ending song, Do You Think I'm Pretty, is absolutely incredible - such a gorgeous ending to the ... read more

underscores - skin purifying treatment

It's an alright EP I guess. The productions nice and songwritings decent but there's not much substance beyond that. When civilisation falls this will be yet another inconsequential relic forgotten to time.

Injury Reserve - By the Time I Get to Phoenix
100

By The Time I Get To Phoenix - what an album. Its one of the saddest, darkest, more creative, most unique, most beautiful, weirdest albums to ever exist, and one I've been listening to on repeat for almost a year now. The standout feature is Corey's phenomenal production - he creates such eerie soundscapes on every song that are unlike anything I've ever heard and then he goes and samples BCNR and uses it to create on of the most unique beats I've heard on Superman That. ... read more

Jane Remover - Frailty
85

jane remover i hardly know her oh my god this reviewing shit is easy suck on it fantano. anyway a super unique and enjoyable album - more poppy and fun that revengeseekerz, whilst also being more interesting songwriting-wise imo. the production is naturally fantastic and all the songs are pretty catchy. gives some wallsocket vibes at times which is good cos boy do I love wallsocket

black midi - Hellfire
85

Jeepers, Greepers, wasn't that great! Its a chaotic, theatrical epic of an album - the instrumentals are all crazy and intense, the vocals are as unique as you'd expect from Greep, and it lowk gives Hazbin Hotel vibes but not in a bad way.
