MJ Lenderman - MJ Lenderman
100

This is just flat out phenomenal. There’s something that this album has that a lot of albums don’t have to me and it’s this strange familiarity and nostalgia that this album exudes, and also its major vulnerability and raw production style. Some of the most powerful and raw moments I’ve ever heard on any album appear on this record and it never fails to get me every time. This record has grown to be one of my favorites ever, and it always keeps me coming back with more ... read more

Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us
97

Yes. Just yes. Exactly what I needed from them such a fresh spin on their already amazing sound that has been so uniquely theirs for 15 years. Loved the hell out of this record

Jane Remover - Census Designated
93

Such a fantastic shoegaze record definitely one of my favorites of the year such a loud, and just flat-out euphoric listening experience from front to back.

Sprain - The Lamb as Effigy
99

I'm absolutely speechless. Easily one of the heaviest and most transcendental listening experiences. The whole album is unrelenting for the full 90+ minute runtime whether that be its absolutely manic vocals that Alex brings to the table, the insanely heavy guitar tones, to the unbelievable tension-building and transcendental drones.
I loved every track but I need to talk about my favorite the 24-minute long post-rock epic “Margin For Error” which also blends neoclassical, and ... read more

The Microphones - Mount Eerie
97

This album is just as good as The Glow pt. 2 and it’s even weirder than its predecessor! I do prefer this over the glow a little more from a listening experience standpoint, some of these songs absolutely send me into another plane of existence some of the analog tricks he uses on this album are truly a feat along with the panning and stereo imaging are top tier as well like in the opening track I. The Sun. The songwriting and storytelling from this record as well is so detailed and so ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt & The Alchemist - Voir Dire
93

Earl’s best since some rap songs. The raps are top tier and Al’s production ties it all together loved this album from start to finish!

Swans - The Beggar
95

Took me months to finish but I finally decided to sit down with this record and finally give it a full listen that it deserves and wow was it a rewarding one. It’s 2hr runtime I gotta say is one of the most difficult listens in terms of the pacing of swans albums but it also is one of the most rewarding and thought provoking from the perspective of Michael Gira and his grasping of feelings of his own mortality and death. While it gives a it a really dark feel, some of these songs are the ... read more

Travis Scott - UTOPIA
85

Travis Scott’s Utopia is an incredible collection of dark trap bangers, dark house, and the psychedelic trap sound he’s helped pioneer over what’s been nearly a decade now. I wasn’t sure how this album would go over and how he would go about this sonically but I’m glad to say he went in the right direction and kept me on my toes nearly the whole 1h 15m runtime. Aside from a few duds this album was pretty consistent throughout and so satisfyingly exceeded my ... read more

Agriculture - Agriculture
87

This is an incredible debut. No doubt one of my favorites from this year absolutely unhinged and fast paced and never overstays it’s welcome. Enjoyed the absolute hell out of this record!

Boris - flood
100

Boris is one of the most interesting bands out there. This record stands alone as my main reason for that statement. This band has basically covered nearly every base when it comes to sounds, they've done Drone, Metal, Hard Rock, Shoegaze, Ambient, even Pop, and also from this album, Post-Rock. While I don't think that every album they release is amazing. I do commend them for being probably one of the most prolific bands of all time, if they're not recording an album, they're back on the road ... read more

The Lemon Twigs - Everything Harmony
88

This is probably going to be my most listened to album from this year when its all said and done. Another case of Revivalism done so tastefully and is executed so meticulously it could genuinely pass as a cheesy soft rock album from the 70s. But for that, I LOVE IT. Some of these songs should not go as hard as they do but they really are some of the best songs I’ve heard all year I haven’t been able to put this thing down for extended periods of time since it came out! Love this ... read more

Ryan Beatty - Calico
80

I was genuinely blown away the first listen of this album. While I don't feel the exact same way about it past that, I still enjoy the hell out of it to this day since it was released. The production by Ethan Gruska puts that modern singer-songwriter sound he helped create with Phoebe Bridgers’ last two records. And also the songwriting is so poetic while also maintaining choruses like on the track “Bruises Off The Peach”. And on top of that Ryan’s voice matches ... read more

Kali Malone - Does Spring Hide Its Joy
72

As much as I have absolutely LOVED Kali’s last few releases those being Sacrificial Code and Living Torch, AND on top of that having Stephen O’Malley of sunn O))) in the mix along with Lucy Railton, I had no reason to think I wouldn’t like this one. While that is the case, I did like it, I can’t say it blew me away the same way those other two did.
I’ve struggled to come up with a review for this album and have put it off essentially since it came out and I ... read more

Lael Neale - Star Eaters Delight
73

Had no idea what to expect going into this record and I enjoyed it for the most part. There are parts that are absolutely incredible but then there are some duds within the songs that caused me to lose interest. But in this case the good outweighs the bad and overall liked it. Solid release from Lael Neale!

Thantifaxath - Hive Mind Narcosis
80

I have been attempting to get into the genre of Black Metal this year which is an intimidating task to say the least. Not knowing where to start, what’s the best, so many people have so many different opinions on the matter, not to even mention the controversies that come with it and have basically become synonymous with the genre. But after all that this record is incredible. The blending of black metal and avant-garde metal is damn near seamless and each track is just so in your face ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
100

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this record. Possibly one of if not THE greatest musical achievement in rap music and could say the same for music at large. My mind is blown every time I put this back on with every listen I discover at least one thing I didn't notice before the last time I listened. I see Kendrick as the best of a generation and is always floating in my top 2 of my personal list of greatest rappers to ever do it. The man gained legend status with this record.

Jack Harlow - Jackman.
59

I think this was definitely a step in the right direction for Jack but it still isn’t GREAT. But I think anything would’ve topped his past effort. Overall some bright moments and I think he can improve on this release as well so only time will tell if he will or not.

Maruja - Knocknarea
95

I’m just going to start off by saying this, this is definitely one of the best debuts of any band that I have heard in a long time. Some incredibly fast paced and HEAVY tracks, while also containing the dynamics of the Post-Rock giants. Short, concise, only 4 tracks and is also produced flawlessly and the guitar and bass tones are unreal! Seriously looking forward to what they will come forth with next. Seriously a must listen for anyone this year that wants to find that next up and ... read more

Geese - 3D Country
90

MAN is this album KILLER. Such a fun release by a young up and coming band that embraces older musical tropes while staying original and adding their own unique unhinged twist to it.

From the first track 2122 that sounds like something straight out of Led Zeppelin II, to the title track that adopts proto punk sounds that were popular among The Modern Lovers, Television, and others, to crusades that sounds like Rolling Stones in their prime, this album nearly has it all in terms of revivalism ... read more
